Taxonomy & naming
Bryconops transitorius was originally described by Franz Steindachner in 1915 as Bryconops melanurus transitoria, treating it as a subspecies of the more widespread B. melanurus. Subsequent revisionary work elevated it to full species status. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name; the parenthetical authority reflects the original combination under a different genus arrangement.
The genus Bryconops belongs to the family Iguanodectidae, a moderate-sized Neotropical family of characiforms that also includes the genera Iguanodectes and Piabucus. Iguanodectids are distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco, and Guiana Shield drainages and are characterized by their streamlined build, preference for flowing-water habitats, and largely insectivorous diet. The checklist of freshwater fishes of South and Central America (Reis et al.) records B. transitorius's distribution as extending across the upper Amazon basin more broadly, though FishBase places the core range within the Tapajós River basin.

It is a small Amazonian characiform of approximately 2.8 in, and the general husbandry requirements inferred from its ecology would follow those of other small, insectivorous Neotropical tetras from clear-water river systems: soft to moderately hard, warm water (roughly 75–82 °F), gentle to moderate current, and a diet rich in small invertebrates and prepared foods.
As with many understudied Amazonian characiforms, the species is likely peaceful and would integrate into a community of similarly sized fishes if it were to become available. However, given the almost complete absence of hobby records, any prospective keeper should treat husbandry as exploratory and document their observations — data on this species from aquarium keeping would constitute a genuine contribution to its natural history.
