Taxonomy & naming
Triplophysa xingyiensis was described in 2026 by Yuan, Zhu and Zhang in the journal Zoosystematics and Evolution, from specimens collected at two subterranean river outlets in the Nanpanjiang River Basin, Guizhou Province, southwestern China. It sits in the genus Triplophysa, within Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, and the genus responsible for the great majority of China's documented cave and subterranean fish diversity.
The type series — a holotype (CNGZNU 202507016) and eight paratypes — is held at Guizhou Normal University. Phylogenetic analysis based on 13 protein-coding mitochondrial genes recovered the new species as a well-supported monophyletic lineage, and cytochrome b genetic-distance analysis placed it closest to T. anlongensis, T. rongduensis and T. zhenfengensis, with pairwise distances of 1.8–2.4% — close enough to be clearly related, distinct enough to be recognized as a separate species.
Morphology
The original description diagnoses Triplophysa xingyiensis by a naked, scaleless body combined with eyes of normal size — 9.1–17.3% of head length — a marked contrast with the reduced or vestigial eyes typical of deep-cave Triplophysa. The lateral line is complete, and the posterior chamber of the air bladder is degenerated, a feature shared with several other hypogean congeners.
Other diagnostic characters given in the description: the outer rostral barbel is the longest of the barbels, at 34.3–48.0% of head length; the caudal fin is emarginate (shallowly forked) with 16 branched rays; and the vertebral count is 4 + 36. No absolute standard- or total-length measurement is reported in the sources available for this article, so a maximum size in centimetres cannot honestly be given yet.
Habitat
Triplophysa xingyiensis is known from two subterranean river outlets near Zhengtun Town, Xingyi City, Guizhou Province, at roughly 25.0488°N, 105.0222°E and an elevation of about 4072 ft. Catalog of Fishes places the site in the karst subterranean rivers of the Nanpanjiang River basin — part of the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) drainage, distinct from the Yangtze-basin systems that hold most of the other newly described Guizhou cave loaches.
Because it was collected at river outlets rather than deep within a closed cave, it likely experiences more light and surface influence than the strictly hypogean members of its genus — plausibly the reason it has retained functional eyes where close relatives have not. No specific temperature, pH or flow measurements have been published for the site.
Feeding
No feeding or diet data have been published for Triplophysa xingyiensis. With eyes intact and a habitat closer to the surface than fully hypogean congeners, it may forage more visually than blind cave Triplophysa, but this is inference from its morphology and habitat rather than an observed feeding record.
There is no aquarium-trade or husbandry feeding data to draw on either, since the species has never been kept.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded for this species, in the wild or otherwise. Subterranean-river Nemacheilidae as a group are poorly studied for reproductive behaviour, and nothing published here fills that gap for T. xingyiensis specifically.
Breeding
Breeding is undocumented for this species. Nemacheilid loaches as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and T. xingyiensis is presumed to follow that pattern based on its family — but no spawning event has actually been observed.
In the aquarium
Triplophysa xingyiensis is not in the aquarium trade and has never been kept in captivity. As a narrow-range endemic known from only two subterranean outlets, it should stay in the wild rather than be collected for the hobby.
Were care ever attempted, cool, clean, well-oxygenated flowing water and a coarse substrate would be the starting point drawn from the wider genus, along with the usual caution around copper and full-strength medications on near-scaleless loach skin. None of this is documented husbandry for this species — it is inference from Nemacheilidae generally.
Conservation
Triplophysa xingyiensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as a species named in 2026 from just two known localities, it has simply not yet been assessed, and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Narrow-range karst and subterranean-river Triplophysa are, as a group, inherently vulnerable — groundwater pollution, quarrying, hydrological modification and cave or river-outlet tourism development can affect an entire species' known range at once.
No population trend or threat assessment specific to this species has been published, and there is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this fish.
