Taxonomy & naming
Otocinclus juruenae was formally described by Alexandre Cunha Ribeiro and Pablo Lehmann A. in 2016 in Zootaxa (volume 4147, no. 3, pp. 240–246, doi: 10.11646/zootaxa.4147.3.2). The holotype (MZUSP 120361) was collected from a bridge over the Rio São João da Barra, Juara, in the Rio Juruena drainage, Tapajós basin, Mato Grosso, Brazil (10°18'46"S, 57°38'44"W); paratypes are lodged at CPUFMT and MCP. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, spid=74417) recognises the valid combination Otocinclus juruenae Ribeiro & Lehmann A. 2016, confirmed also by Delapieve et al. (2018).
The specific epithet juruenae is a Latin genitive adjective honouring the Rio Juruena, the type locality's drainage — a right-bank tributary of the Rio Tapajós. FishBase notes that the epithet is adjectival in form, meaning 'of the Juruena'.
Otocinclus belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within Loricariidae. The genus was revised most comprehensively by Schaefer (1997) and contains around 17–19 valid species depending on treatment, making it one of the more species-rich small-bodied loricariid genera. O. juruenae was described in the context of a growing recognition that multiple genetically and morphologically distinct 'otocinclus' lineages exist within what had been loosely treated as a few widespread species, reflecting ongoing cryptic diversity in lowland Neotropical rivers.
Morphology
Otocinclus juruenae is tiny: maximum standard length 1.5 in SL per the original description (Ribeiro & Lehmann A. 2016), placing it among the smallest Otocinclus known. The body is elongated and moderately depressed, as typical of the genus. The most important diagnostic features that distinguish O. juruenae from most of its congeners are: (1) a complete lateral line without gap plates, shared otherwise only with O. cocama among described species; and (2) the presence of an iris operculum (a moveable flap over the pupil), which O. juruenae shares with O. flexilis and O. xakriaba but not with the 'orbis clade' species (O. bororo, O. caxarari, O. hoppei, O. huaorani, O. macrospilus, O. mariae, O. mura, O. vestitus, O. vittatus, O. batmani, O. cocama).
Coloration consists of three to four diffuse, irregular dark pigment blotches along the lateral trunk, without a distinct continuous midlateral stripe — differentiating it from O. flexilis and O. xakriaba, which share the iris operculum character but possess a distinct stripe. Body shape in profile is elongated, the head moderately broad and flat, the mouth ventral and disc-like. Scale rows and fin counts fall within the typical Otocinclus range. No described sexual dimorphism has been formally documented for the species.
Habitat
Otocinclus juruenae is known only from the Rio Juruena drainage in Mato Grosso, central Brazil — specifically the Tapajós basin, where the Juruena is the major right-bank headwater. The Tapajós system drains the central Brazilian Plateau, carrying clear to slightly turbid water over sandy and rocky beds. Unlike the blackwater Rio Negro or the whitewater Solimões, Tapajós tributaries are typically clearwater rivers with moderate transparency, relatively low conductivity, and circumneutral to mildly acidic pH.
Field collections by Ribeiro & Lehmann (2016) place the type locality at a bridge over the Rio São João da Barra near Juara, Mato Grosso — a small, clear tributary. This is a characteristically shallow, seasonal stream in the cerrado-Amazon transition zone, subject to pronounced wet/dry seasonality. Water temperatures in the central Brazilian interior vary seasonally from approximately 72 °F (dry season, June–August) to 82–86 °F in the wet season. Otocinclus generally inhabit dense aquatic vegetation, plant roots, and submerged debris in slow-moving or standing marginal waters, and it is likely that O. juruenae occupies similar microhabitats along the Juruena's vegetated margins.
The species has not been found outside the Juruena drainage in any published record to date, though the basin has been relatively little surveyed.
Feeding
Otocinclus juruenae, like all members of the genus, is a periphyton and algae grazer. The ventral sucker mouth and fine, pectinate teeth are adapted for rasping thin algal films — principally diatoms and green algae — from flat surfaces including plant leaves, submerged stones, and wood. In the cerrado-Amazon streams of Mato Grosso, the principal feeding substrate is likely the thin biofilm on macrophyte and aquatic grass surfaces in shallow, sun-lit marginal areas.
No specific dietary study of O. juruenae exists. Stomach-content analyses of other Otocinclus species show that diatoms and fine plant material typically dominate the gut, with some detritus and microalgae. As in all Otocinclus, the diet is strictly vegetarian in the field; the fish will not prey on other organisms.
In captivity, O. juruenae is unlikely to have established specific care practices separate from those of the common otocinclus (O. vittatus, O. affinis, etc.) given its very recent description and rarity in trade. The same principles apply: a mature, algae-producing tank with sufficient grazing surface is essential. Supplementary feeding with blanched cucumber, courgette, and spirulina wafers is standard practice; a diet restricted to algae alone risks starvation in most aquariums. A minimum of 4–6 individuals is advisable, as the genus is social and individuals do better in groups.
Mating
No published courtship observations exist for Otocinclus juruenae. Given the species' very recent description (2016) and its absence from the hobby trade so far, captive observations have not been reported.
The genus Otocinclus has been bred in captivity for many decades, and the basic courtship pattern of the group is well documented for O. vittatus, O. macrospilus, and a few other species. Males actively pursue ripe females, following them closely and nudging or pushing them toward suitable spawning surfaces. The female presses her ventral surface against a leaf or the tank glass, and the male arcs alongside her in a characteristic T-position; a small batch of adhesive eggs (typically 3–15 eggs) is deposited and fertilised in each embrace. Pairs or groups return to the same site repeatedly across a spawning session.
Whether O. juruenae follows this same pattern is very likely, given the strong conservatism of reproductive behaviour across the genus. Environmental triggers appear to include a drop in temperature (mimicking the dry-to-wet season transition) followed by a temperature rise, combined with water changes that simulate dilution from early seasonal rains. These cues are consistent with the central Brazilian cerrado seasonal cycle that the species experiences in the Juruena basin.
Breeding
No documented captive breeding of Otocinclus juruenae has been published or reported on PlanetCatfish. The species was described in 2016 and has had minimal presence in the aquarium trade, so this is expected rather than surprising.
All described Otocinclus for which breeding has been achieved in captivity are open-water, scatter-spawners depositing small batches of adhesive eggs on smooth surfaces (plant leaves, aquarium glass, broad-leaved plants such as Anubias or Echinodorus). Clutch sizes per spawning session are small — typically tens to low hundreds of eggs over a multi-day period — but the total reproductive output is substantial when conditions are right. Eggs hatch in approximately two days at 77 °F; larvae are tiny but free-swimming within a further day and begin grazing biofilm almost immediately. Parental care is absent after egg deposition.
To attempt breeding O. juruenae specifically, the logical approach is to follow the established Otocinclus protocol: condition a group (at least 2–3 males per female) on a rich diet; cool the tank briefly by 37–41 °F for a week; resume normal temperature and perform a substantial water change (30–40%) with slightly cooler, soft water; provide broad-leaved plants or clean glass spawning surfaces. The very small adult size (1.5 in SL) means that even tiny batches of offspring could be difficult to raise without infusoria-level food cultures available.
In the aquarium
Otocinclus juruenae is not currently established in the ornamental trade and is not available through standard importers. It was described from a single locality within a relatively remote part of the Tapajós system, and its distribution may be limited. It would require dedicated collection to enter the trade, which has not occurred in the decade since its description.
For hobbyists who encounter it, the species should be kept according to the standard Otocinclus husbandry guidelines applicable to the Tapajós/central Brazilian origin: temperature 72–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, moderate softness (GH under 12 °dH), well-filtered and well-oxygenated water. Group size of at least 6 is advisable. A mature, heavily planted tank with abundant natural algae is the preferred setup; supplementary vegetables and spirulina products can supplement the diet.
At 1.5 in SL maximum, O. juruenae is among the tiniest Otocinclus described, making it suitable even for nano aquariums (10 US gal or more) if water quality is rigorously maintained. Its compatibility with small peaceful fish — nano tetras, pygmy Corydoras, small rasboras — is excellent. It should not be kept with boisterous or large species that may outcompete it for food or stress it.
The species' IUCN status of Data Deficient (2020) reflects genuine gaps in knowledge about its distribution and abundance. Any hobbyist lucky enough to obtain specimens should document the source and care conditions carefully; even informal records contribute to knowledge of this little-known species.
Conservation
Otocinclus juruenae was assessed by the IUCN Red List in 2020 as Data Deficient — an appropriate designation given its discovery only four years prior and the very limited geographic sampling of the Juruena drainage at the time of assessment. FishBase confirms the DD status with an assessment date of 14 December 2020.
The Data Deficient category does not imply that the species is not at risk; it reflects the inability to assess risk due to inadequate information on distribution and population size. The Juruena basin and the broader Tapajós drainage have experienced significant deforestation pressure as the agricultural frontier of Mato Grosso has expanded. Soybean cultivation and cattle ranching in the catchment are associated with increased sedimentation, reduced riparian cover, and degradation of the shallow marginal habitats that Otocinclus depend upon. The construction of the Teles Pires and São Manoel hydroelectric complexes on the upper Tapajós tributaries has also altered hydrological dynamics in parts of the basin.
With a known range restricted to one drainage in one state of Brazil, and with no captive population established, O. juruenae's conservation status warrants continued monitoring. Further survey work in the Juruena and adjacent Tapajós tributaries is needed to determine whether the species is genuinely restricted to a small area or is more widespread but simply uncollected. Until such data exist, caution is warranted about any commercial collection.
