Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes bovanicus was described by the British ichthyologist Francis Day in 1877 from specimens collected in the Bhavani River (anglicised as the "Bowany" River), a major left-bank tributary of the Cauvery in the Nilgiri Hills of what is now Tamil Nadu and Kerala, India. Day placed the species in Barbus, the broad Victorian genus that long received most of the Old World carps, and the binomial was subsequently listed under Barbodes and Puntius as taxonomic concepts for the group shifted over the course of the twentieth century. The current valid placement, as recorded in GBIF and consistent with the modern treatment of Asian mahseers, is Barbodes bovanicus Day, 1877; old combinations in the literature include Barbus bovanicus and Puntius bovanicus.
Neolissochilus is one of the two principal mahseer genera of South and Southeast Asia, distinguished from the closely related Tor by details of the squamation and lip structure. The genus holds a suite of large riverine barbs from India, the Himalayan foothills, Sri Lanka, and mainland Southeast Asia through Sundaland; several species are of conservation concern. B. bovanicus is the sole representative of the genus confined to the Western Ghats of peninsular India outside the Himalayan arc.

Morphology
As a member of the mahseer alliance, Barbodes bovanicus is a large, robust, fusiform barb built for life in fast-flowing rivers. FishBase records a maximum total length of 14.2 in, consistent with the large body size characteristic of Neolissochilus. The body is strongly built, with large cycloid scales, a moderately falcate dorsal fin, and a forked caudal fin typical of active rheophilic cyprinids.
Detailed meristic and coloration data for B. bovanicus are sparse in the accessible literature; like many recently recognised or restricted-range mahseers, fine morphological descriptions exist primarily in Day's original account and in grey literature associated with Indian fisheries surveys. The species is benthopelagic in habit, foraging along the bed and margins of fast rivers and reservoirs.
Habitat
Barbodes bovanicus is native to the Cauvery river system of southern India, where it inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill rivers and streams of the Western Ghats. The Bhavani River — from which Day described the species — drains the Nilgiri Hills before joining the Cauvery, and the fish evolved in the steep, rocky, clear-water environment typical of Western Ghats rivers above the ghats escarpment: cool to warm temperatures, near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, high dissolved oxygen, and gravel or boulder substrates.
Today the species' effective habitat has been reduced to a single impoundment: Mettur Reservoir on the Cauvery, where the last known population persists. The transformation of the original riverine habitat by dam construction — Mettur Dam was commissioned in 1934, one of the largest in India — fundamentally altered the hydraulic regime and connectivity that large migratory barbs depend on. The species' presence in the reservoir suggests some ecological flexibility, but reservoir conditions are a far cry from the species' evolutionary template.
Feeding
Barbodes bovanicus is presumed to be a broadly omnivorous, benthopelagic feeder in the mahseer tradition, likely taking algae, plant material, aquatic invertebrates, and organic detritus from the substrate of fast rivers and reservoir margins. Large Asian mahseers are generally opportunistic and shift diet seasonally, consuming more invertebrates and small fish when available and more plant and algal material at other times.
No detailed dietary study of B. bovanicus appears to exist in the accessible literature; extrapolations draw on the ecology of related Neolissochilus and Tor species in comparable Western Ghats and Deccan river systems.
Mating
Like all barbs, Barbodes bovanicus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Large riverine barbs and mahseers in South Asia typically undergo seasonal upstream migrations timed to the monsoon, moving into shallow, fast, gravelly reaches to spawn in aggregations. Males pursue gravid females, and eggs and milt are broadcast over clean gravel or rocky substrates in the current; there is no pair bond, no territory beyond the immediate spawning act, and no parental care of any kind.
For Barbodes bovanicus specifically, spawning biology has not been formally documented in the published literature. The collapse of the species' river range and the impoundment of its surviving population in Mettur Reservoir are likely to have severely disrupted or eliminated any historical migration and spawning runs.
Breeding
Barbodes bovanicus is an egg-scatterer that broadcasts adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel substrates in fast-moving water, with no parental care; the adults take no interest in eggs or larvae after spawning. This is the universal barb reproductive mode, and large riverine species in the mahseer group follow it on a seasonal cycle tied to rising water levels and temperature changes associated with the monsoon.
The species is not kept in the aquarium hobby and no captive-breeding programme is known to be active for it. Given its Critically Endangered status and restricted wild population, establishment of an ex-situ breeding effort through Indian fisheries authorities or conservation institutions would represent a significant contribution to the species' survival prospects.
In the aquarium
Barbodes bovanicus is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense. It is a large, Critically Endangered endemic with a single known surviving wild population, and it does not appear in the ornamental trade. Any specimens encountered outside of a formal conservation breeding context would represent a serious concern for the species.
From a purely husbandry standpoint, large mahseers require spacious tanks or ponds with strong filtration, high dissolved oxygen, and cool to moderate temperatures reflecting their hill-river origins; they are generally unsuitable for home aquaria. The Bowany barb belongs in its river — or at minimum, in a carefully managed conservation-breeding facility working toward eventual reintroduction.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Barbodes bovanicus as Critically Endangered (CR) in 2010, reflecting a catastrophic decline across its historical range in the Cauvery drainage. The species is now believed to survive only in Mettur Reservoir; all or nearly all of the riverine habitat in the Bhavani and upper Cauvery system has been altered beyond viability by a combination of dam construction (fragmentation of river connectivity and loss of spawning migrations), intensive water abstraction for agriculture, siltation, pollution, and the introduction of non-native fish species that compete with and prey upon native endemics.
The Western Ghats is a global biodiversity hotspot and one of the world's most threatened freshwater fish regions; dozens of endemic cyprinids, including several other Neolissochilus and related genera, face similar trajectories. For B. bovanicus, the contraction of its viable habitat to a single reservoir makes the population extremely vulnerable to any further disturbance — a single pollution event, disease outbreak, or water management change could eliminate the last known individuals. No protected-area designation specifically covers the Mettur Reservoir population, and no formal ex-situ conservation programme for the species has been widely reported.
