Chaetostoma branickii is a compact, hard-water rubbernose pleco from the high-altitude rivers of northern Peru, where it clings to boulders in the oxygen-rich, fast-flowing streams of the upper Marañón drainage. With a restricted range defined by just three known localities — one of which gave it its type description in 1881 — and mounting pressure from mining and potential damming, it carries IUCN Vulnerable status, making it one of the few Chaetostoma species with an immediate conservation flag.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma branickii was described by Franz Steindachner in 1881, in his series 'Beiträge zur Kenntniss der Flussfische Südamerika's' (Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe, vol. 43: 103–146, pl. 6 figs. 1–1b). The type locality is the Río Chota (Chotano), near Cajamarca in northern Peru, at an elevation of approximately 1,465–1,1919 ft above sea level. Steindachner placed the species in the now-invalid genus Chaetostomus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats as a synonym of Chaetostoma Tschudi, 1846; the valid combination is therefore Chaetostoma branickii Steindachner, 1881.

The FishBase taxonomy note records that the type locality was localised via the collector Sztolcman's field notes as reported in Stephan and Traylor (1983: 28), but no more recent revision has revised the taxon. A 2024 paper by Meza-Vargas, Ramirez and Lujan describing a new Chaetostoma from the Ucayali drainage placed C. branickii in a morphological context alongside 48 other valid species, treating it as a distinct species distinguishable by its pattern of white spots or vermiculations on the head against a dark background. The genus Chaetostoma currently holds 49 valid species (Meza-Vargas et al. 2022 tally, updated 2024); it belongs to subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini. The name Chaetostoma breve is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Chaetostoma branickii is a stocky, broad-headed pleco with a maximum standard length of approximately 5.5 in (PlanetCatfish: 5.5 in SL; FishBase: 5 in SL). The genus is characterised by having the anterior and anterolateral snout margin free of plates — the broad band of naked skin that creates the soft, rubber-like snout tip responsible for the common name 'rubbernose'. Interopercular odontodes (bristle-like spines behind the gill cover) are well developed, especially in males. The abdomen is unplated, another genus-level character.

Coloration in C. branickii is dark grey to black on the head and dorsal surface, overlaid with white to cream spots or vermiculations roughly half to twice the diameter of the nostril opening. The body bears highly variable white markings — spots, streaks, or partial bands — and the dorsal and caudal fins are indistinctly patterned with zero to four bands. This variability distinguishes it from close relatives: C. anomalum, C. dorsale, and C. thomsoni share the spotted head pattern, while C. leucomelas (which has five or more consistent fin bands) does not.

Sexual dimorphism is present: males develop a larger and broader head, proportionally larger pelvic fins, and a slimmer ventral profile than females. The enlarged pelvic fins of males are thought to play a role in fertilisation during spawning in fast currents, being inverted over the clutch to reduce sperm dispersal (PlanetCatfish). Females become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Chaetostoma branickii is endemic to Peru, known from three main areas: the type locality in the upper Chotano River (Río Chota, Cajamarca), the upper Chamaya River basin within the upper Marañón drainage, and the upper Cenepa and Huachi Rivers (National University of San Marcos natural history collections). The IUCN estimates its total extent of occurrence at approximately 20,0 mi², a restricted range for a species of this size.

All localities lie in the high-Andean foothills of northern Peru at elevations above 1,0 ft. The streams here are cold to cool (typically 59–72 °F), clear to moderately turbid, highly oxygenated, and fast-flowing over boulder and cobble substrates. These are the archetypal Chaetostoma conditions — Andean torrential environments where the species clings to hard substrate using its powerful suction disc, feeding on algae and periphyton encrusting the rocks. The IUCN habitat classification is permanent rivers and streams (Wetlands inland). The species is also recorded from areas with 'white water rivers, particularly to the west of the Andes', suggesting it tolerates some mineralisation. The western Andean and trans-Andean position is consistent with its placement in Chaetostoma, most species of which are Andean or Coastal Range endemics.

Feeding

Like all Chaetostoma, C. branickii is a periphyton and algae grazer. The jaw morphology — with a broad, toothless lower lip and small, bicuspid teeth arranged in curved rows on both jaws — is adapted for scraping biofilm and filamentous algae from the surface of boulders and cobbles. Lujan and Armbruster (2011, Journal of Morphology) characterised Chaetostoma as having a mandible shape optimised for suction-gripping and scraping rather than biting, consistent with a primarily herbivore/aufwuchs guild.

Field studies on congeners indicate that macroinvertebrates associated with the periphyton are also consumed opportunistically (Maldonado-Ocampo et al. 2005, Ortega-Lara et al. 2000, 2002). In captivity, the diet should centre on algae wafers, spirulina discs, and blanched vegetables. Supplements of meaty frozen foods (bloodworm, Artemia) should be modest and occasional — this is not a carnivorous species and excess protein can cause digestive stress. Providing smooth water-worn stones on which algae can establish gives the fish the naturalistic grazing surface it requires.

Mating

Sexual dimorphism in the genus provides clear visual cues for pair identification. The male's broader head, enlarged pelvic fins, and developed interopercular odontodes are most conspicuous when fish are in breeding condition. In wild conditions, Chaetostoma are reported as nocturnal and benthic, sheltering in caves or under logs during the day (Ortega-Lara et al. 1999, 2002), which implies that courtship likely occurs in or near such refuges after dark.

Male territorial behaviour around preferred spawning sites has been inferred from congeners rather than confirmed directly in C. branickii. Males presumably display to and court ripe females within or at the entrance to rocky crevices or cavities in the substrate. The genus has male parental care 'through surveillance of the eggs hidden in the current' (IUCN assessment citing Vargas 2012), a description that fits shallow, fast-water spawning sites where eggs are guarded by the male oriented over them. No courtship or mating observations specific to C. branickii have been published.

Breeding

Chaetostoma species spawn on the undersides of flat objects or in shallow crevices in fast-flowing water, with the male guarding an adhesive clutch by covering it with his body (PlanetCatfish). The enlarged pelvic fins of the male are inverted over the clutch to impede sperm dispersal in the current during fertilisation. Male parental care continues through incubation; the male fans and guards until the eggs hatch.

No confirmed captive breeding report exists for C. branickii on PlanetCatfish, and the literature contains no published account of its reproductive biology in detail. Given the cold high-altitude origin of the species (59–72 °F), aquarium breeding attempts would logically use cooler, well-oxygenated conditions mimicking Andean stream water — soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral, with strong current over smooth flat stones. The general Chaetostoma pattern suggests clutch sizes of a few dozen adhesive eggs, with an incubation period of around seven to ten days at cool temperatures. Fry, when they emerge, should be capable of rasping periphyton almost immediately.

In the aquarium

Chaetostoma branickii is extremely rarely encountered in the hobby. It carries no L-number designation and is not established in the ornamental trade; it does not appear on PlanetCatfish's registered keeper or breeding lists, and no wish-list entries are recorded. This reflects both its restricted Peruvian range and its IUCN Vulnerable status, which discourages casual collection.

For the dedicated keeper who does obtain specimens, care requirements mirror those of better-known Chaetostoma species. The key parameter is well-oxygenated, cool water: a temperature of 63–72 °F suits the high-altitude provenance, with strong filtration and surface agitation to maintain dissolved oxygen. pH should be near neutral to slightly acidic (6.5–7.2), and hardness can be soft to moderate. A rocky aquascape with smooth water-worn stones or slate — over which algae can grow — is essential. The fish will not thrive without a natural algal food source in addition to supplied wafers.

The species is peaceful and can be combined with other cool-water, fast-water fish. Tank size should be at least 25 US gal for a pair. Avoid warm tropical conditions; sustained temperatures above 77 °F are inappropriate and will cause stress and shortened lifespan. Providing a robust current using powerheads replicates the fast-river conditions this species requires.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma branickii as Vulnerable (B1ab(iii)) in 2014 (Ortega Torres et al. 2016). The criterion reflects a restricted extent of occurrence estimated at approximately 20,0 mi², only three known locations, and a continuing decline in habitat quality driven by specific threats at each location.

At the Chotano locality, large-scale industrial mining in tributaries of the Chotano River is degrading water quality. In the Chamaya/Cenepa/Huachi areas, subsistence fishing using rotenone — extracted from barbasco (Lonchocarpus) plants — kills fish without selectivity, with inadequate regulation of dosage. Additionally, proposals for dam construction in the Marañón River basin could inundate or hydrologically alter the species' fast-water habitat in the future.

The species does occur within Parque Nacional Cordillera del Cóndor, offering some level of in situ protection at one part of its range. However, the IUCN assessment was flagged as needing updating as of the 2016 publication, suggesting that conservation status may have changed — potentially worsening — as mining activity has intensified in northern Peru since 2014. No ex situ conservation programme for this species is documented.
