Taxonomy & naming
Benitochromis nigrodorsalis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Anton Lamboj in 2001, in a revision of what was then called the Chromidotilapia batesii/finleyi complex (Verhandlungen der Gesellschaft für Ichthyologie 2: 11–47). In that paper Lamboj erected the new genus Benitochromis to hold a cluster of West African cichlids previously lumped under Chromidotilapia, and described three new species within it, nigrodorsalis among them. The holotype (MRAC 99-31-P-13) is held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium, with paratypes split between the MRAC and the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NMW 94516); the type locality is in Cameroon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and FishBase both treat the name as valid, and Stiassny and colleagues retained it in their 2007 survey of the fresh and brackish-water fishes of Lower Guinea. The genus belongs to the tribe Chromidotilapiini within the African cichlid subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae, and currently contains six species — finleyi, batesii, conjunctus, nigrodorsalis, ufermanni and riomuniensis — with the likelihood, noted by several workers, that further undescribed forms remain in the trade. In the aquarium hobby the fish circulated for years under the provisional trade labels "Chromidotilapia finleyi Moliwe" or "finleyi Meloue" before Lamboj's revision gave it a formal name; these are historical aliases, not common names, and the species is otherwise known simply by its binomial.
Morphology
This is a modest, riverine cichlid rather than a showpiece. The maximum size in the original description is 3 in standard length (the type material measured by Lamboj), although aquarium accounts routinely cite larger fish — Practical Fishkeeping, for instance, gives roughly 4–4.5 in in total length for imported adults, a figure that folds in the tail and reflects well-fed captive specimens rather than wild ones. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the meristics typical of the genus: about 15–16 dorsal spines and 9–10 soft rays, three anal spines and eight anal soft rays. The diagnostic feature, and the source of the name, is a dense black band of pigment running through the membrane of the dorsal fin. The ground colour is pale — silvery to fawn — and ripe or displaying fish flush a striking rose-pink to red across the lower body and belly, a flush that intensifies in spawning condition. Sexual dimorphism is present but subtle, as it is across the genus: males grow somewhat larger and develop more produced, pointed dorsal and anal fin tips, while females tend to be rounder-bodied and show the breeding flush strongly; this is a pair-bonding fish in which the sexes are not dramatically divergent, and reliable sexing often comes down to fin shape and behaviour rather than a single bold marker.
Habitat
Benitochromis nigrodorsalis is a Lower Guinea endemic with a genuinely small range. It is recorded from just two areas of coastal western Cameroon — around Moliwe, on the lower flanks of Mount Cameroon, and near Douala — together with the island of Fernando Poo (Bioko), about 19 mi offshore in Equatorial Guinea. There it lives in small to medium coastal rivers, creeks and rainforest streams, extending to the fringes and inlets of swamp-forest; collectors associate its watercourses with the ironwood tree Lophira alata. These are soft, slightly acidic to neutral forest waters: FishBase gives a pH range of about 6.0–7.0 and a hardness of roughly 3–10 dH, with water temperatures around 70–79 °F — distinctly cooler than the equatorial-lake cichlids many hobbyists expect. As a benthopelagic stream fish it occupies the shallow water column over the bed rather than any deep zone; no formal depth band has been published beyond FishBase's open-ended "0 ft and below," so the depth recorded here is the shallow stream-and-creek habitat documented for it (on the order of 0–7 ft) rather than a measured maximum, and should be read as habitat-typical, not a hard limit.
Feeding
Diet in the wild has not been studied in detail, and the published picture is correspondingly thin. FishBase places the species at a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with a small invertivore rather than a herbivore or piscivore, and hobby accounts infer a diet of aquatic insect larvae and small crustaceans foraged from the stream bed and leaf litter — the staple fare of a chromidotilapiine working the bottom of a shaded forest creek. In captivity it is unfussy and accepts the usual range of prepared and frozen foods, taking flakes, pellets, and frozen invertebrate foods readily once settled. In its native community it functions as a small benthic predator of invertebrates, one of several Lower Guinea cichlids partitioning the same shaded, soft-water streams.
Mating
Benitochromis nigrodorsalis forms monogamous pairs, and the pair bond is the organising unit of its social life. Away from breeding the species is not especially aggressive toward other fishes, but a bonded pair turns markedly territorial and can be sharply intolerant of conspecifics — keepers consistently report that the worst aggression is directed at their own kind rather than at tankmates, which makes housing more than one pair in a modest tank difficult. Pair formation and courtship precede a substrate spawning: rather than excavating a cave, the pair cleans an open, firm surface and the female deposits her eggs there in the open. This pre-spawning behaviour — open-substrate cleaning and pairing rather than cave preparation — distinguishes nigrodorsalis from its congener Benitochromis batesii, which spawns in caves and is a larvophilic (larva-picking) mouthbrooder; the two represent different points on the chromidotilapiine spectrum between substrate-guarding and full mouthbrooding.
Breeding
The breeding biology is the genuinely remarkable part of this fish, and it is well documented because the species spawns readily in aquaria. Benitochromis nigrodorsalis is a pair-bonding, biparental, ovophilic (egg-picking) mouthbrooder with delayed uptake: the eggs are first laid on an open substrate and left there for a period, and only then taken into the mouth — a transitional strategy between substrate-spawning and the immediate egg-uptake mouthbrooding of the rift-lake cichlids. What sets it apart is that both parents brood. According to Lamboj's accounts, the male and female take turns carrying the eggs and larvae and transfer the entire clutch from mouth to mouth several times a day: the two fish face each other head-on, the holding parent jerks its head and works its pectoral fins, and propels the clutch into the partner's mouth. Inexperienced pairs can take hours to complete a hand-off; practised pairs do it in seconds. After the young become free-swimming — roughly a fortnight from spawning — both parents guard the school for around two months, frequently taking the fry back into the mouth at night or when threatened. Clutch sizes are not precisely published for the species; consistent with a small chromidotilapiine they are modest, on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a hundred eggs (a genus-typical estimate, flagged as such rather than a counted figure for nigrodorsalis). This shared, mouth-to-mouth brooding makes it one of the more extraordinary cichlids to watch reproduce, and is the main reason a small, plain-coloured forest fish has any following at all in the hobby.
In the aquarium
Benitochromis nigrodorsalis is uncommon in the hobby — it surfaces in specialist West African cichlid circles and occasionally through importers such as Aquarium Glaser, but it is rarely found in general trade. That scarcity means most keepers who seek it out already have some grounding in soft-water African cichlids, which is appropriate, because the species is not a beginner fish. Its chief demand is water quality: this is a fish from clear, oxygen-rich coastal forest streams, and it is intolerant of the elevated nitrate levels that a lightly maintained or overstocked tank accumulates. Frequent partial water changes — on the order of 25–30 percent weekly — and a canister or sump-style filter are strongly recommended. Matching the chemistry of its wild habitat matters: soft water (ideally below 10 °dH total hardness) and a pH held between 6.0 and 7.0 are the target range drawn directly from FishBase records for its Cameroonian rivers. Temperature should sit in the 72–77 °F band; the species comes from the slopes of Mount Cameroon, where water runs somewhat cooler than the equatorial average, and persistently warm water above 81 °F is a stressor.
Tank size should be generous relative to the fish's body length. A single pair can be housed in a 90-litre (approximately 90 × 15.5 in footprint) aquarium, but 30 US gal or more gives a meaningful buffer during the territorial flare-ups that accompany spawning. Substrate and decor should evoke a rainforest stream bottom: a layer of fine dark sand or gravel, scattered smooth stones and pebbles, and — importantly — a thick covering of dried leaf litter (Indian almond or beech leaves work well) that both mimics the species' natural leaf-litter habitat and contributes mild tannins to soften and slightly acidify the water. Broadleaf plants such as Anubias or Bolbitis, attached to driftwood, are appropriate and tolerate the lower light levels this fish prefers. Bright open spaces and hard, sterile decor seem to increase shyness and stress; aim for a tank that feels enclosed and shaded rather than exposed.
Benitochromis nigrodorsalis is not a community fish in the conventional sense. A bonded pair becomes sharply territorial — aggression is directed most intensely at conspecifics, making it impractical to house two pairs in any but a large tank with a solid visual barrier between territories. Robust, similarly sized West African fish that occupy the upper water column — certain Phenacogrammus tetras or other mid-water African characins — can work as dithers and seem to reduce skittishness in the cichlids; bottom-dwelling catfishes of the Synodontis genus are frequently used as mid-level companions in West African set-ups. Avoid slow-moving, long-finned fish (guppies, angelfish) and any species that would be harassed by a territorial pair during breeding. Docile rift-lake cichlids are a poor match both behaviourally and in their need for hard, alkaline water.
Feeding is uncomplicated once the fish have settled. Live and frozen invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia, mosquito larvae, small chironomid worms — are eagerly taken and replicate the benthic invertivore diet documented from the wild; high-quality sinking pellets and crushed flake are accepted as a staple. A varied diet with regular live or frozen food appears to support good colour and conditioning toward breeding.
The biparental mouthbrooding behaviour described in the Breeding section makes this species particularly rewarding for keepers prepared to observe it carefully, but it also introduces a common failure mode: inexperienced pairs frequently drop or eat the first few clutches, and keeper accounts on Cichlid-Forum and Apistogramma.com emphasise patience — sequential spawns over several weeks are normal before a pair broods a clutch to the free-swimming stage. Separating the pair from other tank inhabitants before and during spawning reduces disturbance. Because this is an Endangered species with a very limited wild range in coastal Cameroon — habitats under documented pressure from oil-palm agriculture — maintaining healthy captive populations and passing fish into the hands of other dedicated keepers is a genuine contribution; the CARES Preservation Program recognises species at this threat level for exactly this reason.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Benitochromis nigrodorsalis as Endangered (EN B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii)), assessed on 16 February 2009 by T. Moelants and published in 2010, with the population trend listed as unknown. The category is driven entirely by the species' tiny range — known from only two Cameroonian localities plus Bioko, its extent of occurrence and area of occupancy both fall within Endangered thresholds — rather than by any documented population crash. No threat was considered acute at the time of assessment, but the assessors flagged commercial agriculture as the principal pressure: nearly the entire Moliwe River, one of its two mainland strongholds, runs through an oil-palm plantation, exposing the fish to the deforestation, runoff and habitat alteration that intensive plantation farming brings. Field observers have additionally noted localised deforestation and charcoal production around its streams. The Red List entry is itself flagged as needing updating, so the figure is best read as a now-dated snapshot of a narrow-range Lower Guinea endemic whose fate is tied to a handful of small coastal watercourses on the flanks of Mount Cameroon — habitats with no protected status and under steady agricultural conversion. Maintaining captive populations through programmes such as the hobby's CARES preservation effort is one of the few buffers against the loss of so geographically restricted a species.
