The Lupingu population
Pseudotropheus sp. "Lucerna North" "Lupingu" is the Lupingu population of Pseudotropheus sp. "Lucerna North", a geographic colour form from the Tanzania coast of Lake Malawi in the far northern part of the lake. It is the same species as Pseudotropheus sp. "Lucerna North", distinguished by its collection locality and local coloration; aquarists keep and breed it as a discrete, provenance-labelled line.

About the species
Pseudotropheus sp. "Lucerna North" is an undescribed mbuna cichlid recorded from Lupingu on the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi, the northernmost recorded population in the "lucerna" trade complex. The same Lupingu reef also produces an unrelated large-bodied trade form catalogued elsewhere in this atlas under Maylandia, underlining how many distinct undescribed cichlids this single stretch of northern shoreline supports. This form has never been given a formal scientific description; no authority, IUCN status, or FishBase entry should be attached to it.
