The Tumbi Point population

Petrotilapia sp. "Nigra Tumbi" "Tumbi Point" is the Tumbi Point population of Petrotilapia sp. "Nigra Tumbi", a geographic colour form from the Mozambique coast of Lake Malawi in the central part of the lake. It is the same species as Petrotilapia sp. "Nigra Tumbi", distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species

Petrotilapia sp. "Nigra Tumbi" is an undescribed rock-scraping mbuna recorded at Tumbi Point on the Mozambican shore of Lake Malawi. Its trade name places it among the many "nigra" Petrotilapia forms recorded at scattered localities across the lake — populations whose breeding males develop a predominantly black colour, one of several recurring male colour morphs that make Petrotilapia one of the most taxonomically tangled genera in Lake Malawi, and the same pattern for which the formally described Petrotilapia nigra Marsh, 1983 is named.
