Taxonomy & naming
Hemigrammus kuroobi Reia & Benine, 2019 is the valid name in the Catalog of Fishes. It belongs to Hemigrammus, a large genus of small South American tetras now placed in the family Acestrorhamphidae. The authority is written without parentheses because the species was described in Hemigrammus and has not moved.
Morphology
Morphological detail is not recorded in the sources available to the atlas. Consult the original description (Reia & Benine, 2019) for the diagnostic characters that separate it from its congeners.
Habitat
The type locality is a tributary of the Rio Miuá, Rio Negro basin, near São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Amazonas State, Brazil (about 0°06'S, 66°53'W). The upper Rio Negro is classic blackwater: acidic, tannin-stained and very soft. Habitat details beyond the type locality are not recorded in available sources.
Feeding
Diet in the wild is not recorded. Congeners in the genus take small invertebrates and plant debris and accept fine prepared foods in aquaria.
Mating
Not recorded in available sources.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for this species. Most Hemigrammus are egg-scattering, adhesive-egg spawners with no parental care, but that describes the genus, not this fish.
In the aquarium
Sold by Wet Spot under its scientific name. No husbandry data have been published. It comes from soft, acidic blackwater, so keep a group in gentle conditions with similar water.
Conservation
Not evaluated by the IUCN Red List as far as the atlas knows. It is known from a restricted part of the upper Rio Negro. Collection for the trade is the main conservation question for any narrow-range species, and none is documented for this one.
