The Narungu population
Gephyrochromis moorii "Narungu" is the Narungu population of Gephyrochromis moorii, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the south-central part of the lake. It is the same species as Gephyrochromis moorii, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Gephyrochromis moorii is a small, sand-dwelling mbuna endemic to Lake Malawi and the type species of its genus, placed by George Boulenger in 1901 on material collected by the British biologist J. E. S. Moore — who gave the fish its name — during expeditions to the African Great Lakes. It lives exclusively over open sand in groups of three to seven, combing loose sediment and periphyton with its distinctive comb-like teeth, a feeding style that sets it apart from the rock-grazing majority of the mbuna. Quiet and rarely encountered in the hobby, it rewards keepers willing to replicate its open sandy world.
