About the species
Sciaenochromis sp. "Deep Water" is an undescribed predatory cichlid recorded from the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, one of several field forms that extend the well-known genus Sciaenochromis — best represented in the hobby by the electric-blue S. fryeri — into deeper water than its described relatives typically occupy. It shares the genus's fusiform, mid-water ambush build, but colour and morphology specific to this population have not been formally documented. No authority, description or conservation status attaches to it.
