Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the prolific Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1897 as Pelmatochromis congicus, in the second instalment of his "Descriptions of new fishes from the upper Congo" (Annals and Magazine of Natural History, series 6, volume 20, pages 422–427), on material collected in the upper Congo. For three-quarters of a century it sat within Pelmatochromis, a sprawling, ill-defined genus that the ichthyology of the day used as a holding pen for a great many West and Central African cichlids of uncertain affinity.
That changed in 1973, when Ethelwynn Trewavas of the British Museum (Natural History) published her landmark revision "On the cichlid fishes of the genus Pelmatochromis, with proposal of a new genus for Pterochromis congicus; on the relationship between Pelmatochromis and Tilapia, and the recognition of Sarotherodon as a distinct genus." In that paper she removed congicus to a new monotypic genus, Pterochromis, recognising that it stood apart from the true Pelmatochromis on dental, osteological and meristic grounds and lay closer to the tilapiine line. The Cichlid Room Companion places Pterochromis in the tribe Tilapiini of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae; the genus has remained monotypic ever since, with congicus its only member. The sole synonym is therefore the original combination, Pelmatochromis congicus Boulenger, 1897. FishBase's nomenclature carries one other historical wrinkle worth noting: a record from the Gribingui in the upper Chari (Lake Chad basin) of the Central African Republic, which the IUCN assessment treats as doubtful — the species is securely known only from the Congo system.
Morphology
Pterochromis congicus is a moderately large, deep-bodied cichlid by the standards of the central Congo's smaller riverine forms. FishBase gives a maximum of 6 in standard length (snout to tail base), drawn from the CLOFFA check-list of African freshwater fishes; the same source records a minimum total length of 7 in, and hobbyists who have handled the fish describe specimens around 6 inches (roughly 6 in), so a mature adult of 6–7 in total length is a fair expectation. A length–weight relationship estimated for the species (a ≈ 0.019, b ≈ 3.01) describes the near-isometric, robust build typical of a generalised cichlid body plan rather than the slim, current-adapted shape of the Congo's rheophilic specialists such as Steatocranus or Teleogramma.
Detailed colour and pattern notes are scarce because the fish is so rarely kept or photographed alive; the few aquarium images show a plain, brassy-to-grey cichlid without the bold markings of its showier relatives, which is part of why it has never caught on in the trade. The generic name is the clearest morphological signpost: Trewavas coined Pterochromis from the Greek pteron (fin), in reference to the elongated soft rays of the fins. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for this species; as in most substrate-associated African cichlids, males are expected to reach a somewhat larger size and to carry longer, more produced fin tips than ripe females, but this remains an inference rather than a documented difference.
Habitat
The species is a fish of the central Congo lowlands. Its range runs from Pool Malebo (the former Stanley Pool), the lake-like widening of the Congo immediately upstream of Kinshasa and Brazzaville, north and east through the main river and its tributaries as far as the Wagenia (Boyoma) Falls at Kisangani, where the navigable upper Congo ends. Within that span it is recorded from the great blackwater lakes of the Cuvette Centrale — Lake Tumba and Lake Mai-Ndombe (Lac Mai-Ndombe) — both shallow, tea-coloured floodplain lakes set in the peat-swamp forests at the heart of the basin. Politically the range falls in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the neighbouring Republic of the Congo; the IUCN treats the lone upper-Shari (Gribingui) record in the Central African Republic as doubtful.
The IUCN habitat classification marks the species as occurring in permanent and seasonal rivers, streams and creeks, in permanent freshwater lakes, and in freshwater marshes and pools — the full range of a lowland floodplain generalist that moves between the river channel and its inundated margins. FishBase classes it as freshwater and demersal, living on or near the bottom. No in-situ temperature, pH or hardness measurements have been published specifically for this fish, but its waters are those of the equatorial Congo lowlands: warm year-round (roughly 75–82 °F), and ranging from the soft, strongly acidic, darkly stained blackwater of Lake Mai-Ndombe and Lake Tumba (pH often well below 6) to the more mineral-rich, near-neutral white water of the main Congo channel. Published depth figures are likewise lacking; as a demersal floodplain and shallow-lake fish it should be expected in the upper few metres of the water column, and a band of roughly 0–33 ft is a defensible estimate pending direct records.
Feeding
Diet has not been studied in detail. FishBase flags Pterochromis congicus as "possibly a predatory species," and its estimated trophic level of about 3.4 — derived from body size and the trophic positions of its closest relatives rather than from gut analysis — is consistent with a carnivorously inclined generalist rather than a herbivore or fine detritivore. As a demersal fish it presumably forages over the bottom and through the leaf litter and soft sediments of the floodplain, taking aquatic insects, other invertebrates and small fishes, very much in the manner of other medium-sized opportunistic Congo cichlids. Until stomach-content data are gathered this remains the most that can honestly be said; the species is best described as a benthic, probably predatory omnivore whose precise place in the Congo food web is still unresolved.
Mating
Nothing has been published on the social structure, courtship or pair-forming behaviour of Pterochromis congicus. The fish is rare in nature and effectively absent from the hobby, so the observations that underpin the "Mating" account for better-known cichlids — territory establishment, colour signalling, pair bonding — simply do not exist for this species. By analogy with related substrate-spawning Pseudocrenilabrinae one would expect some form of territorial, biparental pair behaviour around the time of spawning, but that is an expectation drawn from the wider group rather than anything recorded for congicus itself. This is one of the genuine blanks in the species' biology, and it is more honest to flag it as unknown than to fill it with borrowed detail.
Breeding
The reproductive biology of Pterochromis congicus is undocumented. No clutch sizes, spawning observations, egg or larval descriptions, or accounts of parental care have been published for the species, in the wild or in captivity — a direct consequence of its rarity and its absence from aquarium culture. FishBase carries no maturity, fecundity, spawning or egg data for it. Where the genus sits taxonomically offers only a weak steer: as a member of the tilapiine line within the Pseudocrenilabrinae, congicus could plausibly be either a substrate guarder or a mouthbrooder, since both strategies occur among its near relatives, and there is no firm basis for choosing between them. Pending an actual spawning, the breeding mode is best recorded as unresolved; congeneric figures cannot be cited because the genus is monotypic and no comparable species exists. This is precisely the kind of gap that a first captive breeding, were the fish ever to become established, would fill.
In the aquarium
Pterochromis congicus is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is exported only as an incidental contaminant of shipments of other Congo species, has never had any meaningful presence in the hobby, and the handful of keepers who have held it — Oliver Lucanus and Greg Steeves among them — treated it as a curiosity rather than a fish with an established husbandry. There is, consequently, no settled care sheet, no documented spawning protocol and no body of tankmate experience to draw on; anyone keeping it is working without a map.
What can be said is extrapolated from the fish's size and biotope. A demersal cichlid of 6 in or more needs a substantial tank — on the order of a 47 in / 450-litre (~100 US gallon) footprint or larger for a small group — with a soft sand bottom, scattered wood and rockwork to break up sightlines, and the strong filtration and large, regular water changes that any heavy-bodied Congo cichlid demands. Water should track its wild range: warm (about 75–82 °F) and anywhere from soft and acidic (mirroring the blackwater of Lake Mai-Ndombe and Lake Tumba) to moderately mineralised and near-neutral (the main Congo channel), which suggests a fairly adaptable fish in terms of chemistry. Given the FishBase note that it is "possibly predatory," it should not be combined with anything small enough to be eaten, and like most large riverine cichlids it is likely to be territorial, especially around spawning. None of this has been tested in practice — it is the considered best guess for a fish whose captive care remains, frankly, unwritten.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pterochromis congicus as Least Concern (assessed 17 October 2019, published 2020 by Diouf, K. & Moelants, T.; assessment 181561/134880999, current in Red List version 2025-2). The justification is straightforward: the species is widespread across the central Congo basin and faces no known major threats, so despite the near-total absence of population data it does not approach the thresholds for a threatened category. The assessment records no continuing decline, lists the population trend as unknown, and notes only local harvesting for human consumption — the fish is taken as food where it occurs, but at a scale that raises no flag. It carries no CITES or CMS listing.
The broader context is the Congo basin itself, the second-richest freshwater system on Earth after the Amazon, whose lowland ecosystems face mounting pressure from deforestation, expanding fisheries, and the degradation of the Cuvette Centrale peatlands that cradle Lake Tumba and Lake Mai-Ndombe. None of these is documented as a specific threat to this particular cichlid, and as a wide-ranging habitat generalist it is far less exposed than the basin's many narrow-range endemics. Its real conservation problem is not extinction risk but ignorance: so little is known of its abundance, ecology and reproduction that any future change in its status would be hard to detect at all.
