Taxonomy & naming
Neolissochilus wynaadensis was described by the Scottish surgeon and naturalist Francis Day in 1873, with the type locality given as Vythiri in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. Day originally placed the species in the old aggregate genus Barbus under the subgenus Barbodes — the parenthetical authority in the valid name records that subsequent work moved the species out of Day's original genus combination.
The species appears in recent literature under the name Neolissochilus wynaadensis, reflecting uncertainty over genus-level placement within the large and taxonomically complex Cyprinidae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) retains the Barbodes combination used here, and any reference to Neolissochilus wynaadensis in the conservation literature refers to the same fish. The old combination Barbus (Barbodes) wynaadensis also appears in historical accounts.
This fish was long listed as Barbodes wynaadensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Neolissochilus, and the current combination Neolissochilus wynaadensis is followed here.
Morphology
The Wayanad mahseer is a large-bodied barb, recorded to at least 9.8 in in total length and reported up to approximately 7.87 in standard length in field surveys. Like other members of its group it is a robust, streamlined cyprinid adapted to life in fast-flowing hill streams, with a moderately compressed body, a large head, and a terminal to slightly subterminal mouth suited to picking food from rocky substrates and the water column.
Detailed morphological data in the primary literature are limited, but the species shares the general appearance of the large Deccan barbs — a silvery, often brassy-flanked body without the bold patterning of smaller ornamental barbs. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented in detail; as with most large barbs, ripe females are likely more robust around the abdomen.
Habitat
Neolissochilus wynaadensis is restricted to the upland rivers and streams of Wayanad, draining through the Western Ghats escarpment into the Cauvery River basin. Documented localities include the headwaters of the Cauvery, the Thirunelli puzha (Kabani River), the Vythiri River, the Kakkan Halla, the Moyar River, and the Kallar, a tributary of the Bhavani River. All known sites lie within the moist, forested hill ranges of the Kerala–Karnataka border zone.
The species inhabits fast-flowing streams and rivers with rocky or gravel substrates at moderate elevation, the kind of clear, cool-to-warm upland water typical of the Western Ghats before the forest gives way to the plains. FishBase records a water temperature of around 75 °F and a pH of approximately 7, with moderate hardness (~10 dGH), consistent with the well-buffered, relatively clear streams descending from laterite and crystalline-rock catchments.
Feeding
Specific dietary studies on Neolissochilus wynaadensis are lacking in the available literature. Large barbs of the Western Ghats are generally omnivorous opportunists, taking algae, plant matter, small invertebrates, and organic detritus from the substrate and the water column. The rocky, fast-flowing stream habitat suggests a diet that includes periphyton, aquatic insect larvae, and other benthic invertebrates scraped or picked from hard surfaces.
In the absence of published gut-content data for this species, broad dietary inference from ecologically comparable large cyprinids in the same river system is the best available guide. Data on food preference and seasonal diet shifts remain a gap in the species' natural history.
Mating
Neolissochilus wynaadensis, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built, and no parental care is provided at any stage. As with large river barbs and mahseers more broadly, spawning is likely seasonal, timed to monsoon-driven river spates that flush the rocky streams and bring fish into condition.
Mating involves males pursuing gravid females through the water column or over the rocky substrate, the pair releasing eggs and milt simultaneously. Eggs are broadcast and settle among gravel and stones, where they develop without any further attendance from the adults. Details of courtship behaviour specific to this species have not been described in the literature.
Breeding
In the wild, breeding in Neolissochilus wynaadensis is presumed to be a seasonal event tied to the onset of the monsoon rains, a pattern common to large barbs across the Western Ghats and the Deccan rivers. The species is a broadcast spawner, scattering adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel and rocky substrate with no parental investment beyond fertilisation.
There are no published accounts of successful captive breeding. Given its Critically Endangered status and extreme rarity, the species is absent from the ornamental trade and has not been the subject of aquaculture trials. Conservation breeding programmes have not been formally documented for this species, representing a significant gap for a fish this close to extinction.
In the aquarium
Neolissochilus wynaadensis is not kept in the aquarium hobby. It is a large, Critically Endangered fish with a tiny wild range, and it is neither collected nor traded commercially. Its size — reaching at least 9.8 in — and its requirement for fast-flowing, well-oxygenated upland stream conditions would make it a demanding species to house even if specimens were available.
Any hobbyist interest in this species should focus on awareness of its conservation status rather than acquisition. It is included here as part of a comprehensive barb atlas record, not as a species recommended for private keeping.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Neolissochilus wynaadensis as Critically Endangered (CR), under criterion A2ace, with the assessment dated 30 June 2010. The species qualifies for this category on the basis of a severe inferred population decline driven by ongoing threats across its range: habitat destruction through forest clearance and agricultural conversion in the Wayanad hills, pollution from pesticide and fertiliser runoff, and potential local harvest. Its range is extremely limited — all known localities lie within a small cluster of rivers and tributaries in the Wayanad–Kodagu highlands.
The Western Ghats is one of the world's eight hottest biodiversity hotspots, and its freshwater fish fauna is under persistent pressure from an expanding agricultural footprint, including coffee, tea, and cardamom cultivation in the hills. Endemic stream fishes like N. wynaadensis face particular risk because a single watershed-level disturbance — a dam, a chemical spill, or a prolonged drought — can affect the entire known population. Targeted surveys, legal protection of riparian forests, and monitoring of water quality in Wayanad's stream network are the most critical near-term conservation needs for this species.
