Taxonomy & naming
Argopleura conventa was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1913 under the name Bryconamericus conventus, with the type locality given as the Dique de Cartagena in the Departamento Atlántico of Colombia — a canal linking the Magdalena River system to Cartagena Bay. The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Argopleura, which defines its own monotypic or near-monotypic subfamily Argopleurinae within the family Stevardiidae. The parenthetical authority notation — (Eigenmann, 1913) — signals that transfer out of the original genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) is the arbiter of the valid name.
Stevardiidae, the family now recognised for Argopleura, comprises small characins distributed across South and Central America, many historically grouped under the broadly defined Characidae. The reassignment of various stevardiid genera from Characidae followed molecular and morphological work over the early 2000s and 2010s; Argopleura's position in Argopleurinae reflects characters of the caudal skeleton and other features that distinguish it from the broader stevardiid radiation. The genus name Argopleura derives from the Greek argos (bright) and pleura (side), a reference to the reflective lateral flank. The species epithet conventus comes from Latin, meaning assembled or gathered, though its exact application to this fish is not documented in the original description sources available.

Morphology
Argopleura conventa is a small, slender-bodied characin with a recorded maximum standard length of 1.4 in in males and unsexed specimens, placing it among the smallest representatives of its family. Like other stevardiids it has the characteristic compressed, fusiform body plan, a small adipose fin, and the terminal mouth typical of mid-water foragers.

Habitat

Feeding

Should live specimens ever become available, the general requirements of small Magdalena-drainage characins would serve as a starting point: warm, slightly soft to moderately hard tropical freshwater consistent with lowland Colombian conditions, a planted aquarium with good filtration and subdued lighting, and a diet of small invertebrates and prepared foods. Its small adult size (under 1.6 in) would make it suitable for a nano or species aquarium, and its presumed schooling behaviour suggests groups rather than solitary keeping. These are inferences only; no tested husbandry guidelines exist.
Conservation

The Magdalena–Cauca basin, where the species occurs, faces severe and ongoing anthropogenic pressure: dam construction, water extraction, sedimentation, pollution from agriculture and mining, and extensive floodplain modification have degraded large portions of the drainage over the past century. Whether A. conventa survives in the Dique canal or adjacent waters today is unknown; the canal itself is heavily altered from its natural state. A reassessment with targeted field surveys would be required to determine whether the species is genuinely rare, locally extinct, or simply overlooked in a poorly sampled part of the drainage. Colombia is a global hotspot for freshwater fish endemism, and small, cryptic characins of the Magdalena lowlands are frequently under-surveyed.
