Taxonomy & naming

Gephyrochromis moorii was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1901, in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 7, vol. 7), from a single specimen collected by the British cytologist and zoologist John Edmund Sharrock Moore during his Great Lakes expeditions. In the same paper Boulenger erected the genus Gephyrochromis, making Gephyrochromis moorii its type species — a status it has held ever since. The original publication listed the type locality as 'North end of Lake Tanganyika', an error corrected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1946 to Lake Malawi (then 'Lake Nyasa'). The holotype is held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1906.9.6.121, now catalogued NHMUK ZOO 1906.9.6.121). A second synonym, Christyella nyasana Trewavas 1935, was sunk into Gephyrochromis moorii by Trewavas in the same 1946 correction. The genus currently contains two species: Gephyrochromis moorii and Gephyrochromis lawsi Fryer 1957, with Gephyrochromis sp. 'patricki' tentatively assigned by Konings (2016 edition) pending formal description. The genus is placed within the haplochromine mbuna of Lake Malawi — cichlids that, unlike most haplochromines, forage over sand rather than rock and carry the distinctive comb teeth (flattened, bicuspid outer row that transitions to unicuspid in adults; tricuspid inner rows) that characterise the genus. The original description appeared in Boulenger's paper 'Diagnoses of new fishes discovered by Mr J. E. S. Moore in lakes Tanganyika and Kivu' — Moore's collecting work in the region also honoured him in the epithet. No trade common name has become established; the species is sold and discussed by its scientific name, though Konings records that local Malawian fishermen call it 'Sergeant,' for reasons he could not determine. The species was first exported from the lake in the late 1970s but never caught on with hobbyists, a fact Konings attributes to the difficulty of collecting a fish that lives at such depth.

Morphology

Gephyrochromis moorii is a small, moderately elongate cichlid reaching a maximum recorded total length of 4.5 in (FishBase, citing Maréchal 1991). In practice most wild fish are somewhat smaller and aquarium specimens rarely exceed 4–4.5 in. The body is laterally compressed and the head is relatively small with a terminal, slightly protrusible mouth. The dentition is the diagnostic feature of the genus: the outer row of teeth on both jaws consists of laterally flattened, bicuspid teeth with expanded, comb-like crowns suited for scraping and scooping periphyton and loosely consolidated material from the substrate — in older adults these gradually become unicuspid. Inner rows (two to three) carry tricuspid teeth. This architecture is functionally different from the robust, stout teeth of mbuna that rasp firmly attached algal films from rock; it is optimised for the softer, particulate material encountered over open sand. Sexual dimorphism is present: dominant males develop brighter, more intense coloration than females and non-dominant males. Contrary to its reputation as a plain mbuna, Konings rates it the most colourful of the four Gephyrochromis forms he recognised, chiefly for a bright orange patch across the throat — a marking absent from the muted steel-blue to slate-grey body and subdued lateral markings otherwise typical of males at Msuli Point (Konings, CRC field photographs); females are more cryptic, typically grey-brown. Egg spots are present on the anal fin of males, as is typical for Malawi haplochromines.

Habitat

This species is endemic to Lake Malawi and has been confirmed lake-wide, spanning Malawian, Mozambican and Tanzanian waters, with documented sites including Senga Bay, Monkey Bay, Maleri Island, Domira Bay, Ngara, Karonga, Ntekete and Ruarwe (IUCN 2018 range description). Konings' field work notes Gephyrochromis moorii primarily in the northern sections of the lake, where both Gephyrochromis species are best represented. Unlike the majority of mbuna, which are tied to rocky reef habitat, Gephyrochromis moorii is found exclusively over open sand — it does not occur over rock. FishBase records a depth range of 20–82 ft and the IUCN assessment corroborates sandy habitats from 20–82 ft, but Konings' own field record runs deeper still: he logged the species at Msuli Point, Chintheche, at about 131 ft, and considered its depth the likely reason it was never widely collected. That gap between the database range and a direct field observation at the same locality used for this article's photographs is flagged rather than resolved here. The intermediate zone where steep, rocky coast gives way to a sandy floor is a preferred transitional edge (Konings 2016; FishBase ref. 5595), but the fish spends most of its time over clear, open sand away from rock. The lake's water chemistry at these depths is the typical Malawi envelope: pH roughly 7.7–8.6, surface temperatures 75–82 °F (FishBase cites 75–79 °F and pH ~8.0 as preferred parameters), and moderately hard water (dH ~9–19 per FishBase). The estimated extent of occurrence is about 29,373 mi² and area of occupancy around 2,435 mi² (IUCN 2018), reflecting the lake-wide sand distribution rather than a narrow-reef endemic.

Feeding

Gephyrochromis moorii feeds on loose sediment and the periphyton associated with it — a trophic style sometimes described as 'combing the sand' for aufwuchs and particulate organic matter. The IUCN assessment (Konings et al. 2018) states that it 'feeds on loose sediment', and the genus-level tooth morphology elaborated by hobbyist observers confirms a 'scooping' action at the substrate surface rather than the forceful scraping typical of rock-grazing mbuna. FishBase assigns a trophic level of 3.3 (based on congener models), consistent with omnivory that includes algal material, diatoms, and small invertebrates ingested along with sediment. Males do not maintain fixed feeding territories; instead they move across the sand, excluding other males from feeding patches through brief chases (IUCN 2018). This loosely competitive, mobile foraging strategy is reflected in the species' habit of living in small mixed-sex groups of three to seven individuals (FishBase, citing Konings) rather than holding defended territories with satellite females.

Mating

Like all Lake Malawi haplochromines, Gephyrochromis moorii is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder. Social organisation over the open sand is loose: mixed-sex groups of three to seven individuals share foraging space, and males are not strictly territorial, defending feeding areas rather than spawning pits (IUCN 2018; FishBase). When a female is ripe, the resident dominant male courts her, using the egg-spot markings on his anal fin to trigger milt uptake — the classic haplochromine mouthbrooder mechanism described by Wickler (1962) and Fryer & Iles (1972). Because the species lacks a fixed spawning territory, courtship takes place over the open sand surface. Males in aquaria can be aggressive toward one another at spawning time, though overall the species is reported as calmer than many mbuna; cichlid-forum keepers note that the closely related Gephyrochromis lawsi, kept under similar conditions, shows comparatively low aggression and spawns readily in community mbuna tanks.

Breeding

Gephyrochromis moorii reproduces as a maternal ovophilous mouthbrooder with no pair bond. After spawning the female collects the eggs in her buccal cavity, takes up sperm from the male's egg-spot markings, and broods the clutch for approximately three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Exact wild clutch sizes for this species have not been formally published; congeners and comparably sized Malawi mbuna typically produce 20–50+ eggs per spawn, and a forum account of Gephyrochromis moorii breeding in captivity references clutches of over 50 fry per female — consistent with genus-typical fecundity. In the aquarium the species breeds reliably once settled and well fed; keepers familiar with Gephyrochromis lawsi (the more frequently kept congener) describe females as determined holders that carry to term without much provocation. Brooding females, as in other haplochromines, stop feeding during the hold period. No male parental care is provided after spawning.

In the aquarium

Gephyrochromis moorii is a genuine rarity in the hobby. It surfaces occasionally in specialist Malawi cichlid circles but is not found in typical fish shops, and most keepers who have worked with it come to it through species-focused importers or hobbyist networks. That scarcity should not discourage the prepared aquarist: a species that is uncommonly kept is not necessarily difficult to keep, and Gephyrochromis moorii's requirements map cleanly onto the Malawi hard-alkaline template that any experienced Rift-lake keeper will already be meeting.

A tank of 47 in (four feet, ~55 US gal) is a workable minimum for a small group — one male with two or three females — but 59 in or larger is more comfortable and makes it easier to break sightlines. The floor should be covered in a deep layer of fine sand, three to five centimetres at a minimum: this fish spends most of its time with its snout in the substrate. Rocks and slate can be used to create definition and provide escape routes for subordinate fish, but the open sandy floor must not be blocked — Gephyrochromis moorii is not a crevice-dweller and does not thrive in a tank arranged primarily as a rock pile. Water chemistry must match the Lake Malawi envelope: pH 7.8–8.6 (a target of 8.0–8.2 works well in practice), temperature 75–79 °F, and moderately hard water (dH roughly 10–18). Regular partial water changes of 25–30% weekly are standard Malawi practice and should not be neglected; stable, well-oxygenated water matters more than chasing precise hardness figures.

Feeding is straightforward. In the wild the species grazes loose sediment and aufwuchs, so a diet built around high-quality spirulina-based flake or pellet, supplemented with algae wafers and occasional small invertebrate treats (brine shrimp, mysis), suits it well. High-protein live or frozen feeds should be offered sparingly and not as the dietary staple: the digestive physiology of mbuna-allied cichlids is adapted to plant-rich material, and a diet too heavy in animal protein is a well-documented predisposing factor for Malawi bloat — the bacterial/parasitic enteritis that kills more mbuna in captivity than almost anything else. Fresh vegetable matter (blanched spinach, cucumber) is accepted and beneficial. Feed small amounts twice daily rather than large meals once a day.

Tankmate selection calls for some thought. Gephyrochromis moorii's mid-level aggression and open-sand lifestyle make it a poor fit with either highly aggressive mbuna (Melanochromis, Labeotropheus, territorial Pseudotropheus) that would monopolise the tank, or with delicate, slow-moving species that cannot hold their own in Malawi-pH water. Good companions include other sand-associated or intermediate-zone Malawi species of similar size and comparable temperament — sand-sifting haps, Copadichromis species, or the congener Gephyrochromis lawsi if it can be sourced. Multiple males of the same species will compete; in most tanks one male per tank or one male with clear refugia for subordinates is the practical rule. Mixing with Tanganyika or Victoria cichlids is generally inadvisable because of differing water chemistry needs and behavioural mismatches.

Breeding in captivity is achievable. The female is a maternal mouthbrooder and will carry the eggs for roughly three weeks; experienced keepers note that females of this genus are reliable holders if the tank is not excessively disturbed. A brooding female should ideally be given a quiet corner or a separate grow-out tank after the hold period so that fry are not immediately predated by tankmates. Because the species is rarely kept, documentation of captive breeding is sparse, and keepers who succeed in spawning it make a genuine contribution to the hobby's collective knowledge. The main keeper mistakes to avoid are: allowing pH to slip below 7.5 (carbonate hardness buffers are essential in soft tap-water areas), overfeeding animal protein, overstocking with more aggressive mbuna, and neglecting water changes — the same short list that governs success with virtually all Lake Malawi cichlids.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Gephyrochromis moorii as Least Concern (assessed 22 June 2018; e.T60934A47223751; assessors Konings A., Kazembe J. & Makocho P.; reviewer Snoeks J.), on the basis of a lake-wide distribution and the absence of identified species-specific major threats. Population trend is listed as unknown; no specific population counts are available. Threats recorded are modest: subsistence fishing using beach seines is flagged as a potential — but not confirmed — concern at minority scope and unknown severity, and international ornamental trade exists but the species is noted as rarely collected. Gephyrochromis moorii carries no CITES listing. That broadly stable individual status sits within a lake under growing systemic pressure. Lake Malawi's limnology is changing: warming surface waters and strengthened stratification are reducing the seasonal mixing that delivers nutrients to productive upper layers, with consequences for phytoplankton productivity and the invertebrate communities that underpin the food web (Chavula et al. 2023; Warnatzsch & Reay 2018). Sedimentation from deforestation in the catchment is degrading near-shore habitats, including the sandy transition zones that Gephyrochromis moorii depends on. Intensive artisanal and commercial fishing — primarily targeting the commercially important chambo and usipa fisheries — can incidentally take benthic species in beach-seine operations, and continued fishery pressure has been documented as reducing cichlid populations across the lake (Fryer & Iles 1972; M'balaka et al. 2018). As a shallow sandy-bottom specialist with a lake-wide but patchy distribution, Gephyrochromis moorii is more exposed to near-shore sedimentation and incidental bycatch than open-water species, but the current evidence does not support a threat category above Least Concern. The lake's own conservation trajectory bears watching.
