Garra jiulongi was described in 2026 by Cai-Xin Liu, Yu-Yang Zeng and Xiao-Yong Chen, in a paper co-authored with Thaung Naing Oo and published in Zootaxa; the Catalog of Fishes records the species authority as Liu, Zeng & Chen in Liu, Zeng, Thaung & Chen, 2026, reflecting that the formal naming act is credited to three of the paper's four authors. It belongs to the genus Garra, part of the subfamily Labeoninae within the family Cyprinidae, and was described based on morphological comparison and molecular evidence from the upper reaches of the Salween-Nujiang River drainage in Baoshan City, Yunnan Province, southwestern China — the sixth Garra species recorded from the Salween-Nujiang basin as a whole, and notably the first whose type locality sits within the Chinese section of that river system.
The describing authors found G. jiulongi most closely allied to G. gravelyi on the basis of similar meristic (scale and fin-ray) counts, distinguishing the two by an enlarged pulvinus — a fleshy pad on the oral disc — whose width is 53.5-64.2% of disc width, and by a broader head, 68.2-77.8% of head length in width. From all other Salween and Chinese congeners it is further separated by a combination of characters: a unilobed proboscis, 12 circumpeduncular scales, 32-34 lateral-line scales, 3.5 transverse scale rows between the dorsal-fin origin and the lateral line, 9-10 predorsal scales, two pairs of barbels, and a scaleless breast. The describing authors specifically discuss intraspecific variability in snout morphology within Garra, noting that structures such as the proboscis and disc lobes can vary significantly and in a coordinated way even within a single species — a caution against relying on snout shape alone to characterize G. jiulongi or distinguish it from relatives. Habitat
Garra jiulongi is known from the Mengboluo River, near Kejie Town, Changning County, Baoshan City, in the upper Salween (Nujiang) River drainage of Yunnan Province, southwestern China. The Catalog of Fishes gives its distribution as the Mengboluo River drainage within the upper Salween River basin of Yunnan. It is the first Garra species whose type locality lies in the Chinese section of the Salween-Nujiang system, a river that flows from the Tibetan Plateau through Yunnan into Myanmar and Thailand as the Thanlwin/Salween. Specific water chemistry, current speed and substrate at the type locality were not accessible for this article, though species carrying a developed proboscis and oral disc, as this one does, are generally associated with clear, fast-flowing mountain streams over rock — a genus-level inference, not a documented habitat description for this species specifically.
Feeding

The genus Garra more broadly does include species kept in the aquarium trade as algae-eaters — Garra rufa (the "doctor fish" used in fish-spa exfoliation treatments) and Garra flavatra (the "panda garra") among the better-known examples — but this is a genus-level observation, not evidence that G. jiulongi itself is collected or traded. Like most Garra it would be expected to need strong current and high oxygenation if ever kept, based on its documented affinity for a mountain-stream habitat.

Garra jiulongi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, having been described only in 2026. Its known distribution is limited to the Mengboluo River drainage in the upper Salween basin of Yunnan Province, China, and no population, trend or threat data specific to the species were accessible for this article.
