Andromakhe paris was described by María de las Mercedes Azpelicueta, Adriana Edith Almirón, and Jorge Rafael Casciotta in 2002. The type locality is the Río Juramento, Salta Province, Argentina, the only known drainage from which the species has been recorded. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Andromakhe paris Azpelicueta, Almirón & Casciotta, 2002; it has not been placed in synonymy and is treated as a valid, distinct species.
Hyphessobrycon is one of the largest genera in the family Characidae, encompassing well over a hundred species of small to medium characins distributed across tropical and subtropical South America. The genus is defined primarily by the absence of a supraorbital bone and the presence of a humeral spot, though its boundaries have been repeatedly debated; molecular work continues to test whether the assemblage is monophyletic. A. paris belongs to the diverse Argentinian-subtropical contingent of the genus, which also includes several species from the La Plata basin.
