One of the few bristlenose plecos native to a closed endorheic system, Ancistrus martini is endemic to the Lake Maracaibo basin of northwestern Venezuela and northeastern Colombia — an ancient, partially land-locked lake basin quite unlike the open Amazonian drainages that house most of the genus. Small, hardy, and bearing the characteristic tentacled snout of breeding males, it offers advanced pleco enthusiasts a genuine rarity: a well-documented wild provenance and a tight biogeographic story to go with it.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus martini was formally described by Leonard P. Schultz in 1944 in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum (volume 94, no. 3172, pp. 302, Pl. 9, figs. C–D). The holotype (USNM 121064) and paratypes were collected from the Río Táchira, 7 kilometres north of San Antonio, in the Río Catatumbo system of Venezuela — a tributary of the Lake Maracaibo drainage. The species was originally described as Ancistrus triradiatus martini, then raised to full species status by Isbrücker in 1980 without a formal redescription.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) treats Ancistrus martini Schultz 1944 as the valid name, with the following subjective synonyms now collapsed into it: Ancistrus bodenhameri, Ancistrus brevifilis bodenhameri, and the original combination Ancistrus triradiatus martini. In 2013, Taphorn, Armbruster, Villa-Navarro, and Ray ('Trans-Andean Ancistrus', Zootaxa 3641) synonymised A. bodenhameri with A. martini, clarifying that the trans-Andean bristlenose plecos of the Maracaibo basin represent a single species.

The genus Ancistrus (Kner, 1854) takes its name from the Greek agkistron (hook), alluding to the hooked interopercular odontodes that bristle-like from the cheeks of adult males. Within Loricariidae, Ancistrus sits in the subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini — the largest and most diverse loricariid assemblage (Armbruster 2004).

Morphology

Ancistrus martini is a compact pleco, reaching approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL) — matching the size of other small Ancistrus species and consistent with the maximum reported by Fisch-Muller (2003) in the freshwater fishes checklist. The body is clothed in the overlapping bony scutes characteristic of all Loricariidae, forming a flexible but protective armour. Ground colour is typically dark brown to olive-black, with the flanks and dorsal surface frequently bearing fine pale vermiculations or diffuse pale spotting; some individuals show a more uniform dark dorsum. The ventrum is pale.

The defining characteristic of the genus is the snout tentacles (soft fleshy growths termed odontode-bearing filaments or 'bushy tentacles') on the head of mature males. In A. martini males the tentacles are well developed and may branch; in females, tentacles are absent or confined to very short marginal growths along the snout edge. Images from the upper Zulia River (Gustavo Ballen, Nathan Lujan — archived on PlanetCatfish) show both spotted-ventrum and vermiculated-ventrum morphs, suggesting some intraspecific variation within the Maracaibo basin.

The head is broad and depressed, the mouth suctorial and ventral. The pectoral spine is stout and plays a role in cave defence; the dorsal fin carries one spine and typically seven soft rays. The caudal fin is lunate.

Habitat

The Lake Maracaibo basin is an exceptional biogeographic unit: a lowland lake — one of the world's oldest — connected to the sea only via the narrow Strait of Maracaibo, flanked by the Andes to the west and south and the Perijá mountains to the northwest. Ancistrus martini occurs throughout the lake's tributary rivers, including the Catatumbo, Táchira, Zulia, and their affluents, in both Venezuela and Colombia.

The basin supports warm, mildly acidic to near-neutral waters. The Catatumbo and Zulia rivers carry whitewater characteristics — moderately turbid, mildly mineralised flows from highland deforestation and agricultural runoff, though headwater reaches retain cleaner, cooler conditions. Schultz's type locality at the Río Táchira sits near the Colombian border at moderate elevation, suggesting the species tolerates some altitudinal range within the basin.

Like most Ancistrus, A. martini is closely associated with rocky substrate, submerged wood, and root tangles where biofilm and algae colonise hard surfaces. It is classified as a facultative air-breather (FishBase), which assists survival during seasonal low-oxygen periods common in floodplain backwaters.

Feeding

Ancistrus martini is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer in the wild — scraping algae, diatoms, and the microbial films that develop on rocky and woody substrates using its suctorial mouth and fine, bicuspid teeth. Field specimens typically show gut contents dominated by algae, detritus, and organic particles. The diet broadly matches what is known for other small Ancistrus: primarily algal and plant material, with incidental invertebrate protein from the biofilm community.

In the aquarium, the species accepts most standard pleco fare. Blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, green beans, and spinach are readily taken. Algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking discs form a useful staple. Occasional protein supplementation — small sinking pellets, daphnia, or frozen bloodworm — is appropriate but should not be the primary food source; excess protein can stress the digestive tract over time. Driftwood for rasping is beneficial and probably necessary for long-term gut health, though A. martini is not the dedicated xylophage that Panaqolus or Panaque species are.

Mating

Courtship and territorial behaviour in A. martini follow the general Ancistrus pattern. Males establish ownership of a candidate breeding site — typically a cave, crevice, hollow log, or similar tight space — and defend it against rival males using the interopercular odontodes as both display and threat structures. When two males clash, they may press their odontode-armoured cheeks against each other in a form of ritualized combat.

A conditioned female is visibly broader-bodied when gravid and will investigate the male's prepared site. The male entices her inside, and if she accepts, spawning follows with eggs adhesively deposited on the cave ceiling or walls. The male's tentacles are presumed to play a role in tactile communication during courtship, and their full expression indicates hormonal readiness as much as species recognition. Females may visit several males' territories before committing to spawn.

Breeding

Ancistrus martini is a cave-spawning species with paternal brood care, as is standard for the genus. The male selects and defends a suitably narrow cavity, cleans it, and after the female deposits her clutch, he remains inside to guard and fan the eggs. Egg-fanning is critical: the rapid fin movement maintains water circulation and prevents fungal infection of the clutch. Infertile or fungused eggs are consumed.

Eggs are amber-yellow and relatively large for a small pleco — typically 20–50 per clutch, though this varies with female condition. Incubation takes approximately 5–7 days at 75–79 °F. Newly hatched larvae possess a large yolk sac and cling to the cave surface; the male continues guarding until the yolk is absorbed and fry begin to disperse and rasp independently, usually within another week. Conditioning adults on a varied diet, performing regular water changes, and allowing slight seasonal temperature variation can trigger spawning attempts in captivity. No specific breeding reports are logged on PlanetCatfish for this species, suggesting it is rarely kept and bred compared to the more widespread Ancistrus temminckii or A. dolichopterus.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus martini is rarely available in the hobby — it carries no L-number and lacks the commercial recognition of common bristlenose plecos such as A. temminckii or the aquarium-bred albino strains. Hobbyists seeking it must typically source wild-caught specimens from specialist importers handling Venezuelan or Colombian collections, or occasionally from European breeders who have worked with the species.

Care requirements are similar to other small Ancistrus: a minimum of 15–20 US gal is appropriate for a single adult; a species tank or biotope for a pair requires at least 20 US gal with multiple hiding places and clearly separated male territories. Water chemistry should reflect the Lake Maracaibo basin: temperatures 72–81 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness. The species is not demanding in terms of water chemistry precision, but clean, well-oxygenated water and weekly partial water changes of 25–30% are essential.

Driftwood and smooth rocks providing crevices are non-negotiable furnishings. Hardy broad-leaved plants such as Anubias tied to wood complement the setup without risk of herbivory. The species is peaceful toward other fish and makes an excellent inhabitant in community tanks with other small South American species — tetras, small Corydoras, and livebearers are all suitable companions. Males must be given enough territory to avoid chronic aggression; two males in too small a space leads to stress and fin damage.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus martini as Least Concern in 2021 (FishBase, citing version 2025-2 of the Red List), reflecting a reasonably wide distribution across the Lake Maracaibo basin and the absence of evidence for significant range decline or severe overexploitation. The species is not targeted by commercial fisheries and plays no prominent role in the ornamental trade at scale.

The Lake Maracaibo basin, however, faces serious ongoing environmental stress. The lake itself — one of the largest in South America — is subject to intense oil extraction, agricultural runoff, urban effluent, and widespread deforestation of its tributary catchments. The Catatumbo River drainage has experienced dramatic forest loss and is also known as one of the world's most active lightning regions, a fragile and biodiverse system under pressure. Sedimentation, water-quality decline, and flow alteration in the lake's feeder rivers pose plausible long-term threats to benthic loricariids like A. martini, even if current population levels do not trigger a threatened category under IUCN criteria.
