Pogonopoma wertheimeri is one of three species in a small genus of bearded, strongly built plecos from coastal rivers of Bahia and Espírito Santo in south-eastern Brazil. Known from rocky fast-water stretches of the Mucuri and São Mateus river systems, it is facultatively air-breathing, carries the unusual trait of a beard-like odontode cluster near the mouth, and remains almost entirely unknown in the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Pogonopoma wertheimeri was first described by Franz Steindachner in 1867, initially as a brief note in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien, Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe (volume 4, no. 14, page 119, for 16 May 1867), and then described in more detail with plates later that year in the Verhandlungen der Kaiserlich-Königlichen Zoologisch-Botanischen Gesellschaft in Wien (page 701, plate 1, figures 1–3). The type locality is Rio Mucuri District, Santa Clara, Bahia State, Brazil; holotype NMW 44288, Vienna Natural History Museum. The original combination was Plecostomus wertheimeri.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid name as Pogonopoma wertheimeri (Steindachner 1867), with parenthetical authority indicating transfer from Plecostomus. The genus Pogonopoma was erected to accommodate this species and its congeners within the subfamily Rhinelepinae. The subfamily Rhinelepinae is recognised by both the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase as a valid subfamily of Loricariidae; Quevedo & Reis (2002, Copeia 2002(2): 402–409) described the congeneric P. obscurum from the same region and revised the genus. Armbruster (1998, Copeia 1998(3): 620–636) provided a redescription of P. wertheimeri in his phylogenetic study of the Rhinelepis group.

The species epithet honours an individual named Wertheimer who accompanied the Thayer Expedition to Brazil (1865–1866), from which the type specimens were collected. FishBase notes that Steindachner did not clarify which of two Wertheimer individuals on that expedition the name was intended for (Eponym Dictionary of Fishes, ref. [128868]).

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 9 in standard length (SL), making this a moderately large pleco. The body is robust and cylindrical in cross-section, heavily armoured with bony scutes. Coloration as seen in aquarium photographs is dark olive-brown to grey-brown dorsally, often with faint darker mottling or spotting, and a paler underside. The overall appearance is cryptic and matches rocky stream substrates.

The genus name reflects one of the most distinctive features: Pogonopoma derives from the Greek for 'beard + operculum lid', referring to the cluster of bristle-like odontodes associated with the opercular and perioral region in males. These odontodes are hypertrophied and visible externally, giving the fish a distinctly 'bearded' appearance at maturity. Armbruster's (1998) redescription provides morphometric data and compares the three species of the genus.

The mouth is ventrally positioned and suctorial, with teeth adapted for rasping periphyton from hard substrates. PlanetCatfish close-up images of the mouth region illustrate the characteristic loricariid mouth morphology and the odontode development around the snout. Sexual dimorphism beyond the odontode development includes the broader body profile of gravid females when viewed dorsally.

Habitat

Pogonopoma wertheimeri is currently known from three coastal river drainages in south-eastern Brazil: the Rio Mucuri, the Rio São Mateus (both in Bahia and northern Espírito Santo states), and a third drainage mentioned in the Quevedo & Reis (2002) account of the genus. These are relatively short coastal rivers draining the Atlantic Forest escarpment, running generally east to northeast into the Atlantic.

The species is characteristically found in stretches of river with moderate to strong water current and rocky or sandy bottoms. PlanetCatfish notes that 'some specimens were collected from a lentic [still-water] habitat', indicating a degree of habitat flexibility, though the primary association is with lotic environments. FishBase confirms the species is facultatively air-breathing — a trait reported for the genus (ref. [126274]) — which is consistent with use of rapids microhabitats where surface access occurs naturally.

The climate of Bahia and Espírito Santo is warm subtropical to tropical, with a distinct dry season. Rivers in this region are warm, typically 72–82 °F at lower elevations, and can have markedly variable water levels seasonally. The Atlantic Forest drainages here tend toward soft, moderately acidic to neutral water, though specific water chemistry data for P. wertheimeri collection sites have not been published in detail.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study has been published for Pogonopoma wertheimeri. By morphology and habitat association, the species is a periphyton scraper and biofilm grazer: its ventral suctorial mouth, heavily keratinised lips, and typical loricariid teeth architecture are all consistent with rasping algae and associated organic material from rock surfaces in moderate to fast currents.

The Rhinelepinae subfamily to which Pogonopoma belongs includes genera (such as Rhinelepis) associated with algae-dominated rocky habitats. FishBase provides no dietary information specific to this species beyond the ecological context of demersal rheophile. Congener P. obscurum was described from similar habitat in the same region.

In the aquarium — where the species has been kept by a small number of hobbyists, as evidenced by the two 'spotter' records on PlanetCatfish — standard loricariid vegetarian fare is appropriate: algae wafers, spirulina, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), and sinking pellets. The facultative air-breathing capability of the genus suggests the fish can exploit hypoxic microhabitats and is robust in aquarium conditions with respect to oxygen levels, though good filtration and flow should still be maintained.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Pogonopoma wertheimeri has not been described in the published literature or in hobbyist documentation. No breeding reports exist on PlanetCatfish for this species.

The development of pronounced perioral odontodes in males (the 'beard' of the genus name) is consistent with a role in intersexual display or intrasexual competition for spawning sites, as seen in other loricariid genera with strong male odontode development. In genera such as Ancistrus, Panaque, and many others, such odontode development peaks during the breeding season and plays a direct role in territorial and courtship interactions.

Pogonopoma wertheimeri is a moderately large pleco, and males at full reproductive condition would be visually striking animals. The combination of strong current habitat, rocky substrate, and odontode morphology suggests pair formation may occur at or near defended crevice sites, with the male guarding access to a spawning cavity. These inferences are grounded in the broader loricariid literature and in general loricariid reproductive ecology, not in direct observations of this species.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Pogonopoma wertheimeri has been documented. PlanetCatfish records no breeding report, and the species does not appear in the hobbyist literature as a species that has been bred in aquaria.

The reproductive mode of Rhinelepinae members is not well-studied compared to more commonly kept loricariid subfamilies. By analogy with related genera in similar habitats, crevice- or cave-spawning is the most plausible mode, with adhesive eggs deposited in a sheltered substrate cavity and the male providing egg-guarding and aeration. Clutch size, incubation period, and post-hatching parental care duration are all unknown.

Successful captive breeding, should it be attempted, would likely require replicating the seasonal cycle of its native Bahia/Espírito Santo coastal rivers: a distinct dry-season rest period with reduced water level and slightly cooler temperatures, followed by rising water and warmer conditions simulating the wet-season flood pulse. Providing appropriate rocky cave structures in a spacious aquarium with strong flow would be the first prerequisite.

In the aquarium

Pogonopoma wertheimeri is not commercially available and has no assigned L-number or LDA-number. PlanetCatfish records only two individuals who have spotted this species in the wild or captivity — an indication of its extreme scarcity in the hobby. No wish-list entries are recorded either, reflecting lack of hobbyist awareness rather than disinterest.

The species has apparently been maintained by a small number of specialist keepers, likely in Brazil or Europe via specialist importers. At 9 in SL (total length probably 10–11 in), it is a medium-to-large pleco requiring a tank of at least 55 US gal for a single adult, with proportionally larger tanks for any attempt at breeding or group maintenance. Robust filtration, strong current, and high oxygenation are essential given the fast-water nature of its native habitat.

Water parameters for husbandry should reflect its coastal Atlantic Forest origin: temperature 72–79 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and soft water (low hardness, low conductivity). The facultative air-breathing capability of the genus means it can tolerate temporary reductions in dissolved oxygen, but this should not be used as an excuse for poor filtration. Rocky caves, smooth cobbles, and subdued lighting will allow the fish to display natural behaviour and reduce stress. Compatible tankmates should be similarly sized, non-aggressive fish that can tolerate moderate current: peaceful cichlids, larger characins, or loricariids of comparable size from different genera.

Conservation

Pogonopoma wertheimeri is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 7 November 2018, based on records from multiple coastal drainages in Bahia and Espírito Santo and an absence of evidence of major population decline.

However, the species' range — entirely within coastal Atlantic Forest drainages of south-eastern Brazil — places it within one of the world's most threatened biomes. The Atlantic Forest has been reduced to roughly 12–15% of its original extent, with the coastal drainages of Bahia and Espírito Santo subject to heavy deforestation, agricultural expansion, charcoal production, and urban growth. River systems in this region face ongoing sedimentation from deforestation, altered hydrology from water extraction, and pollution from domestic and agricultural sources.

The Mucuri and São Mateus basins are both entirely within the Atlantic Forest biome and have been identified as priority areas for conservation in Brazilian national biodiversity assessments. Pogonopoma wertheimeri shares these drainages with a number of other endemic freshwater fishes whose conservation status is poorly known. Continued monitoring of population trends in the native rivers, combined with protection of riparian forest in the basin, represents the most effective conservation measure for this and co-occurring endemic fauna.
