Taxonomy & naming
The name is a trade label. The form has no description, authority or year, and the atlas has found no scientific or hobby reference that documents it. The only record is a specialist store listing for captive-bred (F1) fish. Where the parent stock came from, and which described Steatocranus it most resembles, are not known here.
Steatocranus are small cichlids of the Congo basin, often called buffalo heads for the fatty hump on the forehead of adult males.
Morphology
Nothing is documented for this form. Genus context: Steatocranus have a streamlined body and a reduced swim bladder, which suits life on the bottom in fast water.
Habitat
The origin of this form is not documented in the atlas's sources, so no country or ecoregion is claimed. Genus-wide, Steatocranus live in the rapids and rocky stretches of Congo-basin rivers.
Feeding
Not documented for this form.
Mating
Not documented for this form.
Breeding
Not documented for this form. Steatocranus in general are cave spawners with biparental care, but this has not been checked for this form.
In the aquarium
Offered as captive-bred F1 by at least one specialist store. No husbandry data specific to the form were found. Other Steatocranus are usually kept as pairs in a tank with rocks and caves, with moderate to strong flow.
Conservation
An undescribed form has no IUCN assessment. With origin unrecorded, nothing can be said about its wild status.
