Hyphessobrycon uaiso is a small, recently described characid tetra endemic to the rio Uberaba in the upper rio Paraná basin of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Confined to the headwaters of a single river system near the BR-262 highway, it represents the narrow-range, data-sparse end of the enormous genus Hyphessobrycon — a fish known to science for little more than a decade and not yet assessed for conservation.

Taxonomy & naming

Hyphessobrycon uaiso was described by Carvalho and Langeani in 2013, with the type locality given as the rio Uberaba, a tributary of the rio Grande within the upper rio Paraná drainage, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The original description appeared in Neotropical Ichthyology. The valid name, as recognised in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer), is Hyphessobrycon uaiso Carvalho & Langeani, 2013.

The species belongs to the immense and polyphyletic genus Hyphessobrycon, which contains well over 150 described species and is one of the largest genera of small tetras in South America. Phylogenetic placement within the genus is not yet firmly established for H. uaiso; like many recently described members, it awaits inclusion in a broader molecular analysis. The slug 'astyanax-uaiso' reflects an early provisional filing that predates confirmation of the genus assignment in the primary literature.

Morphology

Hyphessobrycon uaiso is a small characid tetra with the laterally compressed, fusiform body plan typical of the genus. Specific size data are sparse for this recently described species; as a small member of Hyphessobrycon from a mid-elevation river drainage, an adult standard length in the range of 0.8–1.6 in would be consistent with related taxa, though this figure is not confirmed from the original description as captured in available sources.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data distinguishing H. uaiso from its congeners are contained in the original description by Carvalho and Langeani (2013). Habitat

The type locality is the rio Uberaba, part of the rio Grande sub-drainage of the upper rio Paraná basin in western Minas Gerais, Brazil. Collections were made near the BR-262 road in the headwater reaches of the system. The rio Uberaba is a cerrado-fringe river, and its upper reaches flow through seasonally dry savanna landscape where streams can be small, clear, and subject to considerable seasonal variation in flow.

Water parameters for the rio Uberaba headwaters are not recorded in the available secondary sources, but cerrado streams in the upper Paraná system are typically slightly acidic to neutral, warm, and low to moderate in dissolved minerals. The species appears to be endemic to this single river system, which makes any habitat alteration in the catchment directly relevant to its survival.

Feeding

As a small Hyphessobrycon tetra, it is expected to be a generalised invertivore-omnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates, microcrustaceans, and organic detritus opportunistically, as is typical of the genus in the wild.

Mating

No mating behaviour observations for Hyphessobrycon uaiso have been published. Hyphessobrycon as a genus are egg-scattering, open-water or plant-spawning tetras with no parental care; the same basic strategy is assumed for H. uaiso pending any species-specific study.

In closely related small tetras, males typically school and display to females, and spawning occurs in the water column or among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, where adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are released and left unguarded. Whether H. uaiso displays any specialised mating behaviour is unknown.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Hyphessobrycon uaiso has not been documented in the available literature. Given the species' apparent absence from the ornamental fish trade, no hobbyist-generated breeding records exist.

By analogy with the broader genus, spawning would be expected to involve scattered adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over substrate, with no parental care and a risk of egg predation by the adults. Fry would require very small first foods typical of small characid larvae. The conditions needed to trigger spawning in this species — temperature, photoperiod, water chemistry cues — have not been reported.

In the aquarium

Hyphessobrycon uaiso does not appear to be established in the ornamental aquarium hobby. It is a recently described species from a small, restricted range, and no commercial collections or trade records have been reported in the available literature. Aquarists are unlikely to encounter this species in retail outlets.

Were it to become available, its husbandry requirements would be expected to broadly resemble those of other small Hyphessobrycon tetras from the upper Paraná system: soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius, kept in a group of six or more in a planted aquarium with peaceful tankmates of similar size. All of this is inference from genus-level expectations; no direct husbandry data exist.

Conservation

Hyphessobrycon uaiso has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its status is Not Evaluated (NE). However, the species presents several characteristics that suggest potential conservation concern: it is known from a single river system (the rio Uberaba), its type locality lies near a major federal highway (BR-262), and it inhabits a region of the Brazilian cerrado that has experienced extensive agricultural and urban development.

A review of fishes of the upper rio Paraná basin lists H. uaiso among species requiring conservation assessment, reflecting the broader pattern of narrow-endemic small tetras in this heavily altered drainage being at risk before formal evaluations can be completed. The rio Uberaba watershed is subject to sedimentation, water extraction for agriculture, and riparian clearance — pressures common across the cerrado-Paraná interface. Until a formal IUCN assessment is conducted, the true threat level remains unquantified.
