Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides" is undescribed: it has no holotype, authority, publication year, or entry of its own in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes. The genus Gephyrochromis was erected by Boulenger and currently comprises four recognised forms — two formally described species, G. moorii and G. lawsii, and two undescribed populations known by trade name, this species and Gephyrochromis sp. "Liuli," documented from the Mbamba Bay area of the lake’s Tanzanian shore (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 1). "Zebroides" — from "zebra" plus the Greek suffix "-oides," meaning "resembling" — refers to the barred pattern the species shows, though Konings notes that some individuals observed among rocks carried such dark overall colouration that the normal barring was almost obscured. As an informal trade name it carries no nomenclatural standing.
Morphology
Gephyrochromis is a small genus of haplochromine cichlids without a strongly documented size record for this species specifically; based on its described congeners, a small-to-medium adult size of roughly 3–4.5 in is a reasonable working estimate rather than a confirmed figure. The name references a zebra-like barred pattern, but per Konings’s field observations some individuals found among rocks showed very dark, almost uniformly dusky colouration that nearly obscured the regular bars — meaning the fish’s appearance can vary considerably between individuals or contexts. Notably, Konings also records that sex could not be reliably distinguished by colouration alone in this species, an unusual degree of similarity between males and females for a Lake Malawi haplochromine (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 1).
Habitat
This species has an unusual dual habitat use for a Malawi cichlid: it forages over open sand, mud and silt-covered floor — the substrate Gephyrochromis as a genus favours — but breeding activity appears to shift toward rocky habitat (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 1). It has been recorded at depths from roughly 23–98 ft, occurring solitarily or in small groups rather than large aggregations. Recorded localities span both shores of the lake — Gome and Selewa in Malawi, Chiloelo and Metangula in Mozambique — indicating a genuinely wide distribution rather than a single narrow population. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi’s typical profile: warm, hard and alkaline, roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6.
Feeding
Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides" forages over sand, mud and silt-covered bottom, consistent with the sand-and-mud foraging habit documented for the genus as a whole; related described species such as G. lawsii are recorded foraging over muddy bay floors in small groups (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 1). This places the genus’s feeding ecology closer to that of sand-sifting haplochromines than to the algae-scraping mode of the rock-dwelling mbuna, despite the fact that this species retreats to rock to breed. No detailed stomach-content study has been published for this species specifically; the diet is inferred from its documented foraging habitat.
Mating
Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides" is recorded foraging over open sand but breeding in rocky habitat, an unusual split between feeding and reproductive habitat for a Lake Malawi cichlid (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 1). This suggests males establish breeding territories among rocks distinct from the sandy grounds where the species spends most of its foraging time, though the fine details of courtship behaviour have not been separately documented. As in other Malawi haplochromines, the mating system is expected to be polygynous with no pair bond. Notably, because males and females cannot be reliably told apart by colour alone in this species, distinguishing courting pairs in the field is unusually difficult even for experienced observers.
Breeding
Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides" is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is standard for Lake Malawi haplochromines. Following spawning at a rocky breeding site, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them through incubation, typically three to four weeks for cichlids of this size, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental care from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this species; the genus is small-bodied enough that a modest clutch, likely a few dozen eggs, is a reasonable expectation rather than a confirmed figure.
In the aquarium
Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides" is not an established aquarium fish, and no consistent husbandry record exists for it in the trade; the following reflects a reasonable extrapolation from its documented biology rather than direct experience. Given its dual habitat use, a tank offering both open sand for foraging and a rocky area for shelter and potential breeding activity would most closely replicate its natural setting, in a footprint of at least 47 in.
Water chemistry should match Lake Malawi: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard general hardness. Diet should include fine sinking foods reflecting its sand-and-mud foraging habit, supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates. Because it is undescribed, rarely if ever seen in the trade, and documented mainly through field observation rather than aquarium keeping, any specimens obtained should be treated as of significant scientific interest and their collection locality carefully preserved.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Gephyrochromis sp. "Zebroides", and none can while it remains formally undescribed. No status, category or year should be attached to it. The genus Gephyrochromis as a whole is thinly documented — even its two formally described species are not established aquarium trade fish, and G. moorii in particular has been noted as difficult to collect owing to its deep-water habitat (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 1) — which makes any assessment of pressures on this species speculative. The accurate statement is that it is unevaluated and that its population status across its recorded Malawian and Mozambican localities is unknown.
