Taxonomy & naming
Turcinoemacheilus ilamensis was formally described in 2026 by Limbu, Rajbanshi, Limbu and Gurung, published in the Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity. The type locality is the Mai Khola, in Ilam district, Koshi Province, eastern Nepal, within the upper Ganges River basin.
It sits in the genus Turcinoemacheilus, a small group of stone loaches erected for species from Iran, Iraq and Turkey that were previously folded into the broader, now largely dismantled genus Nemacheilus. Before this description, the genus's only confirmed presence in the Himalayan foothills was Turcinoemacheilus himalaya, described in 2011 from the Koshi and Gandaki river basins of Nepal — a wide geographic gap from the genus's Middle Eastern members that likely reflects an older, more continuous range fragmented by geological history. T. ilamensis extends that same eastern-Nepal foothold. Morphology

Habitat
