Congolapia crassa is a stout, deep-bodied tilapiine cichlid of the central Congo basin, one of just three species in a genus carved out of the old catch-all "Tilapia" by Dunz, Vreven and Schliewen in 2012. Described by Jacques Pellegrin in 1903 from the Alima River, it is a riverine substrate-spawner of grassy and forested banks rather than a lake fish, and it has essentially no aquarium history. Its name says what sets it apart: crassa is Latin for thick or stout, a nod to the noticeably chunkier build that separates it from its two slimmer cousins.

Taxonomy & naming

Congolapia crassa was first described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1903 as Tilapia crassa, in the Bulletin du Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, from material in the Paris museum's collection. The type locality is Ndele on the Alima River, a right-bank tributary of the middle Congo, and the holotype (MNHN 1886-0448) remains in Paris; the name was catalogued by Blanc in 1962. For more than a century the fish languished, like dozens of other African substrate-brooders, inside the vast and frankly artificial dustbin genus Tilapia. That changed in 2012, when Andreas Dunz, Emmanuel Vreven and Ulrich Schliewen erected the new genus Congolapia (type species Tilapia bilineata Pellegrin 1900) for a small clade of central-Congo tilapiines, formally transferring crassa into it. The genus name is a contraction of Congo and Tilapia, advertising both the group's home basin and its tilapiine roots. Congolapia contains exactly three species — Congolapia bilineata, Congolapia crassa, and the newly described Congolapia louna — and sits within the substrate-spawning tilapiine assemblage of the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae (tribe Tilapiini in the older arrangement). Dunz and colleagues diagnosed crassa morphologically: it has two complete scale rows (plus a row of very small scales) between the upper lateral line and the base of the last dorsal spine, where Congolapia bilineata has only one complete row, and it carries fewer gill rakers on the first ceratobranchial (8–11) than Congolapia louna (13). The 2012 paper was part of a larger reappraisal of the substrate-brooding tilapiines that the same authors continued in their 2013 revision, work that ultimately dismembered "Tilapia" into a series of smaller, better-defined genera.

Morphology

Congolapia crassa is a robust, deep-bodied cichlid that reaches about 6 in in standard length. Its defining proportion — and the source of its epithet — is body depth: at roughly 40 to 48 percent of standard length it is appreciably deeper-bodied than either congener (Congolapia bilineata at about 32–40 percent, Congolapia louna at about 37–42 percent), with only minimal overlap, giving it the stocky silhouette Pellegrin's name (crassa, Latin for thick or stout) records. The fins follow the tilapiine plan: 16 to 17 dorsal spines with 8 to 10 soft rays, three anal spines with 7 to 9 soft rays. All scales are cycloid, with 25 to 27 along the horizontal line. In life the background colour ranges from reddish-brown to bluish, the chest and belly paling to light brown or whitish with small reddish flecks and the back darker; the flank below the lateral line is more bluish, the upper head a dark olive-brown and the lower head lighter, with a turquoise upper lip. A horizontal iridescent turquoise line runs above the front margin of the preopercle, and there is a thin bluish lachrymal stripe from below the eye to the jaw angle plus a black opercular spot drawn out into a sloping bar. Depending on mood the fish shows five or six broad, backward-slanted black bars (unbranched, not Y-shaped) and a band across the nape. A black 'tilapia spot' marks the soft dorsal fin, the dorsal and caudal fins are reddish-brown to yellow with whitish edging, and the pelvic and anal fins are greenish-yellow. No consistent sexual dimorphism has been documented for the species; like most substrate-spawning tilapiines the sexes are broadly similar in colour and finnage.

Habitat

Congolapia crassa is endemic to the western and central Congo basin, recorded from both the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Documented localities span the Alima (its type river), Lefini, Sangha, Pool Malebo (Stanley Pool), Itimbiri, and the affluents of the Luilaka — a scatter of right- and left-bank tributaries and floodplain systems across the great central depression of the basin, the Cuvette Centrale. This is a lowland, blackwater-and-clearwater world of slow tropical rivers, flooded forest and grassy margins lying around 984 ft above sea level. Field collections place the species in both grass-bank and forest-bank habitats, and crucially in both the dry and the wet season, suggesting it is a year-round resident of these marginal zones rather than a seasonal migrant into them. It is a strictly freshwater, warm-water fish; no in-situ chemistry has been published specifically for crassa, but its habitats are the soft, warm, mildly acidic to near-neutral waters typical of the Congo lowlands. Like most riverine tilapiines it lives in shallow shoreline and floodplain water rather than the deep channel, so its effective depth range is the shallow littoral — on the order of a few metres at most. The collection records of Dunz, Vreven and Schliewen (2012) remain the primary source for the species' distribution and ecology; it is otherwise very poorly studied.

Feeding

No direct dietary study of Congolapia crassa has been published, and its gut contents and feeding mechanics in the wild are undocumented. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.2, which would place it as a low- to mid-level omnivore — the default ecology for the substrate-spawning tilapiine cichlids from which the genus was split. Most of those fishes are generalist feeders that graze and browse along banks and over the bottom, taking a mix of algae and aufwuchs, plant material, detritus and small benthic invertebrates as they work the marginal vegetation and substrate. Its occurrence in both grass-bank and forest-bank habitats is consistent with that kind of opportunistic shoreline foraging rather than any narrow specialisation. Until a gut-content or stable-isotope study is done, however, the specifics of what Congolapia crassa eats in the Alima, Lefini and Sangha remain inferred from its relatives rather than directly observed.

Mating

The pre-spawning behaviour of Congolapia crassa has not been described — there are no published observations of courtship, pair formation or territoriality in this species, in the wild or in captivity. What can be said rests on its phylogenetic position. Congolapia belongs to the substrate-spawning tilapiine lineage (the group built around the true Tilapia, as opposed to the mouthbrooding Sarotherodon and Oreochromis), and in that lineage reproduction is overwhelmingly a matter of monogamous or weakly polygamous pairs that establish and defend a bottom territory ahead of spawning. By analogy with its substrate-brooding relatives, Congolapia crassa is expected to form pairs that clear and guard a patch of substrate or a sheltered surface before laying, with both partners participating in defence. None of this has been confirmed for the species itself, and it should be read as genus-typical inference rather than documented fact.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented in Congolapia crassa. No clutch counts, egg or larval descriptions, or accounts of parental care exist for it, and the species appears never to have been spawned in captivity. Its reproductive mode is inferred from its membership in the substrate-spawning tilapiine clade: these are biparental substrate-brooders (also called guarders or substratophils), depositing adhesive eggs on a cleaned solid surface or in a shallow depression and then guarding the eggs and free-swimming fry together, in contrast to the maternal mouthbrooding of Oreochromis and Sarotherodon. Genus-typical clutch sizes for small substrate-brooding tilapiines of this body size run from roughly a hundred to a few hundred eggs, but no figure has been published for crassa specifically and none should be invented. Until someone collects ripe fish or breeds the species, the spawning mode stands as a confident inference from its relatives while the numbers — fecundity, egg size, fry timing — remain genuinely unknown.

In the aquarium

Congolapia crassa is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a poorly known central-Congo riverine cichlid that is not collected for the ornamental trade, has no established presence in the hobby, and carries no body of keeping or breeding experience to draw on. FishBase records no aquaculture or aquarium use, the Cichlid Room Companion profile is a stub built around the type illustration, and there are no reliable husbandry reports for the species anywhere. Any keeping advice would therefore be extrapolation from its biology rather than tested practice. If a specimen did reach a tank, the sensible starting point would mirror its habitat: a spacious aquarium with soft, warm water (roughly pH 6.0–7.5 and 75–82 °F), a sandy or fine substrate, driftwood and root cover to imitate forest-bank margins, and the strong filtration and generous tank size that any robust, deep-bodied tilapiine of nearly 6 in demands. Substrate-spawning tilapiines are also typically territorial and can be combative around spawning time, so a single pair in a large tank with sightline breaks would be the prudent assumption. All of this is informed guesswork; the honest summary is that nobody has kept this fish in a way that has been written down, and it should be regarded as a wild species of scientific rather than hobby interest.

Conservation

Congolapia crassa has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — its status is Not Evaluated (NE), confirmed by a live check of the Red List, and FishBase likewise records no IUCN, CITES or CMS listing for it. That absence reflects how little attention the species has received rather than any judgement that it is secure. It is a narrow-range central-Congo endemic known from a modest set of tributary and floodplain localities, the kind of distribution that can make a fish vulnerable even where no specific threat has been documented. No fishery or trade pressure is recorded against it. The broader backdrop is the general state of Congo-basin freshwaters, where deforestation, expanding artisanal and small-scale fishing, and habitat alteration along rivers and floodplains are recognised pressures on the basin's exceptionally rich and still incompletely catalogued fish fauna. For Congolapia crassa specifically, the most honest statement is that its conservation status is simply unknown, and that a formal assessment and basic ecological study are both overdue.
