Paratrygon munduruku is a freshwater stingray described in 2026 from the middle Tapajós River in Brazil, one of four new Paratrygon species named together from the clear rivers draining the Brazilian Crystalline Shield into the Amazon basin. A cartilaginous fish in family Potamotrygonidae, it shares its family's venomous tail spine and viviparous, matrotrophic reproduction with sharks and marine rays rather than with any bony fish. Its dark, densely vermiculated coloration sets it apart from its four newly described relatives, and its species name honors the Munduruku, the Indigenous people of the Tapajós who have lived along the river for generations — a naming choice the describing author made explicit in the paper itself.

Taxonomy & naming

Paratrygon munduruku was described by Loboda in 2026, in the same Neotropical Ichthyology paper that simultaneously named three sibling species from the Tocantins, Araguaia and Xingu rivers, raising the genus Paratrygon from three previously recognized species to seven. It is placed in family Potamotrygonidae, subfamily Potamotrygoninae, order Myliobatiformes.

The holotype, MZUSP 103916, is a juvenile female of 12.4 in disc width, collected from the rio Tapajós at the District of Pimental, Municipality of Itaituba, Pará State, Brazil (04°36'29"S, 56°16'22"W) in October 2005; paratypes include a considerably larger specimen (INPA 6884, 14.41 in disc width) collected in the same district in 1991. Earlier molecular studies (Frederico et al., 2012; Fontenelle et al., 2021) had already identified this Tapajós-basin lineage as distinct from typical P. aiereba; the 2026 description formalizes it on coloration, spiracle shape, dermal-denticle morphology and skeletal characters, most notably an unusually arched and stout propterygium. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name used here. The species epithet honors the Munduruku, an Indigenous people of the Tupi language family who live along stretches of the Tapajós River in the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Pará and Mato Grosso — the paper states this explicitly as the reason for the name.

Morphology

Specimens of Paratrygon munduruku examined in the description range roughly 7.48–14.41 in disc width, all juveniles; the holotype female measured 12.4 in. The disc is subcircular, averaging about 110% of its width in length, with only a slightly concave anterior margin.

The dorsal disc is brown with numerous small dark brown spots in axon or thread-like (vermiculated) patterns spread across the disc — described in the diagnosis as inconspicuous and lacking any pale, whitish spotting, which separates P. munduruku from P. araguaia (which has distinct pale rounded spots) and from P. lucindai (large rounded dark spots on a paler ground). The spiracles are small and quadrangular, only slightly larger than the eyes (mean 4.6% disc width), with a small, rounded spiracular process. Distinctively among Paratrygon, the propterygium — one of the paired cartilages supporting the pectoral fin — is arched and notably thick-bodied toward its rear, a character used to separate this species from its closest relatives. As in the rest of the genus, a venomous, serrated spine sits near the base of the long tail; in P. munduruku the sting is comparatively short.

Habitat

Paratrygon munduruku is so far known only from the middle portion of the rio Tapajós, in Pará State, Brazil, though the describing authors expect it also occurs more widely through the river's main tributaries, in keeping with the pattern shown by its clear-water congeners. The Tapajós is one of the Amazon basin's principal clear-water rivers, rising from the weathered Precambrian soils of the Brazilian Crystalline Shield; such rivers run relatively transparent, olive-green in color, slightly acidic (roughly pH 6.0–6.8) and carry very low sediment and mineral loads — the Tapajós itself measures a conductivity of only about 14 μS/cm.

This sets the river sharply apart, chemically, from the muddy, whitewater channels of the central Solimões-Amazonas system inhabited by the widespread P. aiereba, and the authors propose that this basin-scale contrast in water chemistry between clear-water and white-water systems may itself have driven diversification across the genus. Like the rest of its family, P. munduruku is a benthic species that breathes through the spiracles atop its head while resting on the riverbed.

Feeding

No dietary data specific to Paratrygon munduruku has been published; its 2026 description is a taxonomic and morphological revision of preserved museum specimens, not a feeding or field study. What can be said draws on the biology shared across Potamotrygonidae: these are benthic ambush predators that detect buried or hidden prey using the ampullae of Lorenzini, an electro-sensory system concentrated on the underside of the disc.

Across the family the diet is centered on aquatic insect larvae, crustaceans, molluscs and worms, supplemented opportunistically with small fishes, with prey pinned beneath the disc and moved to the crushing tooth plates in the ventral mouth. No feeding observations exist for P. munduruku beyond this general family pattern.

Mating

As in all elasmobranchs, fertilization in Paratrygon munduruku is internal: a male grips a female's disc, typically biting at the margin, and inserts one of his paired claspers to transfer sperm. No mating behaviour specific to this species has been observed or published — the 2026 description is based entirely on preserved juvenile specimens.

Because this reproductive mode is uniform across Potamotrygonidae, it can be attributed to P. munduruku with confidence even in the absence of direct observation, though courtship details for this particular species remain undocumented.

Breeding

Paratrygon munduruku is presumed viviparous, following the pattern of its whole family, with developing pups nourished after the yolk is exhausted through matrotrophic histotrophy — a nutrient-rich uterine secretion the embryos take up directly. This is documented broadly across Potamotrygonidae; because the known material of P. munduruku consists entirely of juveniles, no litter size, gestation length or other adult reproductive data have been recorded for this species.

The largest specimen so far documented, a paratype of 14.41 in disc width collected in 1991, is still described only as a juvenile in the original diagnosis, underscoring how little is known of the adult form and reproductive biology of this recently recognized species.

In the aquarium

Paratrygon munduruku has no history in the aquarium trade — it was described only in 2026, entirely from preserved juvenile museum material. More broadly, Paratrygon is a genus of very large "discus rays" whose known species reach adult disc widths of 19.7–39.4 in or more, a scale that places the genus beyond any home aquarium and into the domain of large public displays and dedicated research collections — a statement true of the genus generally, since the adult size of P. munduruku itself has not yet been documented.

Should specimens ever reach trade, husbandry demands would be severe: many square metres of floor space, a deep bed of soft sand, warm and precisely maintained water chemistry, and strict avoidance of copper-based medications, with the venomous tail spine a genuine hazard. Given the species' apparent single-river endemism and very recent description, there is no responsible case for aquarium collection.

Conservation

Paratrygon munduruku has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; as a species named in 2026 it currently carries no Red List status. The describing authors, applying IUCN criteria informally in their taxonomic paper, suggested a category of Data Deficient, noting that the species is so far documented only from the middle Tapajós and that its full area of occupancy and any potential threats cannot yet be properly assessed without more distributional data. This is the describing authors' own proposed assessment, not an official Red List determination.

The authors flagged the four newly described clear-water Paratrygon species collectively, including P. munduruku, as possibly the most vulnerable in the genus, given their endemism to single river systems in a region under considerable anthropogenic pressure. Basic survey work across the wider Tapajós drainage — to establish whether the species occurs more broadly than currently documented, and what threats it may face — is the clear priority for this recently described, still juvenile-only-known ray.
