The Chiloelo population
Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides" "Chiloelo" is the Chiloelo population of Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides", a geographic colour form from the Mozambique coast of Lake Malawi in the south-central part of the lake. It is the same species as Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides", distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides" is one of two undescribed species in the small genus Gephyrochromis, a group of Lake Malawi cichlids that forages over open sand and mud but, unusually, retreats to rocky habitat to breed. Recorded from sites on both the Malawian and Mozambican shores, it takes its trade name from a barred, zebra-like pattern that can be strikingly obscured in darker individuals. Ad Konings’s field notes on the genus, published in the Cichlids Yearbook series, are the main source of documented observation for this species; it has no describing author, FishBase record, or IUCN status.
