Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma" is not a formally described species. It has no describing author, no publication year, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The name follows the standard convention for undescribed Lake Malawi cichlids — genus Chindongo, the qualifier "sp." marking its undescribed status, and a compound trade name in quotes combining a colour pattern ("Zebra"), a behavioural note ("Aggressive"), and a locality ("Likoma"). It is recognised through field and aquarium literature, chiefly the work of Ad Konings, who erected Chindongo in 2016 for a cluster of rock-dwelling species previously placed in Pseudotropheus and Metriaclima. "Zebra" trade names are common across several genera of barred Lake Malawi mbuna, so the Likoma locality tag is the operative distinguishing feature here rather than the pattern alone, which is shared, in general form, by many unrelated species. Until formally described, no authority or date should be attached to it.
Morphology
This is a small to medium mbuna on the standard Chindongo body plan: laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied, with the blunt head and comb-like teeth of a rock algae grazer. Genus-typical size runs roughly 3–4 in total length. As its name indicates, the base pattern is barred — a series of dark vertical bands crossing a paler ground colour, the "zebra" motif shared broadly across Lake Malawi's barred mbuna lineages, though the precise tone and bar count of this Likoma population have not been formally documented. Males are expected to intensify this barring and to carry the egg-spot markings on the anal fin typical of the genus. As with other undescribed Chindongo, no published character separates this form from other barred populations; identification rests on the Likoma-area collection locality together with the well-noted male aggression from which half the trade name derives.
Habitat
Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma" is documented from Maingano Island and Ndumbi Rocks, both close to Likoma Island in the eastern-central section of Lake Malawi — an area with a long history of yielding distinct, tightly localised mbuna forms, in part because of Likoma's relative isolation from the mainland shore. Its habitat is the standard mbuna biotope: steep boulder and rock faces dropping into clear water, providing the caves and crevices rock cichlids depend on for shelter and territory. Water conditions follow the lake-wide norm — warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Its range beyond the two documented sites near Likoma is not established, and it should be treated as a tightly locality-restricted population pending further field survey.
Feeding
This form is expected to feed as other Chindongo do, grazing the algal mat, or Aufwuchs, that coats sunlit rock in the shallow-to-mid zone. Its comb-like teeth rasp filamentous algae, diatoms, and the small invertebrates living within that mat directly off the rock surface, in short, repeated bouts interspersed with territorial defence of the feeding patch. No feeding study specific to this Likoma population has been published; this account follows the well-documented pattern for the genus rather than direct observation of this particular form.
Mating
Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma" is expected to follow the standard polygynous, lek-like mbuna system, with no pair bond. Males hold small rock or crevice territories and display from them to attract passing females, driving off rival males and other intruders with the pronounced combativeness the trade name flags. Females visit and select among displaying males before spawning at a chosen site. No courtship study specific to this population has been published; this account is inferred from the well-documented mating system shared across Chindongo and the wider mbuna assemblage, together with the field-noted aggression that gives the form half its name.
Breeding
Like all Chindongo, this form is a maternal mouthbrooder. Following courtship and spawning, the female takes the eggs into her mouth; contact with the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin as she attempts to gather what appear to be further eggs triggers fertilisation of the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during that period, before releasing independent, free-swimming fry. There is no paternal or biparental care beyond this. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific form but is expected to be modest, in line with similarly sized Chindongo — likely a few dozen eggs per spawn.
In the aquarium
Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma" reaches the trade as a barred locality mbuna whose name is, again, a fair warning rather than marketing. A heavily rockworked tank with abundant caves and broken sightlines is essential to disperse aggression and give subordinate fish somewhere to retreat.
A footprint of at least 47 in is a sensible minimum, stocked as one male with several females to spread territorial pressure rather than as a single pair. Tankmates should be chosen among robust, similarly rock-oriented mbuna; slower or more passive species are likely to be bullied. Water should mirror Lake Malawi's chemistry: warm, hard, and alkaline, with pH on the high side of neutral, and regular partial water changes to control nitrate. Diet should be vegetable-forward — a quality spirulina-based flake or pellet as staple, with occasional blanched greens — since fatty, high-protein diets predispose mbuna to bloat and other digestive problems. As with any tightly localised colour form, keepers wishing to preserve the Likoma-population identity should avoid crossing it with other zebra-patterned Chindongo forms.
Conservation
Chindongo sp. "Aggressive Zebra Likoma" has not been evaluated by the IUCN. As an undescribed form with no published scientific name, it carries no Red List status of any kind — an absence that reflects its taxonomic situation, not a statement about population safety. As a form restricted to a small area near Likoma Island, it is exposed to the general pressures on Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlids: ornamental collection, localised habitat disturbance, and sediment inputs. Tightly localised endemics of this kind are, in general, more vulnerable to local disturbance than wide-ranging species simply because their entire known population occupies a small area, though no assessment specific to this form exists. It should be described honestly as unassessed rather than assigned any inferred status.
