The Ndumbi Rocks population

Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma" "Ndumbi Rocks" is the Ndumbi Rocks population of Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma", a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the central part of the lake. It is the same species as Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma", distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma" is an undescribed mbuna cichlid from the Likoma Island archipelago in the eastern-central part of Lake Malawi, recorded at Maingano Island and Ndumbi Rocks. It has no formal scientific name. The trade tag layers three pieces of field shorthand together: a barred, "zebra"-type colour pattern, a reputation for combative territorial behaviour that exceeds the mbuna norm, and the Likoma locality that distinguishes it from similarly patterned, similarly pugnacious forms elsewhere in the lake. It belongs to Chindongo, the genus of small rock-dwelling algae grazers that Ad Konings split from Pseudotropheus in 2016, and it is one of several barred locality forms in that group still awaiting formal description.
