Andromakhe latens is a small characid described from the state of Ceará in northeastern Brazil and named in the original 2004 publication in Neotropical Ichthyology. Subsequent phylogenetic work has shifted its placement within Characidae, with some analyses treating it under Astyanax or the segregate genus Andromakhe — a reminder that the boundaries between these large, species-rich genera remain actively debated. No common name is established in the trade and no IUCN assessment exists for the species, reflecting both its limited collecting record and the taxonomic flux that has followed it since description.

Taxonomy & naming

Andromakhe latens was described by Mirande, Aguilera & Azpelicueta in 2004 in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology (volume 2, pages 45–54), with the type locality in Ceará, northeastern Brazil. The species epithet latens means 'hidden' or 'concealed' in Latin, likely alluding either to the species' obscure morphological distinctiveness or to the circumstances of its collection.

Phylogenetic analyses published after the original description have placed the species outside the core Hyphessobrycon clade. Mirande's 2010 comprehensive phylogeny of Characidae, which drew on an extensive morphological dataset, treated it within a broader assemblage, and Plazi TreatmentBank records the species under Astyanax latens as the current valid combination used by some authors. A more recent phylogenomic study of the family published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society (2024) references the original description but did not include the species in its UCE-based analysis. The name Andromakhe has also appeared in some treatments. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes remains the primary authority for the valid name, and researchers working with this taxon should verify the current accepted combination before citing material.

Autapomorphies noted in taxonomic treatments include an abrupt decrease in dentary tooth size posteriorly and an elevated gill raker count, characters that help distinguish it from superficially similar small characids.

This fish was long listed as Hyphessobrycon latens; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Andromakhe, and the current combination Andromakhe latens is followed here.

Morphology

As a member of the large, loosely defined Hyphessobrycon–Astyanax complex, A. latens is a small, laterally compressed characid with the typical body plan of the group: moderately deep body, forked caudal fin, a single dorsal fin, and the family's characteristic adipose fin. Precise size data from the original description are not widely reproduced in secondary sources, and the species has not entered the ornamental trade in any quantity, so hobbyist accounts are absent.

The diagnostic characters cited in formal treatments focus on internal and meristic features rather than striking external colour. The abrupt size reduction in the posterior dentary teeth and the high gill raker count are the most frequently cited autapomorphies. Colouration is presumed to follow the typical small-characid pattern of a silvery body with a lateral stripe or humeral spot, but detailed colour notes from fresh material are sparse in accessible literature.

Habitat

The type locality is within Ceará, in the semi-arid northeastern interior of Brazil — a region dominated by intermittent rivers and reservoirs of the Caatinga biome rather than the perennial lowland drainages more typical of Amazonian tetras. Freshwaters of the Caatinga can experience pronounced seasonal variation in temperature, dissolved oxygen, and chemistry as water levels drop through the dry season.

Beyond the type-locality record, distribution data for A. latens are sparse. The iNaturalist page for the taxon (listed under Astyanax latens) shows zero observations, indicating the species has not been detected by citizen-science survey efforts. Whether this reflects genuine rarity, difficulty of identification in the field, taxonomic uncertainty depressing records, or simply limited collecting effort in the region is unclear.

Feeding

No published dietary study exists for A. latens specifically. Small characids from Caatinga drainages are generally opportunistic omnivores, taking aquatic invertebrates, small terrestrial insects falling onto the water surface, plant material, and detritus depending on seasonal availability.

In the absence of species-specific data, aquarists keeping related small Hyphessobrycon or Astyanax would typically offer a varied diet of quality flake or small pellets supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates such as Daphnia and brine shrimp. Given the seasonally harsh nature of Caatinga habitats, the species may be adapted to variable food availability.

Mating

No direct observations of reproductive behaviour in A. latens have been published. As a member of Characidae, the species almost certainly reproduces by egg-scattering without parental care, the mode universal across the family. Spawning in small characids typically involves a pair or small group releasing adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or over substrate, with adults providing no further investment.

Seasonal breeding cues in Caatinga fishes are often tied to the onset of the rainy season, when rising water levels, increased food availability, and cooler, more oxygenated water trigger spawning. Whether A. latens follows this pattern has not been documented.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for A. latens are documented in accessible literature or hobbyist accounts, consistent with the species' absence from the ornamental trade. Based on the biology of closely related small characids, breeding would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering model: adhesive eggs deposited among fine-leaved plants or over soft substrate, hatching within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, and fry requiring very small initial foods such as infusoria or commercial liquid fry food before accepting newly hatched brine shrimp.

Data on clutch size, incubation duration, fry growth rate, and age at sexual maturity are not available for this species.

In the aquarium

Andromakhe latens has not entered the ornamental trade and is not kept in home aquaria to any documented extent. No care guides, husbandry notes, or hobbyist accounts exist for the species. Its absence from FishBase's public species database further reflects how little it has circulated outside specialist ichthyological collections.

Aquarists interested in small characids from northeastern Brazil more broadly would find that the Caatinga fauna includes a range of modestly sized, hardy species adapted to variable conditions, but A. latens specifically remains a fish of the scientific record rather than the hobby.

Conservation

Andromakhe latens has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List under any of its names — neither the original Andromakhe latens nor the subsequent combinations Astyanax latens or Andromakhe latens. Its conservation status is therefore formally unknown.

The Caatinga biome faces significant and ongoing pressures including reservoir construction, water extraction for agriculture and human use, periodic drought intensified by climate change, and water pollution from agricultural runoff. Small, potentially endemic fish species in this biome are at risk from all of these factors, particularly where their ranges are restricted to a single drainage or sub-basin. The lack of any IUCN evaluation means that even whether the species meets criteria for a threatened listing has not been formally examined. More field survey work in Ceará freshwaters would be needed to establish population size, range, and trend for this taxon.
