Bryconops durbini was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1908, with a type locality in the rio Tapajós, a major clearwater right-bank tributary of the Amazon in Brazil. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name; the parenthetical authority notation indicates the species was originally placed in a different genus before its current assignment to Bryconops.
The genus Bryconops belongs to the family Iguanodectidae, a Neotropical family of small to medium-sized characiforms with a distribution centred on the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Iguanodectidae was formerly treated as a subfamily of Characidae but has been consistently recognised at family level in recent phylogenetic work. Bryconops itself encompasses a diverse group of species that occupy a range of Amazonian and Guianan habitats, and species boundaries within the genus have historically been difficult to resolve; a 2021 redescription of the related B. gracilis (Silva-Oliveira et al., Neotropical Ichthyology) highlighted how frequently species in this genus have been misidentified in collections and in the literature.

Morphology

Detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. Its placement in Bryconops is supported by the genus's suite of osteological and meristic characters, but a thorough modern redescription comparable to those produced for other Bryconops species does not appear to be available in widely accessed sources. Colouration in life is not well documented; the genus generally shows silver to pale gold flanks with a distinct lateral stripe in many species, a pattern likely shared by B. durbini given its phylogenetic position, though this should not be taken as confirmed for the species specifically.

Habitat notes from the broader genus and from literature on allied Bryconops species describe occupation of lentic and lotic environments with acidic, transparent waters — the clear and blackwater streams and river margins characteristic of much of the Amazon lowlands. Any aquarist obtaining specimens — which would require specialist scientific collection permits in Brazil and Venezuela — should treat the fish as a clearwater Amazonian species requiring soft, acidic, well-oxygenated water, subdued lighting, and a peaceful community of similarly sized fish or a species-only setup.
Given the 1.2 in SL maximum size, even a modest aquarium of 16–21 US gal would provide adequate volume for a small group. The benthopelagic classification suggests mid-to-lower level occupancy, and fine sandy substrate with leaf litter in the style of Amazonian biotope aquaria would likely suit the species. The near-total absence of hobbyist data means that any attempt to maintain this species represents genuine original observation with potential scientific value.
Conservation
Bryconops durbini has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known from the central and lower Amazon basin in Brazil and from the río Ventuari drainage in Venezuela — a range that spans large, comparatively intact freshwater systems.
