Taxonomy & naming
Sciaenochromis sp. "Deep Water" is not a formally described species and has no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It belongs to Sciaenochromis, a genus of predatory Lake Malawi haplochromines erected by David Eccles and Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1989, containing only four formally described species — S. ahli, S. benthicola, S. fryeri and S. psammophilus — alongside roughly a dozen undescribed forms recognised informally through field references such as the Cichlid Room Companion and malawi.si, including S. sp. 'deep' and S. sp. 'torpedo head' as well as this South East Arm population. The trade name flags depth as the distinguishing character: this form is recorded from deeper water than the well-known reef- and cave-associated S. fryeri and S. ahli, in a pattern echoed by the separately recorded (and not necessarily identical) S. sp. 'deep' from Youngs Bay. Whether "Deep Water" and "Deep" represent the same population under two names, related but distinct deep forms, or unrelated convergent deep-water Sciaenochromis has not been resolved, and this form has not been matched with confidence to any described species.
Morphology
This form shares the genus's fusiform, torpedo-shaped body and relatively large, slightly projecting jaws built for hunting small fish in open or semi-open water, rather than the enlarged sensory pores of the superficially similar sand-hunting Aulonocara peacocks. Described Sciaenochromis run from about 4.5 in standard length in S. fryeri up to around 8 in total length in S. ahli, and this form is presumed to fall within that genus-typical range, though no measurements have been published specifically for it. Colour has not been documented for this population; fish taken from deeper, dimmer water often show more muted pigmentation than the vivid metallic blue of shallow-reef S. fryeri males, but that is an inference from general depth-related pattern in cichlids rather than a confirmed observation of this form.
Habitat
Sciaenochromis sp. "Deep Water" is recorded from the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, a broad, comparatively deep southeastern basin of the lake. Described Sciaenochromis occupy the intermediate rock-sand transition zone and rocky caves at depths of roughly 33–131 ft for S. fryeri, with S. ahli recorded down to around 492 ft in rocky habitat with caves and crevices. This form's trade name places it explicitly in deeper water than the genus's shallow-reef norm, consistent with material recorded from the more open, offshore parts of the South East Arm rather than the fringing reefs closer to shore. The surrounding water carries Lake Malawi's characteristic hard, alkaline chemistry, with light and temperature both declining with depth.
Feeding
As with other Sciaenochromis, this form is presumed to be a piscivore specialised in hunting small fish rather than grazing algae or sifting sand — the genus sits at a high trophic level, with S. ahli and S. fryeri both placed around trophic level 4.2 on FishBase, among the more predatory niches in the Malawi flock. The best-documented feeding behaviour in the genus is a striking piece of aggressive mimicry: Konings describes S. fryeri stalking prey with a head-down, rocking posture that imitates a harmless algae-grazing fish, drifting closer until it is within striking range before delivering a sudden sideways strike, and hunting at the margins of kampango (Bagrus meridionalis) catfish nests to pick off the dense clouds of juvenile fish gathered there. Whether this deep-water South East Arm population shares that specific hunting technique has not been observed, but the underlying niche of ambushing or stalking small fish is consistent with the genus as a whole. No feeding study specific to this population has been published.
Mating
Courtship has not been described for this form specifically. By analogy with the wider genus, Sciaenochromis are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond: territorial males in breeding colour court passing females over a cleared site, and Konings describes S. fryeri males in particular as only weakly territorial, sometimes gathering loosely rather than spacing widely. Whether this deeper-water form follows the same loosely territorial pattern documented in its shallower congeners has not been observed.
Breeding
Sciaenochromis sp. "Deep Water" is treated as a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with its genus and the wider Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation. Following spawning the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them alone; Konings documents a brooding period of roughly three weeks for S. fryeri before she releases free-swimming fry, with no male or biparental care beyond her own. No clutch-size figures have been published for any Sciaenochromis species, including this population, and fry number and size are expected to scale with the size of the brooding female, following the pattern typical of Malawi haplochromine mouthbrooders generally. This account follows genus-level inference rather than direct observation of this population's own breeding behaviour.
In the aquarium
Sciaenochromis sp. "Deep Water" is not established in the aquarium hobby with an identity of its own, unlike its famous congener S. fryeri, one of the most widely traded Malawi haps. Deeper-collected Sciaenochromis material of this kind typically reaches hobbyists, if at all, as unlabelled trawl or dive bycatch rather than as a targeted import. Where kept, it would need the same broad husbandry as its genus: hard, alkaline water in the mid-to-high 7s to low 8s pH, a predator-appropriate diet, and tankmates too large to be treated as prey, but no husbandry information specific to this form has been documented.
Conservation
Sciaenochromis sp. "Deep Water" has not been evaluated by the IUCN. As an undescribed form without a published scientific name it has no Red List category or assessment. The genus's two assessed described species, S. fryeri and S. ahli, are both Least Concern (2018), reflecting broad distributions, though the genus as a whole, being endemic to a single lake, remains exposed to the basin-wide pressures of fishing, sediment and nutrient loading and climate-driven warming documented for Lake Malawi. No conservation status beyond "not assessed" should be attached to this form.
