Leporinus maxakali is a small headstander described in 2026 from the upper Rio Jequitinhonha basin in eastern Brazil, a coastal drainage system known for a high level of fish endemism. It is unusually small for a Leporinus — the largest known specimen reaches only 12.9 cm in standard length, a size the describing authors flag as uncommon among anostomids, most of which grow considerably larger. The species carries three large dark blotches down its flanks and a conspicuous red spot on the back of the upper lip, and its epithet honours the Maxakali, an indigenous people of the region. Genetic data place it close to several other small-bodied Leporinus in the L. melanopleura group, and its describing authors warn that its restricted range leaves it vulnerable to the array of human pressures already affecting eastern Brazil's coastal river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Leporinus maxakali was described in 2026 by José Luís Olivan Birindelli, Fábio Vieira and Júlio César Garavello, based on morphological and molecular (DNA barcoding, COI) evidence from tributaries of the upper Rio Jequitinhonha basin in eastern Brazil. It belongs to the family Anostomidae — the headstanders — within the order Characiformes, a family named for the steep, head-down angle at which many species feed rather than for any anatomical 'standing' structure.

Phylogenetic analysis placed the new species within the L. melanopleura clade, alongside L. amblyrhynchus, L. melanopleura, L. melanopleurodes and L. microphthalmus, all small-to-modest-sized Leporinus. COI barcode divergence from its two closest relatives in that clade, L. microphthalmus and L. amblyrhynchus, ranged from 3.8% to 8.5%, and every sampled specimen of the new species formed a distinct genetic cluster separate from those congeners. The specific epithet honours the Maxakali, an indigenous people of eastern Brazil; the full published rationale for the dedication was not accessible for this article, whose source is limited to the paper's abstract.

Morphology

Leporinus maxakali is diagnosed from its congeners by a specific combination of dental and scale characters — three premaxillary teeth and four dentary teeth, together with 12 scale rows around the caudal peduncle — alongside a distinctive colour pattern of three large dark blotches spaced along the midline of the body and a conspicuous red spot on the rear portion of the upper lip. Habitat
