Taxonomy & naming
Barbonymus mahakkamensis was described by the German ichthyologist Ernst Ahl in 1922, originally in the genus Barbus, with the type locality given as the Mahakam River in eastern Kalimantan Province, eastern Borneo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records five syntypes held at the Zoological Museum Berlin (ZMB 20533). The species epithet directly references its type locality, the Mahakam River.
The species has passed through several generic assignments. Doi (1997) placed it in Barbodes, the arrangement used here and reflected in the slug and scientific name as presented. However, more recent work by Kottelat (2013) and Dahruddin et al. (2021) treats the valid combination as Barbonymus mahakkamensis, moving it into the genus Barbonymus — a genus erected for larger-bodied Southeast Asian barbs. This taxonomic uncertainty means the species may be encountered under either Barbodes or Barbonymus mahakkamensis in the literature, and referencing the Catalog of Fishes is essential for the current accepted placement.
The genus name Barbodes derives from the Latin barbus (barbel) and the Greek suffix -oides (resembling), essentially meaning "barbel-like." The family Cyprinidae, subfamily Smiliogastrinae, encompasses the species under the broadest systematic framework used by FishBase.
This fish was long listed as Barbodes mahakkamensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Barbonymus, and the current combination Barbonymus mahakkamensis is followed here.
Morphology
Detailed morphological data for Barbonymus mahakkamensis in the published record are sparse beyond what was recorded in the original description. It is a small barb with a benthopelagic habit, consistent with the body plan of other small Bornean river barbs: a laterally compressed form suited to moving through both open water and near-bottom environments in flowing lowland rivers.

The river at this zone is a complex system with high turbidity (recorded at 101–229 NTU) and relatively low dissolved oxygen (2–3 mg/L), reflecting both the organic load of a large tropical lowland river and tidal influence. Barbonymus mahakkamensis is an endemic of this river system, meaning the specific physical and chemical character of the Mahakam and its associated floodplain waters defines the species' entire known range. It shares this river with a diverse endemic freshwater fish fauna that has attracted scientific attention as an example of Bornean biogeographic distinctiveness.
Feeding
Based on its trophic level of approximately 2.7, Barbonymus mahakkamensis feeds low in the food chain, taking small invertebrates such as zooplankton, insect larvae, and similar microinvertebrate prey. Breeding
Barbonymus mahakkamensis is an egg-scatterer that, like all barbs, provides no parental care after spawning. Eggs are adhesive or semi-adhesive and are broadcast over fine-leaved plants, roots, or soft substrate, where they are abandoned. Adults do not guard eggs or fry, and in typical barb fashion may readily consume any eggs they encounter after spawning.
No captive breeding records for this species appear in the hobbyist literature, which is consistent with its apparent rarity in the aquarium trade. The general biology of small Bornean barbs suggests a pattern of relatively high fecundity and short generation times, traits that underpin the high resilience classification FishBase assigns to the species.
In the aquarium
Barbonymus mahakkamensis does not appear in the mainstream aquarium trade and has no dedicated profile in major hobbyist databases. The species is endemic to a single river system in eastern Kalimantan and has not been established as a trade or hobby fish in the way that many of its more colourful Bornean and Sumatran congeners have been.
Should the species become available to keepers, the water chemistry of its native Mahakam River suggests that it would require warm, slightly acidic to neutral, soft to moderately soft conditions: temperatures around 81–82 °F, pH in the range of 6.4–6.8, and low mineral hardness. As a small benthopelagic barb, it would likely be best maintained as a shoal in a well-filtered river-biotope style aquarium with open swimming space and some cover. A varied diet of small invertebrates, fine-particle foods, and quality prepared foods would suit its microfeeder profile.
Conservation
Barbonymus mahakkamensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; FishBase records its conservation status as Not Evaluated (NE). No published conservation assessment has been located for this species.
The species is an endemic of the Mahakam River system, which means its entire global range is confined to a single drainage in eastern Kalimantan. Borneo has experienced some of the most severe rates of tropical deforestation and freshwater habitat degradation in the world, driven by logging, palm oil expansion, mining, and dam construction. Endemic river fishes with restricted ranges are inherently vulnerable to basin-level perturbations — sedimentation, pollution, altered hydrology, and the direct loss of riparian forest that regulates water quality and temperature.
