Taxonomy & naming
Franz Steindachner described Hemichromis angolensis in 1865, in a short Portuguese-academy paper based on a single specimen about 8 in long sent from Angola. He assigned it to Hemichromis, then a catch-all genus for African jewel cichlids, but his account is unusually detailed for its brevity: he reported a brown upper body, dark-orange longitudinal bands across the lower flanks, and — most tellingly — dark-violet spots or rings on the membranes of the dorsal, anal and caudal fins. The type locality was given only as 'Angola'; the precise site, the Lucala River above the Calandula Falls (the former Duque de Bragança Falls), a northern tributary of the Kwanza (Cuanza) River, was supplied by de Brito Capello's Lisbon museum catalogue of 1873. The holotype (Lisbon Museum BC 3) was later lost, and for most of the twentieth century the name drifted: Bell-Cross (1975) treated it as a nomen dubium and Daget and colleagues (1991) listed it as incertae sedis, unable to match the description to any living fish with confidence.
The name was resurrected by Anton Lamboj and Stephan Koblmüller (2022), whose molecular revision of Hemichromis split the genus in two — leaving the four large 'five-spotted' species (Hemichromis fasciatus, Hemichromis elongatus, Hemichromis camerounensis and a revalidated Hemichromis angolensis) in Hemichromis, and moving the nine small red jewel cichlids to a new genus, Rubricatochromis. They designated a neotype for Hemichromis angolensis, but from the lower Kwanza floodplain rather than the falls, and their sampling of the species was limited to two specimens from the distant Okavango. Pedro Bragança and Paul Skelton (2025) challenged this. Pointing out that the Okavango–Zambezi fauna does not cross the high escarpment into the lower Kwanza, and that Steindachner's description (brown dorsum, orange bands, spotted fin membranes, a 8 in body) matches no five-spotted Hemichromis, they rejected the 2022 neotype as non-compliant with the Code and designated a new one (SAIAB 246736, 6.5 in SL) collected at the type locality itself. Their specimen is not a jewel cichlid: they reassigned the species to Serranochromis, the genus of large predatory mouthbrooders. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists the current status as Serranochromis angolensis (Steindachner 1865), a conclusion echoed by Morgenstern and Schindler (2026), even as FishBase and much of the hobby literature still carry the Hemichromis combination.
Morphology
Reported size depends entirely on which concept of the species one accepts, and the figures do not agree. Steindachner's 1865 type measured about 8 in, and the 2025 neotype is 6.5 in (6.5 in) standard length — a robust fish. FishBase, working from the Lamboj & Koblmüller five-spotted concept, gives a maximum of just 4.5 in SL, less than half that. The discrepancy is itself a clue: Bragança and Skelton argued that a 8 in body is simply unattainable by a five-spotted Hemichromis, which is one reason they removed the name from that group. Meristics recorded under the Hemichromis concept run to 13–15 dorsal spines, 10–12 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 9–11 anal soft rays, with a deep body (about 30–42% of standard length) and a fairly deep head.
The coloration in the original description is the diagnostic crux. Steindachner described a brown upper body grading to dark-orange longitudinal bands on the lower flanks, and violet spots or rings scattered across the soft membranes of the dorsal, anal and caudal fins. None of those fin-membrane markings appear in any five-spotted Hemichromis, whose flanks instead carry a row of roughly five dark blotches or bars; the combination of a brown back, orange ventral banding and spotted unpaired fins is, on the contrast, consistent with a Serranochromis. Sexual dimorphism in the fish has not been documented in any detail, in part because so few specimens have ever been examined and the species' identity has been unsettled for so long; if it is indeed a Serranochromis, modest male-larger dimorphism would be expected, but this is inference rather than recorded fact.
Habitat
The anchor point for the species is the Lucala River above the Calandula Falls, in the Kwanza (Cuanza) basin of north-central Angola — a clear, rocky, escarpment river dropping over one of Africa's larger waterfalls. Under the now-prevailing Serranochromis reading, the species is restricted to the Kwanza basin (with possible links to the Lower Guinea coastal rivers suggested by the barcoding data), and the high falls and the roughly 1,500-metre escarpment that separate the lower Kwanza from its upper tributaries act as a major biogeographic barrier isolating that fauna. Under the older Hemichromis reading still carried by FishBase, the name was applied more broadly, to material from the Kwanza plus the upper Zambezi and the Okavango system in south-central Africa — but it was precisely the conflation of those distant drainages that the 2025 study set out to untangle, concluding that the Kwanza fish and the Okavango/Zambezi fish are not the same thing.
In-situ water chemistry has not been published for this species specifically. The waters it occupies — Angolan escarpment and floodplain rivers of the Kwanza system — are typically warm, tropical, and run from soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral; close relatives in the region inhabit everything from mainstream river margins to floodplain channels and lagoons. Depth has likewise not been measured for angolensis, but it is a fish of shallow riverine and floodplain habitats rather than deep open water, so the relevant band is the shoreline-to-a-few-metres zone its relatives occupy.
Feeding
No gut-content study exists for Hemichromis angolensis under any name, so its diet must be read from its anatomy and its relatives. Both interpretations of the species point the same way: toward predation. The five-spotted Hemichromis — the genus in which the name long sat — are aggressive, highly predaceous fish that take shrimps, small fishes and aquatic insects and have been deliberately stocked to control overbreeding tilapia. Serranochromis, the genus to which the species is now assigned, are even more emphatically predators: large-mouthed, robust haplochromines that hunt fish and large invertebrates across the floodplain. Either way, angolensis is best understood as a carnivore high on the food web — FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.3 — rather than a grazer or sand-sifter. In its native Kwanza rivers it would function as a mid-level piscine and invertebrate predator of the riverine and floodplain community.
Mating
The reproductive social behaviour of this particular fish has never been observed and documented, a direct consequence of how few specimens exist and how long its identity has been in dispute. What can be said is framed by its two candidate genera, and here the two diverge sharply — which is part of why the taxonomic question matters. If the name belongs to a five-spotted Hemichromis, the expected pattern is strong, well-defined monogamous pair bonding with both partners holding and defending a large territory, in the manner of Hemichromis fasciatus and Hemichromis elongatus, which control some of the largest territories of any jewel-cichlid relatives. If, as the current evidence indicates, the fish is a Serranochromis, the social system is quite different: serranochromines are maternal mouthbrooders, in which the female alone incubates and the pair bond is loose or absent. Until live Kwanza fish are observed at the type locality, the courtship and territoriality of angolensis remain genuinely unknown.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the wild or in captivity for Hemichromis angolensis, and the spawning mode itself is contested along genus lines. Under the Hemichromis concept the fish would be a biparental substrate (nesting) spawner: the female deposits adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface such as a stone or submerged wood, and both parents guard the eggs, larvae and free-swimming fry — in introduced Hemichromis fasciatus, parental defence of the brood has been recorded lasting four to eight weeks. Under the now-favoured Serranochromis concept the mode is entirely different: maternal mouthbrooding, in which the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates the developing young there, with no biparental nest. Clutch size has not been recorded for this species under either reading; as a genus-typical reference, substrate-spawning Hemichromis relatives produce broods on the order of several hundred eggs, while Serranochromis mouthbrooders carry smaller clutches of larger eggs. Because the spawning biology has never actually been observed in angolensis, any figure attached to it is inference from its relatives, not a measured value.
In the aquarium
Hemichromis angolensis is, for practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It is a rarely collected Angolan species whose identity has been in scientific limbo for over a century, and there is no established trade in it, no body of hobbyist breeding reports, and no reliable way for a keeper to obtain a verified specimen. The 'jewel cichlids' sold under various Hemichromis and Rubricatochromis names in shops are different species (most often the red jewel, now Rubricatochromis letourneuxi or Hemichromis bimaculatus), not this fish — so anything labelled 'Hemichromis angolensis' in the hobby should be treated with skepticism and identified to whatever it actually is.
If genuine Kwanza material ever did reach aquarists, the husbandry would follow from its true identity, and on current evidence that means a large predatory cichlid rather than a small colourful jewel. A Serranochromis-type fish reaching 6.5–8 in needs a long, spacious tank measured in metres, soft-to-neutral warm water (roughly 73–82 °F), a sand or fine-gravel bottom with rock and wood structure, strong filtration, and tankmates too large to be eaten — it is a fish-eater, and small companions would simply be prey. It would be a specialist's project, not a community fish. For the overwhelming majority of keepers the honest takeaway is that this is a name to understand, not a fish to buy.
Conservation
Hemichromis angolensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List under either its Hemichromis or its Serranochromis combination, so it carries no formal conservation category (Not Evaluated) and no CITES listing. Its status is, in practice, unknowable until its taxonomy is settled and field surveys locate living populations: a species whose type was lost, whose identity was disputed for 150 years, and which is known from only a handful of specimens cannot be assessed with confidence. If the current Serranochromis reading holds, the fish is a narrow-range Angolan endemic confined to the Kwanza basin and isolated above the Calandula Falls — exactly the sort of restricted, poorly-surveyed distribution that warrants caution. Angolan freshwaters remain among the least-studied in Africa, and the broader pressures on the region's rivers — habitat alteration, dam development on the Kwanza, and the simple scarcity of baseline biodiversity data — mean that the most pressing conservation need for this species is the most basic one: to confirm what it is and find out whether it is still there.
