Ancistrus tombador is a small, plainly patterned bristlenose from the headwaters of the Tapajós basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil — a species so anatomically atypical for its genus that its identity was long overlooked. The complete absence of an adipose fin and a distinctly narrow, depressed body set it apart from almost every other Ancistrus, while the rugged cerrado-gallery-forest streams of Serra do Tombador that form its home give the fish its name.

Taxonomy & naming

Ancistrus tombador was described by Sonia Fisch-Muller, Airton Ramos Cardoso, Júlio Francisco Pezzi da Silva, and Vinicius Abilhoa Bertaco in 2005, published in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie (volume 112, number 2, pages 559–572), in a paper titled 'Three new species of Ancistrus Kner (Teleostei: Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the upper Tapajós and Tocantins rivers'. The holotype (MCP 33000) was collected from igarapé Ribeirão Preto, a small stream on road MT-338 approximately 16 mi from Porto dos Gaúchos (11°39'27"S, 57°12'07"W), in the rio Arinos drainage, upper rio Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Additional paratypes were deposited at MCP (Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia, Porto Alegre) and MHNG (Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Genève).

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Ancistrus tombador Fisch-Muller, Cardoso, da Silva & Bertaco 2005, with no synonyms. Distribution is stated as the upper Tapajós River basin, Brazil.

The species epithet tombador refers to Serra do Tombador, the highland area in Mato Grosso where the type locality is situated — a geographically and botanically significant cerrado plateau. The genus Ancistrus Kner, 1854 takes its name from the Greek agkistron (hook), alluding to the hooked interopercular odontodes that are the hallmark of bristlenose catfishes.

Morphology

At approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL) per FishBase, Ancistrus tombador is a small bristlenose, broadly comparable to the familiar A. dolichopterus and relatives in gross body size but distinctly different in form. The most immediately conspicuous morphological character is the complete absence of an adipose fin — a highly unusual feature in Ancistrus that it shares only with A. reisi and A. jataiensis. In place of the adipose fin, a series of three to five median unpaired platelets forms a low, ridge-like crest, followed by at least two (more often three) dermal plates of the dorso-lateral series that join dorsally. This immediately separates A. tombador from A. reisi and A. jataiensis, in which the platelets are nearly immediately followed by the plate-like procurrent caudal rays.

The body is notably narrow — cleithral width 27.5–31.2% SL (mean 29.4%) — and the caudal peduncle is unusually long and depressed (peduncle depth 8.3–9.2% SL, mean 8.7%). These proportions give A. tombador a more attenuated appearance than typical Ancistrus. The snout margin is broadly naked, and tentacles are usually absent in both sexes — another diagnostic departure from the heavily tentacled males typical of the genus. Dorsal soft rays: 8; anal soft rays: 5; vertebrae: 28.

Coloration in preserved material and field photographs shows a relatively uniform brownish body with fine darker spotting on the scutes; the pattern is less boldly contrasted than that of many Ancistrus species. Males develop small tentacles on the snout, though these are less elaborate than in many congeners.

Habitat

The type locality and only confirmed collecting sites for A. tombador lie within the upper Tapajós basin of Mato Grosso — specifically streams draining the Serra do Tombador plateau in the cerrado biome. The Arinos River, a major upper-Tapajós tributary, drains this region; the fish inhabits small, forested igarapés (gallery-forest streams) that flow over sandy, gravelly, and rocky substrates.

The cerrado of western Mato Grosso is a seasonally variable landscape: streams experience pronounced wet-season flooding and dry-season contraction. Water in these gallery-forest streams is typically clear to slightly turbid, with moderate to low pH depending on the degree of leaf-litter influence, and temperatures that fluctuate somewhat with season. The small-river habitat noted by Fisch-Muller et al. (2005) implies moderate current, rocky or cobble substrates, and the presence of submerged wood and leaf litter providing shelter.

PlanetCatfish distribution data indicate the species is known from the Amazon basin, specifically the Tapajós, Upper Tapajós, Juruena, and Arinos drainages. It has not been reported from outside this region. IUCN assessors (2018) noted insufficient data to characterise population size or trend, assigning Data Deficient status in part because of the narrow known distribution and limited survey effort in this remote upland area.

Feeding

Like all Ancistrus species, A. tombador is primarily a benthic grazer. The broad, ventrally positioned, suckermouth with bicuspid teeth enables the fish to rasp algae and biofilm from rock, wood, and substrate surfaces. In the small forest streams it inhabits, periphyton on submerged stones and woody debris likely forms the core diet, supplemented by fine organic detritus, leaf fragments, and any benthic invertebrates inadvertently consumed.

The naked, tentacle-reduced snout in this species may reflect a microhabitat preference for smooth rock surfaces in moderate current rather than the coarser woody habitats exploited by heavily-tentacled Ancistrus in larger rivers.

In captivity, care requirements extrapolate directly from well-established protocols for the genus: a primarily plant-based diet is appropriate. Algae wafers and spirulina-rich sinking foods should be the staple. Fresh vegetables — blanched courgette (zucchini), cucumber, sweet potato, and leafy greens — are accepted and beneficial. A small proportion of more protein-rich food (white mosquito larvae, bloodworm, or catfish granules) can be given occasionally. Pieces of driftwood or smooth rock surfaces in a well-lit tank will support microalgal growth that the fish will graze.

Mating

No breeding observations specific to A. tombador have been published (PlanetCatfish logs no breeding reports for this species), so courtship behaviour must be inferred from the broader Ancistrus framework. Male Ancistrus are territorial around cave sites from which they court females. Even in this species where tentacles are reduced, the male's developing tentacles on the snout head, combined with interopercular odontode display, function as signals during courtship. Males patrol and defend a hollow or tight crevice, and may obstruct the entrance with their body to prevent rival males from entering.

A gravid female will be recognisably broader-bodied than the male, especially in the posterior abdominal region. Courtship involves the male vibrating or quivering, which appears to stimulate the female to enter the cavity. Spawning takes place inside the shelter, out of the line of sight of predators and rival males.

Providing multiple separate cave sites in captivity reduces male competition and increases the probability of successful pair formation. Ceramic tubes, half-flower pots, coconut shells, or tight sections of hollow driftwood all serve as acceptable spawning chambers.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Ancistrus tombador has been reported in the scientific or hobbyist literature (PlanetCatfish, 2010–present). Given the species' apparent rarity in the trade and the lack of hobbyist familiarity, captive propagation has not been attempted in documented form.

The general Ancistrus breeding protocol is nonetheless well established and would apply here. Ancistrus are cave-spawners with paternal brood care: after spawning, the male fans the adhesive egg mass within the shelter to maintain oxygen levels and removes fungused eggs. Clutch sizes in the genus vary widely — from a few dozen to over 100 eggs depending on female size — but a small species like A. tombador would likely produce clutches toward the lower end of this range. Incubation typically takes 4–6 days at tropical temperatures (77–81 °F). The fry absorb the yolk sac over the following week and then begin grazing on algae and biofilm.

In practice, conditioning adults with high-quality varied food, performing regular partial water changes, and providing suitable breeding caves is the standard approach. The cerrado-gallery-forest origin of this species suggests tolerance for relatively neutral to slightly acidic water and seasonal temperature variation may be relevant conditioning stimuli.

In the aquarium

Ancistrus tombador is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby: it carries no L-number, is very rarely imported, and lacks a hobbyist profile. Its modest size (~2.5 in SL) makes it theoretically suitable for smaller aquaria — a 15–20 US gal tank would accommodate a single specimen — but the combination of Data Deficient IUCN status, restricted distribution, and absence of captive-bred stock means that any specimen reaching the trade has almost certainly been wild-caught.

For the rare aquarist who does obtain this species, the care framework from familiar small Ancistrus applies. Water temperature 75–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, moderate hardness (up to ~15 °dH). The fish requires good filtration, moderate current, and well-oxygenated water. Hiding places — caves, hollow wood, slate tunnels — are essential, both for daytime shelter and as potential spawning sites. The absence of tentacles and the narrow body suggest the fish may prefer tight crevices over open wood caves. A mixed diet of algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein food is appropriate.

Compatibility is generally good with peaceful community fish. Male A. tombador may defend cave sites from other bottom-dwelling plecos; single-species or single-individual husbandry is advisable unless the aquarium is large enough to support multiple separated territories.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Ancistrus tombador as Data Deficient (DD) in 2018. The DD designation reflects the limited available information about population size, range extent, and threats rather than confirming the species is secure. The known distribution is restricted to small streams in the upper Tapajós basin of Mato Grosso — a region that, while still holding relatively intact cerrado and gallery forest in Serra do Tombador, faces ongoing threats from agricultural expansion, soy-farming infrastructure, and associated riparian degradation.

The cerrado biome of central Brazil is one of the world's most threatened savannah ecosystems, with the vast majority of native cerrado already converted to agriculture. Small endemic stream fishes in this biome are inherently vulnerable to deforestation-driven increases in sedimentation and altered hydrology that degrade their small-stream microhabitats.

A. tombador has no formal protection status at the species level beyond the IUCN assessment. It is of no commercial interest (FishBase notes it as 'of no interest' to fisheries) and is absent from the ornamental trade in any meaningful volume. Monitoring of stream condition across its known range, and targeted surveys to clarify the full extent of its distribution, would be the most useful near-term conservation actions.
