Taxonomy & naming
Hypomasticus torrenticola was formally described in 2016 by José Birindelli, Priscila Teixeira and Heraldo Britski, as one of two new Leporinus species erected from Xingu basin material in the same paper. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family whose members are recognisable by their oblique, head-down grazing posture and, in many genera including Leporinus, a striped or blotched juvenile pattern. The genus Leporinus itself is large and taxonomically active; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference point for which combinations currently stand.
The species epithet torrenticola combines the Latin torrens ("torrent", a rushing stream) with -cola ("dweller"), a direct description of the fast, rapids habitat in which the type series was collected. As a recently described, narrow-range species, H. torrenticola has no significant history of name changes or synonymy to date, and it is not established in the aquarium trade under any other name — most secondary sources still describe it strictly by its scientific name.
This fish was long listed as Leporinus torrenticola; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Hypomasticus, and the current combination Hypomasticus torrenticola is followed here.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum length of 5.5 in total length for Hypomasticus torrenticola, a modest size for the genus, many members of which grow considerably larger. Like other Leporinus it has the family's characteristic elongated, moderately compressed body and a small, underslung to terminal mouth adapted for grazing rather than for taking large prey items, along with the oblique swimming posture — head tilted down toward the substrate — that gives headstanders their common name.
Detailed morphological description beyond the original 2016 species account is sparse in the sources available; the original description (Birindelli, Teixeira & Britski, 2016, in a paper on two new Leporinus species from the Xingu) is the primary reference for diagnostic characters separating it from its close congeners, but that source was not accessible for this article. Colour pattern and fin details are not confirmed here rather than guessed.
Habitat
Hypomasticus torrenticola is endemic to the middle rio Xingu drainage in Pará state, Brazil, known from the main river and its tributaries the rio Iriri and rio Curuá. FishBase and iNaturalist occurrence records both place it specifically in moderate-to-fast-flowing rapids — a benthopelagic species associated with the churning, oxygen-rich water and rocky substrate of Xingu rapids rather than the slower floodplain and backwater habitats used by many other Leporinus.
This is a demanding and specific habitat: rapids on the Xingu support a distinctive rheophilic (current-loving) fish fauna found almost nowhere else, and several species tied to this exact habitat, including this one, are considered vulnerable to any change in flow regime. Feeding
FishBase describes Hypomasticus torrenticola as omnivorous, feeding mainly on aquatic insects, filamentous algae and Podostemaceae — a family of unusual aquatic flowering plants that grow attached to rock in fast-flowing water, much like the Xingu's other rheophilic specialists depend on them. This diet fits the classic headstander pattern: an oblique, head-down grazer working algae and biofilm off hard substrate while also picking up small invertebrates in passing.
In an aquarium setting this profile points toward a vegetable-forward diet — algae wafers, blanched vegetables and spirulina-based foods — supplemented with some protein such as small live or frozen invertebrates, though no aquarium feeding accounts specific to this species were found in the sources used here.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour specific to Hypomasticus torrenticola was found in the sources available for this article. Headstanders in general are egg-scatterers with no pair-bonding behaviour documented beyond the act of spawning itself, and there is no reason from the available material to expect this species to differ, but that is an inference from the genus rather than a documented observation of H. torrenticola itself.
Breeding
As with other headstanders, Hypomasticus torrenticola is presumed to be an egg-scattering species with no parental care, following the pattern documented for its genus generally. It has not been reported as bred in the aquarium hobby, which is unsurprising given that it is a recently described, narrow-range, rapids-specialist species with essentially no presence in the trade. Data on fecundity, egg characteristics or spawning triggers specific to this species are absent from the sources consulted, and none should be assumed.
In the aquarium
Hypomasticus torrenticola is not an established aquarium species — there is no evidence in the sources used for this article that it is collected or traded, and its known range is a single, remote stretch of the Xingu and two tributaries. Its habitat requirements are also demanding: as a rapids specialist it would need strong, well-oxygenated current and a rocky, algae-covered substrate to approximate its wild conditions, closer to the setup needed for other Xingu rheophilic fish than to a typical community tank.
Given its modest maximum size of 5.5 in, a hypothetical keeper would still need to bear in mind the fin-nipping and territorial tendencies documented across Leporinus generally, and provide the strong flow and grazing surfaces (algae-covered rock and driftwood) that its wild diet implies. Because it is not currently in the trade, this section is necessarily speculative and should be read as such.
Conservation
Hypomasticus torrenticola is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient. Both FishBase and the IUCN assessment flag the same specific concern: the species' entire known range in the middle Xingu and its rapids tributaries lies within reach of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam complex, one of the largest and most contentious dam projects in the Amazon, which has already altered flow regimes across long stretches of the Xingu's famous rapids. Rheophilic, rapids-dependent species like this one are considered especially vulnerable to exactly this kind of hydrological change, since reduced flow or altered flooding can eliminate the specific microhabitat they depend on entirely.
The Data Deficient rating reflects how poorly the species' full distribution and population status are understood, not an absence of threat — if anything, the known threats (a single major dam affecting its entire documented range) are unusually concentrated and severe for a DD-rated fish. Reassessment with better occurrence data, as both FishBase and IUCN sources note, is a stated need.
