Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Kivu — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Haplochromis olivaceus is a small, olive-drab cichlid found only in Lake Kivu, the gas-charged rift lake straddling Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Described as recently as 1990, it belongs to a modest flock of roughly fifteen haplochromines that are the lake's only native cichlids and live their entire lives crowded into the thin, oxygenated surface layer above Kivu's lethal deep water. Stomach studies show it is less a plankton-chaser than a grazer of bottom algae and detritus, a quiet generalist in one of Africa's strangest lakes.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis olivaceus was formally described in 1990 by Jos Snoeks, Luc De Vos, Eric Coenen and Dirk Thys van den Audenaerde in the journal Cybium, from specimens collected near the port of Gisenyi at the northern end of Lake Kivu; the holotype (MRAC 86-12-P-329) and a long series of paratypes are held at the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, Belgium. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats this 1990 name as the valid one, and FishBase follows suit. Haplochromis olivaceus is the only valid use of the epithet in the genus, with no competing homonym.

The genus name blends the Greek haploos, "single," with chromis, an old name for a perch-like fish; the species epithet olivaceus simply means "olive-coloured." English-language sources are thin enough that the fish has no entrenched common name, though aggregators such as iNaturalist have floated "Olive Kivu Haplo." Like all of Lake Kivu's native cichlids, it sits within the sprawling Victoria–Edward–Kivu superflock of haplochromines — the same explosive radiation that produced the famous species swarms of Lake Victoria — rather than being closely tied to nearby Lake Tanganyika's fauna.

Morphology

This is a small cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of about 3.5 in (3.5 in) standard length for males, with examined females smaller at roughly 2.6 in (2.5 in) SL — so even a large adult would sit comfortably in the palm of your hand. As the name promises, the base colour is an unshowy olive to brownish-green, the sort of muted, silvery-olive livery typical of the lake's generalist haplochromines rather than the electric blues and reds of the better-known Malawi mbuna.

Beyond size and the general olive tone, published descriptive detail is limited, and no widely circulated photograph of a confirmed specimen exists in the popular literature — FishBase itself carries only a placeholder drawing. Distinguishing Haplochromis olivaceus from its Kivu congeners is genuinely difficult work: the lake's endemics differ in fine dental, meristic and head-shape characters that were the basis of Snoeks' 1994 revision, not in the bold colour patterns hobbyists usually rely on. Anyone claiming a firm field ID of this species from a photograph alone should be treated with caution.

Habitat

Haplochromis olivaceus is endemic to Lake Kivu and is known from nowhere else on Earth. Kivu is one of the smaller lakes of the Albertine (western) Rift, perched at about 4,900 ft (1,1608 ft) elevation on the Rwanda–DR Congo border, and it is geologically very young — the modern lake formed after Virunga volcanic eruptions dammed the basin in the late Pleistocene, and its only outlet, the Rusizi River draining south to Lake Tanganyika, is younger still. That recent, isolated history has left Kivu with an unusually impoverished fish fauna: only around 28 native and introduced species in total, of which the fifteen endemic haplochromines are the sole native cichlids.

The type and diet material come from the northern and central lake — Gisenyi and Kibuye Bay — and the species is recorded from the lake's littoral and inshore waters. FishBase logs in-situ conditions of pH 9.1–9.5 (notably alkaline), water temperatures of about 73–77 °F (73–77°F), and a benthopelagic habit; it lists no measured depth band for the species. Critically, Kivu is meromictic: only a surface mixolimnion roughly 197 ft deep carries oxygen, while everything beneath is permanently stratified and anoxic. In practice that confines Haplochromis olivaceus and the rest of the cichlid flock to a thin habitable rind at the top of a very deep lake.

Feeding

The best window into this fish's biology is a gut-content study (Ulyel et al. 1991) of 184 individuals from Gisenyi and Kibuye Bay, summarized in FishBase. It paints a clear picture of a bottom-oriented generalist rather than a plankton specialist: benthic algae and weeds made up roughly 53 percent of the diet by volume, detritus and sediment another 30 percent, and diatoms about 7 percent, with only small contributions from planktonic copepods, insect larvae (chironomids, mayfly nymphs), ostracods and assorted zooplankton. That low-protein, plant-and-debris diet is consistent with the very low trophic level (about 2.1) FishBase estimates for the species.

It is worth flagging a tension in the literature here. Lake Kivu's haplochromines are often described in passing as "typically planktivorous," and some certainly forage on zooplankton in the open water; broader work on the flock shows these fish can fine-tune their jaws and feeding mechanics to littoral versus pelagic life. But the direct diet data for Haplochromis olivaceus point to grazing and detritivory in the inshore zone. The honest reading is that this is an opportunistic generalist that mainly works the bottom and rock surfaces, taking small invertebrates when they are available — not a dedicated plankton-feeder.

Mating

Species-specific courtship detail for Haplochromis olivaceus is scarce — Kivu's cichlids have received far less ecological and ethological study than the radiations of Victoria, Malawi or Tanganyika. What is documented is the size pattern that usually accompanies the haplochromine mating system: examined females are smaller (about 2.5 in SL) than males (to roughly 3.5 in SL), the asymmetry typical of mouthbrooding haplochromines in which males invest in growth and display while females carry the reproductive load.

By analogy with related haplochromines, one would expect males to be the more colourful, territorial sex and spawning to follow the familiar lek-like courtship of the group — a male defending a small patch of substrate and displaying to passing females, which choose among rival males before spawning. For Haplochromis olivaceus specifically these expectations are inference drawn from its close relatives, not documented fact, and the article flags them as such.

Breeding

Like every native cichlid in Lake Kivu, Haplochromis olivaceus is a maternal mouthbrooder; FishBase records the mode plainly as "mouthbrooding by females." After spawning, the female takes the fertilized eggs into her mouth and broods the developing young there, releasing fully formed fry that can briefly shelter back inside her mouth when threatened. This is the textbook haplochromine strategy, and it is the rule across the lake's endemic flock.

No species-specific clutch count or brooding-period figure has been published for Haplochromis olivaceus. By the standard of small haplochromines of this body size, broods are modest — on the order of a few dozen eggs and fry per female — but that figure is genus-typical inference rather than a measured value for this species, and no precise number should be attached to it. Parental care is the mother's alone: there is no documented paternal contribution beyond fertilization.

In the aquarium

For practical purposes, Haplochromis olivaceus is not an aquarium fish. It is a small, plainly coloured Lake Kivu endemic with no established presence in the hobby; the cichlid forums and trade that occasionally handle Kivu material revolve around a few more distinctive species (Haplochromis nigroides, Haplochromis astatodon and the like), usually entering the hobby through one-off collecting trips rather than a steady supply chain. Searches of the major communities — Cichlid Room Companion, cichlid-forum.com, MonsterFishKeepers, the Reddit cichlid groups — turn up plenty of discussion of "Kivu haps" in general but essentially nothing on this species by name. Any care advice attached to it would be borrowed from its relatives, not earned through keeping it, and should be read that way.

If it were kept, the lake's own conditions set the brief: hard, distinctly alkaline water (pH in the 8s to low 9s), temperatures around 73–77°F (73–77 °F), and the rockwork-and-open-water layout suited to a small, mouthbrooding haplochromine. The realistic verdict from a hobbyist's chair is simpler: this is a fish of scientific and biogeographic interest, not a candidate for a display tank, and a keeper wanting an East African mouthbrooder has far better-documented options.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis olivaceus as Least Concern (assessment dated 31 January 2006, by Snoeks, J.), with the population trend listed as Unknown and the noted pressures being subsistence fishing and sedimentation. It is not targeted by the aquarium trade and faces no species-specific collection pressure. So the species' own status is reassuring on paper — but it sits in a lake that is anything but ordinary, and a 2006 Least Concern listing for a single-lake endemic is a status worth holding lightly.

Lake Kivu is a meromictic rift lake whose deep water holds an enormous dissolved reservoir of carbon dioxide and methane and carries a recognised, if currently steady, limnic-eruption hazard; that same methane now feeds a growing commercial gas-extraction and power industry on the lake. Crucially, the cichlids live only in the thin oxygenated surface layer — about the top 197 ft — above that lethal deep water, so the entire endemic flock is squeezed into a narrow, shoreline-hugging band that is exposed to lakeshore population pressure, nutrient loading and sedimentation from one of the more densely settled corners of central Africa. The pelagic zone was also reshaped by the 1959 introduction of the Tanganyika sardine (Limnothrissa miodon), now the backbone of Kivu's fishery. None of this has been shown to threaten Haplochromis olivaceus directly, and it would be wrong to claim otherwise. But a small endemic confined to a strained, gas-charged, rapidly industrialising lake is a genuinely narrow bet, and its conservation outlook is best read as "currently fine, but resting on an unusually thin and pressured habitat."
