Taxonomy & naming
Hemichromis frempongi was described by the American ichthyologist Paul V. Loiselle in 1979, as part of his four-part revision of the genus Hemichromis published in the Annales du Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale (Zoologie, Série 8, vol. 228). Loiselle placed it in the Hemichromis fasciatus species group — the large, five-blotched, piscivorous 'banded' jewel cichlids — alongside Hemichromis fasciatus and Hemichromis elongatus, distinguishing it on the basis of a population isolated in Lake Bosumtwi, a crater lake in central Ghana. The type locality is Lake Bosumtwi itself. The species epithet is a patronym honouring Emmanuel Frempong, a Ghanaian fisheries scientist whose work on the lake's fishes contributed to its study; the genus name combines the Greek hemi- (partial, half) with Chromis, an old name reapplied to many African cichlids, the compound signalling Peters's view that the genus partly resembled Chromis. The validity of frempongi has long been questioned. Because the diagnostic characters Loiselle used overlap broadly with riverine Hemichromis fasciatus, several authorities — beginning with the CLOFFA checklist (Daget & Teugels 1991) and the West African faunas of Lévêque, Paugy and Teugels — treated it as a probable synonym or, at most, a lake form. A molecular and morphological revision of the genus by Bitja-Nyom and colleagues in 2021 formally synonymised Hemichromis frempongi with Hemichromis fasciatus Peters, 1857; under that treatment the Bosumtwi population is simply a localised stock of the widespread banded jewel cichlid. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes follow the synonymy, redirecting the name to Hemichromis fasciatus. The name nonetheless persists in the aquarium hobby and in Ghanaian fisheries literature for the distinctive Bosumtwi fish, and we treat it here as the lake's endemic jewel cichlid while flagging that its species rank is not settled.
Morphology
Hemichromis frempongi is a heavy-bodied, fusiform jewel cichlid — the bulkiest of the banded group — reaching roughly 8 in in total length, with Bosumtwi fish in modern seine surveys typically maturing well below that. It carries the diagnostic livery of the fasciatus group: a row of five dark blotches or short cross-bars along each flank, the first running into the dark spot on the gill cover and the last sitting on the base of the tail, frequently with narrower intercalary bars between them. The fin counts match the group, with roughly 13–15 dorsal spines, 11–14 soft dorsal rays, three anal spines and 8–11 soft anal rays. Outside of breeding the ground colour is a muted brassy olive to grey; the eye-catching transformation comes with spawning, when both sexes flush a deep brick-red to crimson over the lower head, breast and flanks, the body markings sharpening to jet black against the red — the 'jewel' colour for which the genus is named. The species is not strongly dimorphic; males tend to grow somewhat larger and heavier-headed, while ripe females become deep-bellied, and in breeding condition the female often shows the more intense red. Reliable external sexing outside of spawning is difficult, which is part of why pairing the fish in captivity is a fraught exercise.
Habitat
Lake Bosumtwi is a closed, near-circular meteorite-impact crater lake about 5 mi across and up to roughly 256 ft deep, lying some 19 mi south-east of Kumasi in Ghana's Ashanti Region. It is the only natural lake of any size in Ghana and the only endorheic (closed-basin) lake in the country: it is fed by around 37 small inflowing streams, of which only a handful are permanent, and has no surface outlet, so its level and chemistry are governed entirely by the balance of rainfall and evaporation. The lake is meromictic — its deep water is permanently stratified and does not mix to the bottom — and below a thermocline at roughly 33–49 ft the water is permanently anoxic and laden with dissolved gases. As a result the entire fish fauna, this jewel cichlid included, is confined to the warm, oxygenated upper littoral zone around the lake's margins. Surface water is distinctly alkaline, with reported pH commonly around 8.5–9 and even higher above the thermocline, elevated conductivity from accumulated dissolved salts, and warm tropical temperatures in roughly the 79–86 °F range. Hemichromis frempongi shares this shallow shoreline habitat with the lake's other cichlids — Tilapia busumana, Coptodon discolor, Sarotherodon galilaeus, Chromidotilapia guntheri and riverine-derived Hemichromis fasciatus — over sandy, rocky and vegetated bottoms. As an isolated crater-lake endemic with a range measured in tens of square kilometres, it is among the most narrowly distributed of all African jewel cichlids.
Feeding
Like the rest of the Hemichromis fasciatus group, frempongi is a predator near the top of its community's food web — an ambush hunter rather than a grazer or sifter. The banded jewels feed on small fishes, shrimps and aquatic insects, lying in wait among cover and rocketing out to seize prey, and they hold and defend large foraging territories to secure a reliable supply of it. In Lake Bosumtwi, where the cichlid fauna is partitioned between planktivorous mouthbrooders (Sarotherodon, Chromidotilapia) and substrate-spawning bottom feeders, frempongi occupies the piscivore/macro-invertebrate-predator niche, preying on smaller cichlids and invertebrates of the littoral zone. Its appetite and the size of territory it must hold to feed itself are the ecological roots of its notorious aggression: a large jewel cichlid needs a large hunting ground, and it does not tolerate competitors within it. In the aquarium this translates directly into a fish that takes meaty foods eagerly — live and frozen fish, shrimp, worms and large pellets — and that will treat smaller tankmates as prey.
Mating
Hemichromis frempongi is a monogamous, pair-bonding substrate spawner, and pair formation is the most dangerous phase of its life cycle in captivity. The banded jewels establish a well-defined pair bond, but courtship in this species is volatile and the margin between bonding and lethal aggression is thin. Hobbyist accounts of breeding frempongi describe groups of juveniles that whittle themselves down through relentless intraspecific fighting until only a single fish, or at best a matched pair, remains — one experienced keeper raised two dozen fry and ended with one male and one female that, almost uniquely, did not kill each other. Even an established pair can turn: if the female stops breeding or the bond falters, the larger male may drive her off or kill her. The behaviour mirrors the wild ecology — a fish built to monopolise and defend a large feeding territory carries that intolerance into courtship — and it is the central challenge in working with the species. When a stable pair does form, the two fish jointly defend a territory and prepare a spawning site on a firm surface, intensifying into the deep red breeding dress as they do.
Breeding
Frempongi is a biparental, open substrate (nesting) spawner, breeding in the same fashion as the rest of the Hemichromis fasciatus group. The female deposits a clutch of adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface — a flat stone, a root or a similar firm substrate in the shallow littoral — and both parents then guard the eggs, fan them and shepherd the wrigglers and free-swimming fry, typically defending the brood for several weeks. Clutch sizes for the large banded jewels run into the few hundreds of eggs (congeners such as Hemichromis fasciatus and Hemichromis elongatus produce broods on this order), well below the fecundity of an open-water spawner but invested with intensive parental care. In Lake Bosumtwi the dependence of every cichlid on a firm spawning substrate and on the shallow, oxygenated margin ties reproduction firmly to the lake's narrow littoral shelf. In captivity, once a genuine pair has survived its own courtship, spawning itself is not difficult: the fish colour up dramatically, clean a surface, spawn, and become formidable parents — the pair will attack anything, including the keeper's hand, that approaches the fry. The transformation from a year of skittish hiding to ferocious open guarding can be abrupt, occurring within a day of the fry becoming free-swimming.
In the aquarium
Hemichromis frempongi reaches the hobby only sporadically and is squarely a fish for the experienced cichlid keeper — its difficulty is not husbandry but aggression. It accepts ordinary hard-water aquarium conditions readily, which suits its alkaline crater-lake origins: neutral to alkaline water (pH roughly 7.0–8.5), moderate to hard, and warm, around 77–82 °F. Filtration should be robust and water changes generous; the fish itself is hardy. The real problem is space and temperament. A single adult or a bonded pair needs a large, long tank — on the order of 55 US gal for a pair and considerably more if any tankmates are involved — heavily structured with rockwork, roots and broken sightlines so that a subordinate fish or a harried mate has somewhere to escape. Keepers who buy a group of juveniles intending to grow out a pair should expect attrition: these fish routinely kill each other down to a single survivor, and forming a pair is a matter of patience, a big grow-out tank, and some luck. Tankmates are a gamble. Anything small enough to swallow will be eaten, and anything large enough to compete will be attacked, especially once the pair spawns; robust, fast, similarly sized cichlids in a very large tank are the only realistic companions, and many keepers run frempongi as a single-species setup. The species is best understood as a behavioural display animal — bought for its spectacular breeding colour and its uncompromising parental ferocity rather than for a peaceful community. It should never be released or allowed to mix into other waters, given the conservation sensitivity of its native lake.
Conservation
Hemichromis frempongi has not been assessed in its own right by the IUCN Red List; following the 2021 synonymy, the name is subsumed under Hemichromis fasciatus, which is listed as Least Concern (assessed 2019) on the strength of that species' very wide West African range. That global rating, however, says little about the Bosumtwi population, which — whether ranked as a full species or a lake-endemic form — is confined to a single closed crater lake and is therefore intrinsically vulnerable. Lake Bosumtwi was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2016, and its cichlids support a traditional, culturally regulated subsistence fishery for the lakeside communities. The most serious documented threat is biological invasion: an unlicensed Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cage farm operated on the lake from 2012 to 2015, and by 2020 escaped Oreochromis niloticus were being caught throughout the lake, making up several percent of the cichlid catch. Nile tilapia is a fast-growing, fecund, environmentally tolerant competitor that has displaced native cichlids in other African lakes, and its establishment in a small endorheic system holding low-fecundity endemics is a genuine concern for the native fauna. Heavy local fishing pressure and habitat change at the narrow shallow margin — the only part of the lake the fish can use — compound the risk. For a fish that may exist nowhere else on Earth, those localised pressures matter far more than the comfortable global status of its riverine namesake.
