Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhaphis nudula was formally described by Roberto E. Reis and Edson H. L. Pereira in 1999, in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 10, number 4, pages 335–354). The species was originally placed in the genus Hemipsilichthys Eigenmann & Eigenmann, alongside two other new species from southern Brazil. Subsequent revision of the neoplecostominae lineage transferred it to Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro, 1918, where it is currently recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
The genus Pareiorhaphis belongs to subfamily Neoplecostominae, a clade of predominantly small, rheophilic loricariids endemic to Atlantic coastal drainages of south-eastern and southern Brazil. Some classification databases list the genus under Hypoptopomatinae, reflecting an older or alternative arrangement, but the original description and the dominant systematic treatments place Neoplecostominae as the applicable subfamily.
The epithet nudulus is Latin for 'quite naked' or 'nude' — a direct reference to the dramatically reduced plate armour that characterises this species. Among its congeners and within the broader subfamily, P. nudula is notable for the near-complete loss of dorsal plating, leaving much of the dorsal surface unprotected in comparison with typical loricariids.
This fish was long listed as Pareiorhaphis nudulus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Pareiorhaphis nudula, the valid name followed here.
Morphology
Pareiorhaphis nudula is a tiny fish: maximum recorded standard length is 1.3 in, making it one of the smallest loricariids catalogued in the scientific literature. The body is elongated and depressed in the typical loricariid fashion, but differs strikingly from most family members in the extent of dermal plate reduction.
Only the ventral and mid-ventral plate rows are normally developed; the dorsal plate series is greatly reduced or absent, giving the fish an unusually exposed appearance on its upper surface. Additional morphological reductions include the absence of the dorsal-fin spinelet and nuchal plate, and the loss of the connecting bone and ligament between the second dorsal-fin proximal radial and the rib of the sixth vertebral centrum. The lateral line is reduced, and the infraorbital sensory canal is absent. The adipose fin is also absent — a character absent in many neoplecostomines but notable here alongside the other reductions.
The dorsal fin has 8 soft rays; the anal fin has 4–5 soft rays. The fourth branched pelvic-fin ray is the longest, reaching to approximately the midpoint of the anal fin when depressed. The mouth is ventral and adapted for attaching to hard substrate in current. No sexual dimorphism has been documented in published accounts, and given the species' absence from captive settings, behavioural dimorphism is unknown.
Habitat
Pareiorhaphis nudula is recorded from four small coastal river systems in southern Brazil: the rio Araranguá and rio Mampituba drainages in the southern part of Santa Catarina state, and the rio Três Forquilhas and rio Maquiné drainages in the north-eastern portion of Rio Grande do Sul state. These rivers descend steeply from the Serra Geral escarpment to the Atlantic coastal plain, and in their upper and middle reaches they are characterised by clear, cold, well-oxygenated water flowing over exposed bedrock, boulders, and coarse gravel.
Field observations of related neoplecostomines in comparable streams record rheophilic conditions — moderate to strong current, low turbidity, and temperate water temperatures reflecting the altitude and latitude of these southern Atlantic Forest drainages. Individuals of the genus are typically found pressed tightly against the underside of rocks and large stones in riffle and run habitats. The reduction of dorsal plating in P. nudula may be a secondary adaptation to tight interstitial spaces between boulders, a hypothesis consistent with the biology of other extremely reduced loricariids.
FishBase notes that the genus Pareiorhaphis includes species capable of facultative air-breathing, a trait that may support survival in seasonally variable conditions. No water chemistry data specific to sites where P. nudula has been collected are available in the published record.
Feeding
No feeding studies specific to Pareiorhaphis nudula have been published. By analogy with other small neoplecostomines occupying similar stream microhabitats, the species is presumed to be a benthic grazer feeding primarily on periphyton, diatoms, and the fine detrital and algal biofilm coating rock surfaces in fast-flowing clear water. The trophic level assigned by FishBase is 2.3, consistent with a predominantly herbivore–detritivore diet with limited invertebrate content.
The ventral mouth and adhesive oral disc structure are well-suited to rasping biofilm from hard substrates in current. The species' small body size limits the scale of foraging relative to larger loricariids, but in riffle habitats where biofilm productivity on exposed rock can be high, small rheophilic grazers are often abundant.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been documented for Pareiorhaphis nudula. The species has not been maintained in captivity, and no field observations of courtship are recorded in the literature. Given the species' small size and its occurrence in fast-flowing streams, reproductive behaviour is expected to conform to the general neoplecostomine pattern of substrate attachment and limited parental involvement, but this remains speculative in the absence of direct observation.
Breeding
Reproductive biology of Pareiorhaphis nudula is undocumented. No captive breeding has been reported, and the species is absent from the aquarium hobby. The original description by Reis and Pereira (1999) does not include reproductive data. Based on patterns in related neoplecostomines, egg deposition on hard substrates in rheophilic microhabitats is likely, but clutch sizes, incubation periods, and the presence or absence of parental care are all unknown.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhaphis nudula does not appear in the aquarium hobby and has no record of captive maintenance. Its extremely small adult size (1.3 in SL), specialised rheophilic microhabitat requirements, restricted distribution in coastal southern Brazil, and absence from commercial collection networks mean it is unlikely to become available to aquarists. No husbandry parameters, dietary preferences, or tank requirements have been established through captive experience.
Conservation
Pareiorhaphis nudula is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 7 November 2018 as part of a broad Brazilian freshwater fish assessment coordinated by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The assessment reflects no identified major threats and a population resilience category of high (minimum doubling time under 15 months).
The species' range — four small coastal river systems in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul — falls within the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots in the world. Although no specific conservation concerns were identified at the time of assessment, the Atlantic Forest streams of southern Brazil face ongoing pressures from agricultural land use, eucalyptus and pine afforestation, and flow alteration. The species' dependence on clear, fast-flowing water with intact riparian cover makes it potentially sensitive to catchment disturbance, even if present population status appears stable.
