Taxonomy & naming
Boulenger described the species in 1892 from the Sittang River in the Tenasserim provinces of Myanmar. The name honours Edward Blyth, curator of the Asiatic Society of Bengal's museum in Calcutta. Toxotes belongs to Toxotidae, the archerfishes.
Morphology
FishBase gives no maximum length for the species, and the atlas records none. Like other archerfishes it is a deep-bodied, flat-backed fish with an upturned mouth set for striking prey above the surface.
Habitat
Myanmar. FishBase describes a freshwater, pelagic, amphidromous fish of the tropics, meaning it moves between fresh and salt water during its life.
Feeding
Diet is not documented for this species. Archerfishes in general hit insects and other small animals on overhanging vegetation with a jet of water from the mouth.
Mating
Courtship has not been described for this species.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for this species.
In the aquarium
Sold by two of the partner stores. Archerfishes do best in a wide tank with a gap between the water surface and the lid, so that they can shoot at food. FishBase gives no temperature, pH or hardness range for the species, and the atlas records none.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List classes Toxotes blythii as Data Deficient, assessed in March 2011, meaning there is too little information to judge its risk of extinction.
