Melanotaenia sp. "Running River" is an undescribed rainbowfish that Dan's Fish lists from Running River in North Queensland. The seller says it nearly went extinct in the wild and was rescued through the efforts of Dr. Peter Unmack and colleagues.

Taxonomy & naming

Dan's Fish sells this fish as Melanotaenia sp. "Running River". This is an undescribed form: its identity and range are not documented in the atlas's sources. The trade name is a collection locality.

Morphology

Dan's Fish gives the maximum size as unknown and suggests 4–5 inches (4–5 in). It describes rainbowfish generally as peaceful and active, with males flashing a bright iridescent stripe.

Habitat

Dan's Fish lists the natural range as Running River, North Queensland, Australia. Melanotaenia are rainbowfish of New Guinea and northern Australia (genus-level).

The seller reports that the wild population nearly disappeared and has since appeared to recover. The form has no IUCN assessment known to the atlas.
