Andromakhe is a small genus of characins (family Characidae) endemic to the subtropical La Plata basin, with the atlas's 4 species recorded from Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It is one of the less-studied genera even within a well-worked drainage system, and detailed habitat and life-history data for most of its species remain sparse in the literature. Body size in the atlas spans a fairly wide range, from roughly 1–3 in, suggesting the genus is not as size-uniform as many small tetra genera.
None of the four species - A. latens, A. paris, A. stenohalina, and A. tupi - has an established presence in the aquarium hobby, and none carries a common name in general use; this reads as a genus of mostly scientific rather than aquarium interest. Conservation assessment is likewise incomplete, with three species not yet evaluated and one assessed Near Threatened, a pattern consistent with a genus that has drawn taxonomic attention but not yet a systematic conservation review. Given how sparse the published data are, it is fair to say less is confidently known about Andromakhe than about most genera in the atlas.
