Taxonomy & naming
Blizzard and variegatus cactus pleco are trade names for L065, a hobby code from the DATZ L-number system. The code was given to a loricariid that could not be identified on import, so the fish has no authority, no type specimens and no scientific epithet. The registry lists it as Pseudacanthicus sp. "L 65" without any cf. or aff. comparison; PlanetCatfish files it as Pseudacanthicus sp. (L065). Other names in use are the German Variegatus-Kaktuswels and mustang cactus pleco. The bibliography cites the Welsatlas 2 (Seidel and Evers, 2005), the Miniatlas L-Welse (2005) and an article by Markus Kaluza in DATZ, February/March 2023, on black-and-white Pseudacanthicus cactus catfishes.
Morphology
The registry gives about 10 in total length. Diagnostic characters are not on record: the trade names Blizzard and Variegatus (Latin for variegated) hint at a mottled or patterned look, but no description of the markings is given. In shape it is a typical Pseudacanthicus, a suckermouth catfish armoured in bony plates bearing odontodes. Pseudacanthicus sp. L97, L273, L520 and L452 and Pseudacanthicus fordii are listed as similar catfishes.
Habitat
The registry's only locality for L065 is the Rio Manacapuru, in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. It places the river in the Amazon system and classes the water as blackwater. Habitat place, substrate, depth and current are not on record, and the temperature and pH figures are aquarium keeping ranges, so no field water chemistry is documented for the locality.
Feeding
What L065 eats in the Rio Manacapuru has not been published. The registry classes it as predominantly a carnivore that does not eat plants, so aquarium feeding follows suit: meaty sinking foods such as frozen mussel, prawn and bloodworm, backed up by sinking carnivore pellets. Varying the menu within that range is the usual approach with a bottom-dwelling plated catfish.
Mating
Sexing guidance is genus-level only. In Pseudacanthicus the male has a longer, broader head, is often more attractively coloured and often has a larger dorsal fin. Cave spawning is typical of the genus, the male defending the cave and later guarding eggs and larvae; courtship and spawning specific to L065 are not described.
Breeding
L065 has been bred repeatedly in aquaria, according to the registry, which gives no further detail. Clutch size, incubation time and fry development are not on record. As in related Pseudacanthicus, spawning is expected in a cave, with the male guarding the eggs and larvae, but that is a genus-typical pattern and not a documented account of this form.
In the aquarium
The registry recommends a tank at least 59 in long for L065, with a keeping range of 77–84 °F and pH 5–7; both are aquarium guidance, not field data. Small groups are recommended, though a single fish is possible. A plated carnivore wants clean, well-oxygenated water with current and plenty of rock or wood caves. Territorial behaviour toward other plecos is common.
Conservation
The wild status of L065 is unknown. It is Not Evaluated by the IUCN Red List, since an undescribed form cannot be assessed until it has a name. According to the registry, Brazil's 2012 positive list of species cleared for ornamental export does not include it, and neither does the 2020 negative list. Collection for the trade and river engineering are general pressures on some L-number habitats.
