Epalzeorhynchos frenatum is the rainbow shark — a slate-grey to charcoal labeonine cyprinid with every fin flushed orange-red, a high triangular dorsal fin, and no relation whatsoever to true sharks. It is one of the most heavily traded bottom-dwelling fishes in the aquarium hobby, nearly all of it farm-bred in Thailand, including a long-established albino line. In the wild it inhabits the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Klong basins of mainland Southeast Asia, grazing algae and biofilm from rock and wood in rivers and seasonally flooded plains. Unlike its Critically Endangered congener the redtail shark (E. bicolor), the rainbow shark remains assessed as Least Concern, though its river systems are increasingly altered by dams and abstraction. In the aquarium it is hardy and handsome but famously territorial: an adult claims a cave or territory and polices it against its own kind, so it is almost always kept one to a tank.

Taxonomy & naming

The rainbow shark was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1934 as Labeo frenatus, from material collected at Chiang Mai in northern Thailand (holotype ANSP 57513, with a series of paratypes, all at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia). It was later transferred to Epalzeorhynchos, a small genus of Southeast Asian labeonine cyprinids that also contains the redtail shark (E. bicolor), and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Epalzeorhynchos frenatum (Fowler 1934) as the valid combination — the spelling frenatus still circulates widely in hobby literature from the decades when the species was placed in the masculine genus Labeo.

The family placement is Cyprinidae, subfamily Labeoninae — the sucker-mouthed, algae-grazing river fishes of Asia and Africa. The species epithet frenatum comes from the Latin frenum, a bridle: it refers to the dark stripe running through the snout and eye like a bridle strap, a mark much more visible on the grey-bodied rainbow shark than on its jet-black congener. The 'shark' of the common name is pure fishkeeper's shorthand for the tall, raked dorsal fin and torpedo profile; the fish is a cyprinid, closer to barbs and carp than to any elasmobranch.

Morphology

The rainbow shark is an elongate, torpedo-shaped cyprinid reaching about 6 in total length, with a flattened ventral profile, an inferior mouth bearing two pairs of barbels, and the tall, pointed dorsal fin that gives the 'shark' silhouette. The body is slate grey to charcoal — darkening with age and mood — while all the fins, not just the caudal, are orange to brick red; that all-fins-red pattern is the quickest way to separate it from the redtail shark, in which only the caudal fin carries colour against a velvet-black body. A dark bridle stripe runs from the snout tip through the eye, and there is usually a black blotch at the upper base of the pectoral fin.

The mouth is a ventral grazing apparatus typical of the Labeoninae: fringed lips form a scraping edge used to rasp algae and biofilm from hard surfaces. Two colour forms dominate the trade — the wild-type grey-and-red, and an albino line with a pinkish-white body and the same red fins, farmed in large numbers since at least the 1980s. Sexes are similar; females grow slightly larger and noticeably deeper-bodied, while males in good condition are slimmer with more intensely saturated fins and, in some populations, fine black edging on the anal fin.

Habitat

Epalzeorhynchos frenatum is native to mainland Southeast Asia, in the Mekong basin (Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, including tributaries such as the Xe Bangfai), the Chao Phraya basin, and the Mae Klong basin of western Thailand. It is a fish of river channels with sand and rock substrates, where it grazes exposed hard surfaces; during the flood season it moves onto inundated floodplains and into flooded forest, retreating to the main channels as waters recede — the seasonal lateral migration typical of many Mekong cyprinids.

Water in its native rivers is warm (roughly 75–81 °F), moderately soft to moderately hard, and near neutral in reaction, though conditions swing considerably between the dry season's clear, concentrated channels and the turbid sheet-flood of the monsoon. Juveniles are more often encountered over shallow, structured habitat; adults hold station near cover on the bottom. The species is nowhere pelagic — its whole architecture, from the flat belly to the underslung mouth, is that of a benthic grazer working current-swept surfaces.

Feeding

The rainbow shark is an omnivorous grazer. The bulk of its natural intake is aufwuchs — the mat of algae, diatoms, biofilm and micro-invertebrates coating submerged rock and wood — rasped off with the fringed, keratinised edges of its ventral mouth. Small crustaceans, insect larvae and organic detritus taken while grazing round out the diet; it is a substrate-oriented feeder rather than a hunter.

In the aquarium it accepts nearly everything: sinking pellets and wafers, flake as it drifts down, blanched vegetables such as courgette and spinach, and live or frozen bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp. A vegetable-heavy staple with periodic meaty supplements keeps the fins strongly coloured. Juveniles are earnest algae-grazers and are often bought for that job; adults become progressively less interested in algae and more interested in whatever else is on offer, so the species should not be relied on as a clean-up crew. Food competition is one of the main triggers for its territorial aggression, and feeding sinking foods at more than one station takes pressure off tankmates that share the bottom.

Mating

Almost nothing is recorded of reproductive behaviour in the wild. Like other river-dwelling labeonines of the region, the species is understood to be an egg-scattering seasonal spawner with no parental care, its reproduction cued to the monsoonal flood pulse that opens feeding and nursery habitat on the floodplain. There is no lasting pair bond; ripe fish shed eggs and milt over the substrate and abandon them.

What aquarists observe instead is the species' pronounced territoriality, which intensifies at sexual maturity. An adult stakes a territory around a cave, root tangle or rock pile and defends it with flared fins, lateral displays, chasing and — between two rainbow sharks in a confined tank — persistent, escalating attack. This behaviour is not courtship; it is space-holding, and it is the reason the species is kept singly in almost all home aquaria. Reports of home-aquarium spawnings are vanishingly rare and poorly documented, and no reliable account of a natural pairing sequence in captivity has entered the mainstream literature.

Breeding

Commercial production supplies effectively all trade stock. Farms in Thailand breed the species in ponds and hatchery tanks using hormone-induced spawning — the standard cyprinid aquaculture technique in which ripe adults receive a pituitary-extract or synthetic-analogue injection, and the stripped or scattered eggs are incubated away from the adults. The long-established albino line, and the fish sold under trade names like 'ruby shark', all originate from this farm production; wild collection plays no meaningful role in the hobby supply.

Home breeding is, for practical purposes, not achieved: the combination of mutual intolerance between adults, the need for a flood-pulse trigger, and the space demands of conditioning more than one adult in a single tank has kept documented hobbyist spawnings to near zero. The eggs, as in related labeonines, are non-adhesive or weakly adhesive scatter spawn with no care from the parents; fry in hatchery settings take fine first foods such as rotifers and Artemia nauplii. Aquarists interested in the genus's reproduction generally have to settle for the farm literature — the home aquarium has added very little to it.

In the aquarium

The rainbow shark is hardy, long-lived (commonly 6–8 years) and strikingly coloured, and it would be an easy recommendation were it not for its temperament. An adult claims the bottom of a modest tank as a territory and enforces it — first against other rainbow and redtail sharks, which it will not tolerate at all in ordinary home volumes, and then, with age, against loaches, catfishes and other bottom-dwellers. The standing advice is one Epalzeorhynchos of any species per tank, in a volume of at least 55 US gal for an adult, with the layout broken into sight-blocked zones by wood, rock and dense planting so that passing fish are not permanently in view of the territory holder.

Water chemistry is undemanding: roughly 75–81 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, hardness to about 12 °dH, with good filtration and current appreciated by a fish built for flowing water. A tight lid matters — the species is a documented jumper, especially when startled or harassed. Midwater shoalers that stay off the bottom (larger rasboras, danios, barbs of appropriate size) make the safest tankmates; slow, long-finned or bottom-bound fish fare worst. Juveniles sold at 1.5–2 in are peaceful and often housed in community tanks, which is how most aggression problems begin — the buyer should plan for the adult, not the fish in the shop tank.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Epalzeorhynchos frenatum as Least Concern (Vidthayanon, 2012; assessed 28 March 2011), on the strength of its wide distribution across the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Mae Klong systems and the absence of evidence for a range-wide decline. The assessment nonetheless records a decreasing population trend, and the pressures on lowland Southeast Asian rivers — mainstem and tributary dams, sand mining, floodplain conversion and dry-season abstraction — bear directly on a species whose life cycle tracks the flood pulse.

The contrast with its congener is instructive: the redtail shark (E. bicolor), a Chao Phraya endemic, went from trade staple to Critically Endangered and possibly extinct in the wild within a few decades, while remaining ubiquitous in shops as a farmed fish. The rainbow shark's much larger range spreads that risk, and its aquarium supply is likewise fully decoupled from wild populations by Thai farm production. No CITES listing applies, and the species is not a CARES priority. The conservation-minded aquarist's contribution here is modest but real: farmed stock only, and no release — the species has already established introduced populations outside its native range via the aquarium trade.
