The Luwala Reef population

Maylandia lanisticola "Luwala Reef" is the Luwala Reef population of Maylandia lanisticola, a geographic colour form from the Malawi coast of Lake Malawi in the southern part of the lake. It is the same species as Maylandia lanisticola, distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Maylandia lanisticola, the Malawi shell dweller, is one of the most unusual mbuna in Lake Malawi — a small, sandy-bottom cichlid that organises its entire adult life around the empty shells of the apple snail Lanistes nyassanus. While the rest of the mbuna guild fights over algae-covered rocks, lanisticola prospcts the open sand for spent snail shells, retreating into them to shelter, to breed, and apparently for its own security, a lifestyle more reminiscent of Lake Tanganyika's famous lamprologine shellies than anything else in its genus. Warren Burgess first described the species in 1976 from specimens taken off Cape Maclear, in the south of the lake; half a century later it remains a niche interest in the hobby, known to those who seek it out precisely because it offers something no other mbuna does.
