Chilochromis duponti is the sole species of its genus, a thick-lipped, algae-rasping cichlid of the warm coastal rivers that drain the western edge of Central Africa between Gabon and the Congo mouth. Its specialised feeding apparatus — a protruding snout, an inferior mouth crowded with many rows of fine, comb-like teeth, and a broad fleshy upper lip pressed against the substrate — marks it as one of the chromidotilapiine cichlids that scrape the film of algae and microscopic life (aufwuchs) coating submerged rocks and wood. Described by George Albert Boulenger in 1902 and almost unknown in the aquarium hobby, it remains one of the more obscure members of the African cichlid radiation.

Taxonomy & naming

Chilochromis duponti was described by the Belgian-born British zoologist George Albert Boulenger in 1902, in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, and Boulenger erected the new genus Chilochromis to receive it in the same work. The description rested on a single specimen — the unique holotype, IRSNB 7, held at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels and later catalogued by Walschaerts (1987) — collected from the Lukula River, a tributary within the Congo (Zaire) drainage of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The genus has been monotypic ever since: more than a century of African cichlid systematics has never added a second species to it, and duponti stands alone. A point of long-standing confusion is that Chilochromis Boulenger 1902 is an entirely different genus from the superficially similar-looking name Cheilochromis Eccles & Trewavas 1989, a Lake Malawi haplochromine; the two are unrelated and the Catalog of Fishes flags the distinction explicitly. Chilochromis is placed in the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, the great assemblage of African cichlids, and is generally regarded as a chromidotilapiine — part of the loose grouping of West and Central African substrate-brooding cichlids that includes Chromidotilapia, Pelvicachromis and their allies. Its validity has been upheld in every modern regional treatment, from Snoeks & Teugels (1991) and Poll & Gosse (1995) through Stiassny and colleagues' Lower Guinea fish survey (2007) and the annotated checklist of the fishes of Gabon (Fermon et al. 2022).

Morphology

Chilochromis duponti reaches about 8.5 in in standard length, making it a medium-large riverine cichlid rather than a dwarf. The body is a fairly typical elongate, benthopelagic cichlid form, but the head bears the genus's defining specialisations. The snout is markedly protuberant and overhangs an inferior (downward-facing, sub-terminal) mouth, an arrangement built for working against a flat substrate. The most distinctive feature gives the genus its name: a broad, thick upper lip set off by a pronounced lip crease, the fleshy rami of the lower jaw being connected to the upper jaw by what Boulenger described as a broad, thin lip. Both oral jaws carry numerous rows of extremely fine, comb-like, spatulate teeth — a dentition suited to combing and rasping rather than grasping or crushing. The dorsal fin is long-based with 16 to 18 spines, the anal fin with 3 spines and 5 to 9 soft rays, the high spine count being typical of the long-dorsal-finned African riverine cichlids. Sexual dimorphism in this species is poorly documented in the literature; as in many chromidotilapiine cichlids, mature males are expected to grow somewhat larger and develop slightly more produced fins than females, but no detailed published account quantifies the difference, so any specific claim should be treated with caution.

Habitat

The species is a Lower Guinea / lower Congo endemic of the coastal river basins of west-central Africa, occurring in freshwater only. Its documented range spans the Chiloango basin (which crosses Cabinda Province of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo), the Kouilou-Niari and lower Loeme rivers in the Republic of the Congo, and the Nyanga basin together with the upper Ngounie River of the Ogooue (Ogowe) system in Gabon. The type locality, the Lukula River, lies in the Congo drainage of the DR Congo. In ecoregion terms this places the fish across the Southern Lower Guinea (Ogowe-Nyanga-Kouilou-Niari) and Lower Congo freshwater ecoregions, a region whose watercourses were historically connected to the lower Congo system and which share much of their fauna with it. These are warm equatorial-to-tropical rivers — the range sits between roughly the equator and 8 degrees south — and the fish is described as benthopelagic, living in association with the bottom but ranging into the water column above it. Like other thick-lipped algae-grazers it would be expected over firm substrates of rock and submerged wood where a grazeable film of aufwuchs develops, in the soft, warm, weakly mineralised waters characteristic of these forested coastal basins. FishBase carries no published depth range for the species, and no in-situ chemistry has been formally tabulated; the temperature and pH envelope given here is inferred from the general character of these equatorial Lower Guinea rivers rather than from species-specific field measurements. The annotated Gabon checklist notes that a Chilochromis duponti-like cichlid collected in the Ogooue system north of Ndjole has yet to be confirmed as the same species, a hint that the genus may hold undescribed diversity.

Feeding

Chilochromis duponti is a specialised herbivore-detritivore that feeds primarily on aquatic vegetation, mostly algae, taking only minor quantities of small insects alongside it. Its trophic level is estimated at about 2.6, low on the food web and consistent with a diet dominated by plant and microbial material rather than animal prey. The whole head is an apparatus for this trophic guild: the protruding snout positions the inferior mouth flat against rock or wood, the broad thick lip seals the contact, and the many rows of fine, comb-like, spatulate teeth comb and scrape the attached film of algae, diatoms, and the associated micro-invertebrates and detritus that together make up aufwuchs. This is the same broad strategy pursued by the algae-rasping rock-dwellers of the Great Lakes, but arrived at independently within a West/Central African riverine lineage. In its home rivers the species functions as a grazer of the periphyton coating hard surfaces, converting that low-grade but abundant resource into fish biomass and helping to keep the algal turf cropped.

Mating

The reproductive behaviour of Chilochromis duponti has not been described in any detail in the scientific literature, and the species is too rare in captivity for a reliable body of aquarist observation to have accumulated. What can be said is framed by what it is: a substrate-spawning chromidotilapiine cichlid reported to be aggressive in confinement. In that broad group, pair formation typically precedes spawning, with one or both partners defending a chosen site, and courtship centres on a cleaned spawning surface rather than on the lek-style displays of the mouthbrooding lake cichlids. Beyond this general expectation, the specifics of how Chilochromis pairs form, court, and hold territory remain undocumented, and no published account should be cited for them.

Breeding

Chilochromis duponti is reported as a typical substratum (substrate) spawner — that is, it lays its eggs on a solid surface such as a rock or a cave wall rather than incubating them in the mouth. Beyond this basic mode, its breeding biology is essentially unrecorded: there is no published clutch-size count for the species, no description of its eggs or fry, and no account of which parent guards the brood or for how long. Among substrate-brooding chromidotilapiine cichlids of comparable size, a clutch on the order of tens to a couple of hundred adhesive eggs guarded by the parents would be typical, and biparental or female-led guarding of eggs and wrigglers is the norm in the group — but these are genus-typical expectations, not measured figures for duponti, and they are offered only as context. FishBase's resilience estimate (medium, with a minimum population-doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years, assuming a fecundity below 1,000 eggs) is consistent with a moderately fecund substrate spawner rather than a highly productive broadcast breeder. The honest summary is that the breeding of this fish has not been documented in the wild or, in any detailed way, in the aquarium.

In the aquarium

Chilochromis duponti is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is very rarely collected for the trade, almost never offered for sale, and there is no established body of husbandry experience to draw on — anyone keeping it is working largely without a roadmap, and this section is therefore framed as informed inference rather than tested protocol.

What is on record is that the species is described as aggressive in captivity, which is the single most important planning constraint. A medium-large, territorial, thick-lipped grazer of this kind would need a long, spacious tank with a footprint measured in feet rather than inches, broken up with rockwork and driftwood into multiple defendable sightline-breaks so that subordinate fish and potential mates can escape a dominant individual. Water should mirror the warm, soft, weakly mineralised coastal rivers it comes from: a temperature in the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius and a near-neutral, slightly acidic-to-neutral pH (broadly pH 6.0 to 7.5) are reasonable targets, kept clean and well oxygenated with strong filtration, since these are fish of flowing rather than stagnant water.

Feeding should respect its herbivore-detritivore biology. A diet built around algae and vegetable matter — spirulina-based and other vegetable flake or pellet, blanched greens, and the natural aufwuchs it will graze from rocks and wood — with only modest amounts of animal food, suits its low trophic level far better than a meat-heavy regime, which can cause digestive problems in dedicated algae-grazers. The most realistic statement about this species in the hobby is simply that it is seldom kept, its requirements are extrapolated rather than proven, and it is not a fish to recommend to anyone but a specialist with space to spare and an interest in obscure West African riverine cichlids.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Chilochromis duponti as Least Concern (assessed 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants), with the population trend recorded as unknown. The Least Concern category reflects the species' relatively wide distribution across several independent coastal basins — the Chiloango, Kouilou-Niari and lower Loeme, and the Nyanga and upper Ngounie — rather than any documented abundance, since the fish is poorly studied. No species-specific threats are listed, and it carries no CITES listing. The broader context is the IUCN's regional assessment of central-African freshwater biodiversity, which identifies habitat degradation from deforestation, sedimentation, pollution, and the expansion of mining and infrastructure as the pervasive pressures on the rivers of the Lower Guinea and lower Congo region. As a habitat grazer spread across multiple basins, Chilochromis duponti is less exposed than the many narrow-range endemics of these drainages, but its low profile means that any localised decline could go unnoticed; the unresolved record of a possibly distinct Chilochromis-like form in the Ogooue underlines how thinly the genus is actually known.
