Triplophysa nayongensis is a blind stygobitic loach described in 2026 from a single pond inside Dadong cave, in Nayong County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, southwestern China, in the upper drainage of the Wujiang River. Its description brought the count of known cave-dwelling plateau-loach species to 43, part of a wave of Triplophysa cave discoveries across Guizhou's karst uplands in 2026. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, and shows the eye reduction, colourless body and other troglomorphic traits typical of the genus's most cave-adapted lineages. It has never entered the aquarium trade, and what is known about it comes almost entirely from the original description.

Taxonomy & naming

Triplophysa nayongensis was described in 2026 by Dong, Ju and An — the lead authors within a fifteen-author team, with Xianghong Dong and Tao Ju credited as equal first contributors and Miao An as corresponding author — in the Journal of Fish Biology, from voucher specimens collected in an underground cave in Zhangjiawan Town, Nayong County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, China. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, within Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, and the genus behind the great majority of China's documented cave-fish diversity.

The authors describe the discovery as elevating the number of known cave-dwelling plateau-loach species from 42 to 43, and as extending the genus's documented range further into the upper drainage of the Wujiang River, a primary tributary of the Yangtze. The type series — a holotype (GZU 20250118002) and four paratypes — is held at Guizhou University. Catalog of Fishes notes the species is also discussed in the same year's Zhu et al. (2026) ZooKeys paper describing T. dafangensis and T. zhijinensis, part of the same concentrated burst of Guizhou cave-Triplophysa taxonomy in 2026.

Morphology

The original description diagnoses Triplophysa nayongensis on a combination of characters distinguishing it from its cave-restricted congeners: eyes either reduced to discernible black dots or entirely absent, and a colourless body — the classic troglomorphic pairing of blindness and depigmentation. The anterior nasal flaps are not elongated into barbel-like processes, unlike some other cave Triplophysa.

Further diagnostic characters given in the description: the dorsal-fin origin sits anterior to the pelvic-fin insertions; the pectoral-fin tips fail to reach the pelvic-fin origins; the hindmost parts of the pelvic fins extend beyond the anus but do not reach the anal-fin insertion; and the distal margin of the dorsal fin is truncate. No absolute standard- or total-length measurement is reported in the sources available for this article, so a maximum size in centimetres cannot honestly be given yet.

Habitat

Triplophysa nayongensis is known only from a small pond inside Dadong cave, near Erdaohe Village, Zhangjiawan Town, Nayong County, Bijie City, Guizhou Province, southwestern China. The cave entrance sits at roughly 26°39′00″N, 105°23′33″E, at an elevation of about 5643 ft — the highest recorded locality of the four Guizhou cave Triplophysa described in this batch. Catalog of Fishes places the site in the upper drainage of the Wujiang River, part of the Yangtze basin.

As a described stygobite (an obligate groundwater-dwelling species), it lives permanently in dark, still or slow-moving cave water rather than daylight surface streams. No specific temperature, pH or flow measurements have been published for the site; karst cave waters in this part of Guizhou tend to run cool and thermally stable year-round, but this has not been instrumented for this species specifically.

Feeding

No feeding or diet data have been published for Triplophysa nayongensis. Cave-dwelling Triplophysa are generally presumed to feed opportunistically on small invertebrates and organic material washed into cave systems from the surface, locating food with barbels and the lateral line rather than sight — a reasonable inference from the genus, not an observation of this species.

There is no aquarium-trade or husbandry feeding record to draw on either, since the species has never been kept.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded for this species, in the wild or otherwise. Cave-restricted fish in nutrient-poor, energy-limited subterranean systems are generally understood to reproduce less frequently and at lower fecundity than their surface relatives, but this is a broad pattern seen across troglobitic fishes as a group, not a documented trait of T. nayongensis specifically.

Breeding

Breeding is undocumented for this species. Nemacheilid loaches as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and T. nayongensis is presumed to follow that pattern based on its family — but no spawning event has actually been observed.

In the aquarium

Triplophysa nayongensis is not in the aquarium trade and has never been kept in captivity. As a blind cave endemic known from a single pond inside one cave, it should stay in the wild rather than be collected for the hobby — its entire known population occupies one small, easily disturbed habitat.

Were care ever attempted, cool, clean, well-oxygenated water, low light and a bare or coarse substrate mimicking groundwater conditions would be the starting point drawn from the wider genus, along with the usual caution around copper and full-strength medications on near-scaleless loach skin. None of this is documented husbandry for this species — it is inference from Nemacheilidae generally.

Conservation

Triplophysa nayongensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as a species named in 2026 from a single cave pond, it has simply not yet been assessed, and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Single-cave-system Triplophysa are, as a group, inherently vulnerable — groundwater pollution, quarrying, tourism development of cave systems and shifts in local hydrology can affect an entire species' known range at once, and this species' habitat is a single named pond within one cave.

No population trend or threat assessment specific to this species has been published, and there is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this fish.
