Nandopsis haitiensis, the Haitian cichlid, is the only cichlid native to Hispaniola — the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic — and one of just three living members of the only cichlid genus endemic to the Greater Antilles. A large, pale, net-patterned predator that ranges from mountain streams to brackish coastal lagoons, it is the Hispaniolan counterpart of Cuba's biajaca, and its very presence on an oceanic island makes it a key piece in the long-running puzzle of how a strictly freshwater fish family reached the Caribbean islands.

Taxonomy & naming

The Haitian cichlid was described by the American ichthyologist John Tee-Van in 1935 as Cichlasoma haitiense, from the Étang Saumâtre — the large brackish lake near Manneville on Haiti's Cul-de-Sac Plain. The epithet haitiensis simply marks the type locality, though the fish occurs across the whole of Hispaniola, including the Dominican Republic. The species was long carried under Cichlasoma and later 'Cichlasoma' as that catch-all genus was broken up, and is placed in Nandopsis (Gill, 1862) — the genus of the Antillean endemics — in its modern, restricted sense. A second Hispaniolan name, Nandopsis vombergae (Ladiges, 1938) from the Río Yaque del Sur in the Dominican Republic, is treated by FishBase and most aquarists as a junior synonym of haitiensis, although the Catalog of Fishes still lists it as nominally valid and some authors keep the two apart; the matter turns on whether the morphological differences between northern and southern Hispaniolan populations are species-level. Nandopsis as a whole contains only haitiensis on Hispaniola plus the fossil Nandopsis woodringi (late Oligocene, Haiti), and tetracanthus and ramsdeni on Cuba. Chakrabarty's 2006 molecular analysis (Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution) confirmed the genus as a tight, geographically defined clade — the sole cichlid lineage endemic to the Greater Antilles — and read its distribution as evidence for a drift-vicariance origin of the island fauna.

Morphology

Nandopsis haitiensis is a large, powerfully built heroine cichlid. FishBase gives a maximum of about 8.5 in SL, but field and aquarium reports describe much larger fish — to roughly 12 in in the wild and exceptionally to 15.5 in total length in captivity — making it one of the bigger Antillean cichlids. The body is pale: males tend toward cream or ivory, females toward a clean ivory-white, both overlaid with a fine dark reticulation or 'net' pattern and a series of darker blotches and bars. The dorsal and anal fins are drawn out into notably long points in adults. Breeding fish transform dramatically — females in particular turn almost black when guarding eggs and fry, a vivid signal against the pale ground colour. Mature males develop the heavy forehead (nuchal hump) characteristic of dominant heroine cichlids, especially during competition. Sexual dimorphism is therefore expressed in size (males larger and more humped), fin length and breeding coloration rather than in a fixed difference of pattern.

Habitat

The Haitian cichlid is endemic to Hispaniola and, like its Cuban relatives, is a striking habitat generalist — the single native cichlid occupying the whole spectrum of the island's fresh and brackish waters. It is recorded from lowland rivers and their reservoirs, clear upland and mountain streams, and the brackish coastal lakes and lagoons that ring the island, including its type locality, the saline Étang Saumâtre. Named wild sites include the Río Guayamouco near Hinche in Haiti and the Río Yaque del Sur drainage in the Dominican Republic. Reported aquarium-relevant water values run warm — about 75–84 °F — with the species thriving at a near-neutral to mildly alkaline pH (roughly 7.0–7.5) and moderate hardness (around 12–16 °dH), and tolerating genuinely brackish conditions in its coastal populations. As with the genus generally, this euryhaline ability — the capacity to live in salt-influenced water — is more than a husbandry footnote: tolerance of brackish water is exactly the trait that lets a 'freshwater' cichlid persist on, and potentially disperse to, oceanic islands, and it sits at the heart of the biogeographic interest of Nandopsis.

Feeding

Despite its predatory build, Nandopsis haitiensis is more of an omnivore than its Cuban congeners. Stomach analyses of wild fish have found algae, other aquatic plants and snails — including the operculate 'turret shells' (cerithioid snails) of its brackish habitats — alongside the invertebrate prey expected of a large cichlid. FishBase summarises its diet as algae, aquatic plants and shelled molluscs. This mixed, partly herbivorous and molluscivorous diet is reflected in husbandry advice to feed it fibre-rich, lower-protein foods rather than a purely meaty menu. In the impoverished native fish fauna of Hispaniola — where no cichlid radiation occurred and Nandopsis is the lone representative of the family — the Haitian cichlid functions as a large, flexible generalist, grazing plant and algal material and crushing snails as readily as it takes insects and smaller animals.

Mating

Nandopsis haitiensis forms monogamous breeding pairs that hold and defend a territory, with courtship marked by the intensifying coloration, lateral displays and jaw-locking typical of heroine cichlids. The transformation of the ripe female — darkening toward black — is part of the pair-bonding and nest-guarding signalling. These are large, aggressive fish, and pairing is hazardous: aquarists report that the female, once spawning, becomes intensely defensive and 'does not hesitate to attack' her own partner if he comes too close to the nest. In the wild, pairs establish over firm substrate or near cover, the male defending the broader territory while the female commands the immediate spawning site — the standard cichlid division of labour, here played out by an unusually powerful and short-tempered fish.

Breeding

The Haitian cichlid is a biparental, open substrate spawner. The pair clean a hard surface — a stone, root or comparable site — and the female deposits a clutch of roughly 150–200 eggs (FishBase), which she tends and fans while the male guards the territory. At breeding temperatures the eggs hatch in about three to four days, and the wrigglers become free-swimming roughly a week later. The pair guard the fry closely, and the female's black breeding dress accompanies an aggression so intense it is frequently directed at the male. Notably, the fry show contact behaviour reminiscent of discus and uaru — foraging on mucus-like skin secretions from the parents in their first days — and keepers report high fry mortality around the 1–1.5 in stage, a difficult juvenile bottleneck. Successful rearing thereafter depends on ample space and abundant small foods. The whole sequence — large clutch, fierce biparental defence, parental-skin grazing by fry — places haitiensis squarely among the substrate-guarding heroine cichlids.

In the aquarium

Nandopsis haitiensis is kept by specialists who value it as a rare island endemic, but it is emphatically not a community fish: it is large, predatory and highly territorial, and demands committed, experienced care. A pair needs a big tank — on the order of 105–130 US gal or more — with a long footprint so the fish can hold territory without being cornered.

Water should be warm and stable: temperature about 79–84 °F, pH near neutral to mildly alkaline (roughly 7.0–7.5), and moderate to hard water (around 12–16 °dH) suit it well, matching its wild Hispaniolan range. Coastal, brackish-origin stock may appreciate a little salt, and any water changes should be done gradually — keepers note the species can be sensitive to abrupt changes, a vulnerability sometimes attributed to its long island isolation. Strong filtration is essential for a large, messy carnivore-omnivore, and rockwork plus a cave or flat spawning stone over a sand substrate provides territory and a nest site; sturdy or potted plants only, as softer greenery will be dug up or eaten.

Feeding should reflect the mixed natural diet: a varied menu that includes vegetable and algal matter (spirulina, blanched greens) and snails alongside frozen and live invertebrate foods, with the protein kept moderate and fibre relatively high — overfeeding rich, meaty food is a common mistake. A weekly fast day is sometimes recommended.

Temperament is the limiting factor. The species is best kept as a single fish, a bonded pair, or — in a very large tank — with other big, robust cichlids; small or peaceful tankmates will be eaten or harassed, and a spawning pair may turn on each other. Because it is the only cichlid of Hispaniola and of real conservation interest, many keepers maintain it as a species project and take care to keep stock pure rather than hybridising it with mainland 'Cichlasoma'.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Nandopsis haitiensis as Least Concern (assessed 15 June 2020 by T.J. Lyons and R. Rodríguez-Silva, published 2021), citing its distribution across the whole of Hispaniola and its tolerance of a wide range of fresh and brackish habitats. As the only native cichlid of the island — and one of only three living members of the sole cichlid genus endemic to the Greater Antilles — it is a fish of outsized biogeographic and conservation significance despite its relatively secure status. The wider context is sobering: Hispaniola, and Haiti in particular, faces severe deforestation, watershed degradation, pollution and the spread of introduced fishes (notably tilapias), pressures that bear on all of the island's freshwater life. None is yet documented as a population-level threat to the Haitian cichlid, but the long-term fate of Nandopsis haitiensis is bound to the health of an island freshwater fauna that has no cichlid replacement to give.
