Taxonomy & naming
Cordylancistrus setosus was originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1887 as Chaetostomus setosus, published in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 5, volume 19, number 113, page 349). The new combination Cordylancistrus setosus was erected by Isbrücker in 1980 (p. 45), following Regan's earlier revision (1904: 239, pl. 12, fig. 2). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Cordylancistrus setosus (Boulenger, 1887) as the valid combination — the authority is parenthesised because the original generic placement has since changed.
Taxonomic placement at genus level remains an open question among researchers. PlanetCatfish currently lists this species as Cordylancistrus setosus (Boulenger, 1887), citing Cordylancistrus setosus and Lasiancistrus setosus as synonyms and noting a different genus-level scheme than that followed by FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes. No L-number has been assigned, and no common name appears in the primary or secondary literature. The species belongs to the tribe Ancistrini within subfamily Hypostominae.

Morphology
Detailed meristic and morphometric data for this species are sparse, as the scientific record is based on the original holotype. FishBase records a maximum size of 4.7 in total length (TL) for this species, while PlanetCatfish cites 4.72 in standard length (SL) — figures likely derived from the same holotype measurements. As with all loricariids, the body is armoured in overlapping bony scutes. The genus name Dolichancistrus alludes to an elongated body form: Greek dolichos (long) combined with agkistron (hook), the latter shared with the broader Ancistrin group.
Beyond these basic data, no detailed meristic counts or colour descriptions from modern specimens are available in the accessible literature. The species is known to be a facultative air-breather (FishBase Ref. 126274), a trait common across loricariids inhabiting seasonally variable or oxygen-limited habitats. Data sparse beyond holotype.
Habitat
The type locality is recorded only as "Andes of Colombia" — no river basin, no altitude, and no precise coordinates are given in the original description or any subsequent revision. Boulenger's 1887 collection was typical of Victorian museum acquisitions, where broad geographic labels often substituted for field data.
The genus Dolichancistrus is associated with fast-flowing Andean foothill streams and rheophilic microhabitats: high-gradient channels, rock and cobble substrates, and well-oxygenated water with strong current. If C. setosus conforms to the general pattern of close relatives in the Ancistrini, it would inhabit the underside of boulders and rock faces in torrential or near-torrential conditions, using its ventrally positioned sucker mouth to anchor against current. Water chemistry in Colombian Andean rivers varies considerably by altitude and drainage, but highland streams are typically cool, soft to moderately hard, and well-oxygenated. Feeding

Any aquarium guidance would therefore be speculative extrapolation from relatives in Dolichancistrus or Cordylancistrus, which typically require strongly oxygenated, moderately cool water with significant current, a diet of algae wafers and biofilm, and rocky hiding places that mimic fast-water boulder substrates. Andean streams in Colombia face pressures from deforestation, artisanal mining, agricultural runoff, and hydroelectric development — stressors that affect benthic loricariids, which depend on intact rocky substrates and clean, well-oxygenated water. Without confirmed contemporary records, the conservation status of this species remains genuinely unknown.
