Hyphessobrycon albolineatum is a small characid tetra endemic to the Autana River, a blackwater tributary of the upper Orinoco basin in Venezuela, where it inhabits tea-stained, low-pH water over sand and bedrock on the Guyana Shield. Described in 1950 by Agustín Fernández-Yépez from the type locality on the Autana, it has been almost never collected since, and the IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2020 — a status reflecting both the remoteness of its range and the genuine difficulty of species identification within the large genus Hyphessobrycon.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon albolineatum was described by the Venezuelan ichthyologist Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1950, in a paper on fishes of the Río Autana published in the Novedades Científicas, Contribuciones Ocasionales del Museo de Historia Natural La Salle, Serie Zoológica. The type locality is the Autana River in the upper Orinoco basin of Venezuela. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS Ichthyology) lists the valid name as Hyphessobrycon albolineatum Fernández-Yépez, 1950.

The genus Hyphessobrycon Durbin, 1908 is one of the largest and most taxonomically challenging genera in the family Characidae, encompassing several hundred species whose limits are actively debated. Assigning specimens to species within the genus requires careful meristic and morphological comparison, and the IUCN assessment specifically notes that species identification within Hyphessobrycon is difficult — a factor contributing to the scarcity of confirmed records of H. albolineatum after the original description.

This fish was long listed as Hyphessobrycon albolineatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Hyphessobrycon, and the current combination Hyphessobrycon albolineatum is followed here.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon albolineatum is a small tetra reaching a maximum of 1 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase. Like other members of the genus, it has the typical characid body plan: laterally compressed, with a well-defined lateral line, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and caudal fins, and a rounded snout.

The specific epithet albolineatus — from Latin albus (white) and lineatus (lined) — refers to a pale or white stripe along the body, which is presumably the species' most readily noted external character. Beyond size and this general descriptor, morphological details from the original description have not been widely summarised in secondary sources; the species is rare enough in collections that comparative data remain sparse.

Habitat

This species is known only from the Autana River, a right-bank tributary of the upper Orinoco in Amazonas state, Venezuela. The Autana drains the Guyana Shield, and its waters are blackwater — tea-stained, acidic, low in dissolved nutrients, and moderately to highly transparent, with a sand, gravel, and bedrock substrate. The IUCN assessment describes the habitat as a blackwater river system characteristic of the Guyana Shield.

Water conditions at such localities are typically soft, with very low conductivity, pH values below 6, and warm temperatures. The Autana region is remote and sparsely settled, and the site lies within or adjacent to the Autana-Cuao protected area, which offers some degree of habitat protection. The single confirmed post-description threat identified by the IUCN is illegal gold mining activity at the type locality, which can alter water chemistry and substrate through mercury contamination and sedimentation.

Feeding

No specific feeding data for Hyphessobrycon albolineatum appear in the available literature. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.0 for the species, consistent with omnivory at the lower end of the carnivore range. The IUCN assessment notes that its diet is probably omnivorous, as is typical across the genus.

Congeners in the aquarium hobby forage opportunistically on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton — as well as algae and fine plant matter. Given the blackwater environment, which tends to support sparse macroinvertebrate communities, small water-column invertebrates and allochthonous material falling from the riparian canopy are likely important dietary components in the wild.

Mating

No spawning observations specific to Hyphessobrycon albolineatum are on record. The genus is characterised by egg-scattering, non-guarding reproduction typical of small characids: males and females scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation or other substrates with no subsequent parental care, and the eggs and larvae receive no protection from either parent.

Displaying males in congeners typically court females with fin-spreading and lateral orientation, and spawning occurs in bursts as the pair move through vegetation. The IUCN assigns a generation length of two years for this species, which is consistent with the fast turnover seen in small Hyphessobrycon and implies a high intrinsic rate of population increase under favourable conditions.

Breeding

Hyphessobrycon albolineatum has not been recorded in the aquarium trade or bred in captivity as far as published sources indicate. Extrapolating from closely related congeners — and from the reproductive mode recorded by the IUCN (oviparous, egg-scattering, no parental care) — breeding would follow the standard Hyphessobrycon pattern: conditioned adults scatter small, slightly adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops; eggs are subject to predation by the parents and should be removed; hatching occurs within one to two days at tropical temperatures; and the tiny fry require infusoria-sized first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp.

The IUCN notes that population resiliency is assessed as high, with an estimated population doubling time of less than 15 months — a figure derived from the reproductive rate assumed for a small, fast-maturing characid. Whether the species could be established in captivity from wild-caught material would depend on obtaining specimens and providing the soft, acidic blackwater conditions of its native Autana habitat.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon albolineatum is not in the aquarium hobby and is essentially unknown outside its type locality. It has been almost never collected after its original description in 1950, and no commercial or hobbyist trade records for this species are known. Any aquarium keeping of this species would be exceptional and would call for the soft, acidic, blackwater conditions of its native Autana habitat: very low hardness, pH below 6, warm temperatures, dark water with low dissolved nutrients, and minimal water movement.

Congeners kept in the hobby are maintained at 72–82 °F and pH 5.8–7.8 in soft to moderately hard water with fine-leaved vegetation and subdued lighting. As a small tetra reaching only 1 in SL, H. albolineatum would require fine-grained tankmates and small foods. Its conservation status and rarity mean that any interaction with this species by aquarists would more plausibly arise through targeted scientific collection than through the ornamental trade.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hyphessobrycon albolineatum as Data Deficient (DD) in November 2020 (published in IUCN Red List version 2021-2). The assessment notes that the species is endemic to the Autana River on the Guyana Shield in Venezuela and has been almost never collected since its original description. The primary identified threat is illegal gold mining at the type locality, which can degrade the blackwater habitat through mercury contamination and sedimentation.

The Data Deficient listing does not imply that the species is not at risk — it reflects genuine uncertainty about the species' population size, trends, and distribution extent, compounded by the difficulty of identifying Hyphessobrycon species in the field. The generation length is estimated at two years, and the species' population trend is recorded as unknown. Further survey work in the Autana basin, paired with careful taxonomic examination of collected material, would be required to move the species toward a more informative threat category.
